NCAAT: tracking the ACC and also the Duke Coaching Family

So far, the ACC is 2-1, with Duke and Pitt as winners, and UVA suffering the upset loss. Pitt (11), Miami (5), and NC State (11) play today.
The Duke Coaching Family is 3-0, with Bobby Hurley's ASU squad dropping 98 pts to win their play-in game, and Chris Collins' 7-seed Northwestern squad winning their first round game, 75-67. Pitt, coached by Jeff Capel, won too, as mentioned above. Arizona St.'s fightin' Hurleys and the fightin' Jeffs of Pitt play today.

You forgot about Blakeney. Howard lost yesterday to Kansas.

And does Scheyer count as the family?

I was gonna say "Did you know there's a coach named "Jon Scheyer" who played under K and has taken his first ever team past the first round?

I don't understand why this isn't more discussed!"

But I thought better of it.

There is a coaching tree thread

Coaching tree is 4-1

Jon
Capel win over Miss State
Hurley over Nevada
Collins over Boise

Hurley and Capel play today

Loss
Blakeney

I did forget about Howard U! thanks for updating the list! Yes, Scheyer counts but since he is currently at Duke I hesitated to include him since everybody here is already following Duke.

Yes, and I have followed and contributed to that thread. I figured it would be nice to follow these two concepts together specifically for the 2023 NCAAT.

Collins and NU

Northwestern has the highest all-time NCAA tournament winning percentage in the Big Ten and probably the country, all under Collins. The Wildcats have won an astounding 75% of their tourney games, if I've got the details right.

3-1.

Anyone know of any assistants that are also from Duke tree?

Tyler Thornton is an assistant for Blakeney at Howard.

Guys who didn't make the tournament include:
Nolan Smith is an assistant at Louisville (oof). Greg Paulus is the head coach at Niagara.

This is not a complete list.

Tommy’s Harvard team and Johnny’s UCF team did not make it, although UCF won their first NIT game this week.

Unfortunately, the ACC has spit its games so far toaday: Pitt won, giving the ACC an 11 over 6 upset, but NCSU could not equal that task and fell to #6 Creighton.
The Fightin' Capels held ISU to a miserable day shooting, 23, 9.5, and 58% FGs, 3FGs, and FTs respectively.
#5 Miami's up next vs the Drake Bulldogs, and ASU tries to continue the Coaching Family Tree 11 over 6 upset magic vs. TCU.

Miami mounts a furious rally in the final 5+ minutes to go on a 16-1 run to finish the game, and go from down 8 to win by 7. Gutsy, clutch time performance and lots of FTs. Wong had a terrible game, shootin 1-10 FGs but everybody else stepped up.

ASU-TCU super entertaining if you were a neutral, but rough finish for Bobby’s team. Had control almost the entire game, but couldn’t stop fouling, missed a couple of big FTs, bad turnovers and execution down the stretch. Got a difficult 3 to tie in the closing seconds, but ended up giving up the winning shot on a tough floater.

Love Bobby but his team played really dumb at times. Can't believe they gave up a short pull up in the lane at the end. I know they were trying not to let Miles Jr. beat them but...dude!!!

This thread is as good a place as any to track the performances of all the conferences in the NCAA Tournament.

What’s happened to Atlantic 10?

Amazing how far the Atlantic 10 has fallen. Fifteen teams; chock full of previously strong mid-majors with a history of Sweet 16s and beyond. Only 1 team (VCU) makes tourney and loses.
