Every P4 conference had a first year team in their conference championship, and 2 of the 4 won. Two teams from Texas lost and two from the west won.

I recall hearing (unsure which show, but on ESPN Radio) that teams playing in conference championships wouldn’t have their playoff chances punished by losing but that winning could help their chances of getting in. It’s too late at night for me to sort through the calculus, but that would suggest to me that SMU would still be in and that Clemson has likely played themselves in.

I think SMU stays in, and Clemson and Arizona State are now in, dislodging Alabama and Miami.

How many of you had that on your bingo cards back in September?
 
Looked at ESPN FPI ratings. Heavily, heavily, heavily weighted toward SEC with 5 teams in Top 8 and Oregon not in Top 5.

Of interest, they have VaTech @ 6-6, 21 spots ahead of Duke. VaT had OOC losses to Vandy and Rutgers, OOC wins over 2 dogs and no ACC wins over top 3 teams. Guess overall record and similar schedule don’t play into this🤬.

Edit. Guess win over Marshall not a dog, but still…..

This is just silly and shows the folly of looking at it in such a simplistic manner. If Texas had played SMU’s schedule they would likely be 13-0, while if SMU had played Texas’ schedule I would expect them to be around 8-5.

The only team Texas lost to (Georgia) might well be the best team in the nation, and Texas probably should have beaten them last night. This is why we have a 12-team playoff — and it will likely become a 16-team event soon,

I really hope Texas plays SMU so they can show how much stronger of a team they actually are.,

Agreed, the SEC schedule is just much more difficult — even for a team like Texas that had an easy draw relative to UGA, Tennessee, Ole Miss, or Alabama anmong others.

And of course, Alabama beat UGA but likely gets pushed out to keep SMU in. Smh.
 
Ole Miss, Alabama (and probably Missouri) are better than SMU, Clemson, Boise State, Indiana (and probably a couple of others), but they are probably left out. I am an Alabama fan, but if they wanted in they probably shouldn't have laid an egg against Vandy or Oklahoma. Same with Ole Miss. I can see people being up in arms about the 3rd and 4th best teams in a 4 team playoff. I am not going to be up in arms about the 11th and 12th teams this year. Alabama, Miami and Ole Miss did this to themselves.

Agreed. Each team in that bottom group have a good argument as to why they should be in, but have no one to blame but themselves for being in their position.

Seems like 75/25 SMU in over Alabama according to pundits, but all that matters is the committee. Consensus view has ND vs Indiana in the 7/10 matchup for the "best in Indiana" game but I've also seen ND slotted up to 6 to face SMU with Penn St getting the Indiana matchup. The rest of the bracket seems fairly baked. Oregon getting Ohio St/TN winner as #1 seed is not doing them any favors. That's a really tough game no matter what.

If SMU is in, I like our chances for Gator or perhaps Holiday.
