Movies/TV worth watching (or at least discussing)

Quick recap of the last few weeks:

Arcane season 2; I’m about halfway thru and am having trouble following the plot. Losing interest.

What We Do In The Shadows final season: overall pretty weak but am okay with how it ended.

Silo season 2: first episode was boring and I really question why they would kickoff the season with it. Second episode was just good enough for me to try one more but I’m not optimistic.

Dune Prophecy: Fantastic show so far thru three episodes! I’m disappointed there are only six total out.

We just watched The Six Triple Eights on Netflix. Excellent and highly recommend it. It’s a story we’d never heard of before.

So I know I'm years late in this, but I finally watched Joacquin Phoenix in Joker today. That is a very disturbing film, but one of the best composed I have seen in quite a while. I doubt I'll ever watch it again, but I'm glad I saw it once.

I bought it on DVD, watched it once, and that will likely be the one time. It was very well done, and I was looking forward to the 2nd. Before it even got reviewed, I knew I'd likely not be seeing Phoenix as Arthur again.

His performance is mesmerizing.

I strongly urge all of you to not bother with the sequel. It is a waste of time and it is clear that Phoenix and Todd Phillips only made it because of the size of the check.

We watched Wes Anderson's four short films based on Roald Dahl stories last night (Netflix). Very fun, quirky as you would imagine. Incredible casts.

The Henry Sugar story was my favorite of the four, although the Ratcatcher was really interesting as well.

My top ten films of 2024 --

in keeping with my addiction to brevity and precision, I will explain each of my choices in exactly 10 words each… so, this is 100 words on 10 films.

I’m on a roll with limited series’. Last week we finished up Get Millie Black on Max and I just finished binging “Say Nothing” on Hulu. As much as I enjoyed Millie Black, Say Nothing is next level.
It’s based on a novel about the troubles in Northern Ireland. I’m sure liberties were taken, but the characters and many of the events are historically accurate. It’s dark subject matter but very engaging. I can’t recommend it enough.

Have you seen Belfast? If not I highly recommend.

I watched two ESPN shows last night. First, I watched the one on the NY Sack Exchange. If you were an NFL fan during that era, particularly if you lived in the NY area, it is a lot of fun. Interesting to see the different paths they took.

Then I saw they had a new one about Boomer Esiason and his son's cystic fibrosis. I listen to Boomer on the radio for a few minutes most mornings and I generally am a fan, and I was well aware of the incredible work he has done for cystic fibrosis, which his son has. I was not aware of the details of the story or some of the more recent developments. It is a truly incredible story - you can't make it up - very heartwarming. Definitely worth your time, even if you have no interest in Boomer and/or football.
I love this. I worked in a CF clinic for 2 years and I am dear friends with some legendary folks in the CF treatment community. Was always one of my favorite patient populations to care for. I got incredibly close to so many of those kids.

I don’t think so but I’ll check it out. I like most Irish shows for some reason. I even liked Frank of Ireland and was hoping for another season.
Belfast is a semi-biographical story by director Kenneth Branagh, growing up during The Troubles in Belfast.

Yup. I watched this on XMas Eve. I always spend XMas Day with my family's best friends including their daughter who is like a younger sister to me who had to terminate a pregnancy because the fetus had an extreme case of CF and was highly unlikely to survive. They terminated 14.5 years ago, roughly the week my first child was born, so it was particularly sensitive for me having the happiest day of my life while she was going through personal hell. Fortunately, they now have two healthy kids without CF (I'm recruiting their 6th grader for Duke baseball - he's a stud).

I had no idea about the new developments in treatment for CF that are shown in the show. It is wonderful and I'm glad many people can now live much longer, happier lives.
