^ interesting stuff, but it's more than a bit apples to oranges at this point as a lot of teams are playing less challenging non conference opponents at this point...

Yup, but even still, who would’ve bet on Jaylen Blakes making the biggest leap of all our outgoing transfers? Sooooo happy for that young man.
Blakes has a huge leap, which is great, and Schutt has some promising improvement, especially for a player who missed an entire season with injuries. The other players seem to have very similar stats to last year. If you'd asked me before the season who might show significant improvement, I would have said Stewart and Power.

I'm not completely surprised because he's pretty mature and strong, played a lot of minutes, knows what he's doing...agree that it's a very good thing.

Missouri beats Kansas at home. Mark Mitchell scores 17 points. Missouri was up as much as 24 and cut it to 2 with two minutes left. Mitchell hit a huge 3 at that point to up the lead to 5 points, as they won by 9. Kansas had been leaving Mitchell open and dared him to shoot a three and he was 0-3 from the arc before finally making the big three to extend the lead.

It makes sense Mitchell would make 3s against a team from a state as flat as his shot

I guess Blakes is not wearing that mask for his games this season. That mask had to hurt his outside shooting. I hope he doesn't get punked in the nose this season.

GoDuke!

Roach not playing tonight. Recap of the previous game vs UConn says he exited with an injury in the 2nd half and did not return.

Mark Mitchell had his first 10-5-5 game of the season in Missouri's 88-61 win over Long Island. He finished with 15 points (7-9 FG, 1-5 FT), and team-highs with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks.

Not a bad line for Sean Stewart: 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in 24 minutes as a starter, with no turnovers and 3 fouls. But he shot 3-11 from the field and 2-4 at the line, and Ohio State lost to Auburn 91-53, a neutral game in Atlanta. Ouch.

Also today, Christian Reeves had 2 points (1-1 FG) and 1 steal in 5 minutes off the bench, but Clemson lost at home to Memphis, 87-82 OT.

Back on Thursday, TJ Power was scoreless in 9 minutes (0-2 FG, 0-1 3PT) -- but did have a rebound and an assist -- in UVA's 59-41 win over Bethune-Cookman. Meanwhile, Jaden Schutt started in Virginia Tech's 95-67 win over North Carolina A&T, scoring 6 points (2-7 FG, all threes) and adding 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block in 25 minutes of play.

I think we can say at this point that Jon Scheyer has made almost every single correct decision in terms of roster construction and minutes distribution in his time as head coach. There are definitely some things we can criticize about his coaching from a tactical standpoint here or there, but I am personally very happy with how he has distributed minutes, and his talent evaluation.

I recall a TON of people were begging for more Sean Stewart last season. He's playing about twice as many minutes this year at Ohio St. and is playing worse than his per minute averages at Duke. The only thing he's noticeably doing more on a per minute basis is fouling and turnovers:

TJ Power is averaging fewer points in twice as many minutes:

Mark Mitchell would have been a rotation player, but he would have definitely come off the bench, and his lack of shooting ability would really hurt a team that desperately needs more spacing. His game has too much overlap with Coop's.

Minutes will always be a highly debated subject on DBR, and there have definitely been plenty of folks the past couple of seasons saying "player X should be playing more minutes," but it's looking like Scheyer has been right all along. He's already made the proper adjustments with this year's team in my opinion, and the performance of the players who transferred out are making him look pretty good. Really, the only slight miscalculation with this year's roster is maybe not keeping Jaylen Blakes. But I love that Blakes is going crazy at Stanford.

I am extremely supportive of Scheyer and very happy with how he has coached and recruited. But, playing devil's advocate, though it seems like he was right to move on from Power and Stewart, could one also argue that he misjudged in recruiting them to begin with? Again - I know that recruiting HS players is a very inexact science, and his hit rate is really good, so I'm not knocking him, but it is worth considering.

I very much agree with your main point. Maybe Stewart and Power will find their mojo in the next 2.5 seasons, but they’ve each been very disappointing.

On Blakes, I’m very happy for him, but I don’t know that it was any sort of mistake on Duke’s part. Blakes graduated and may have simply wanted a new experience or to go to grad school not at Duke. Also, Stanford’s schedule has been extremely weak thus far. We’ll see if Jaylen plays as well against somewhat tougher competition. Finally, I don’t think Jaylen would have been a good fit on this Duke roster, because he still is a poor shooter from distance. (He is shooting 48% on long twos, which is great.)
