MBB: Other Teams' Preseason Charity Exhibitions

USC 96, Gonzaga 93 (recap, box score, highlights)

The Zags, who debuted at No. 6 in the preseason Associate Press Top 25 poll, were led by Arkansas grad transfer Khalif Battle, as the 6-foot-5 guard scored 20 points against his former coach Eric Musselman.

The Trojans led for nearly 30 minutes of the game, outrebounded the Zags 34-32 and blocked five shots. USC, who won the battle in the paint 38-32, also held Gonzaga to just 40.9% from the three, as the Zags were 9-22.
I have to wonder if a result like this will impact Gonzaga's ranking. I know it is an exhibition and that rotations were probably skewed as a result, but they did just lose to a team that KenPom projects at the 14th best team in the Big Ten (that conference really cannot count... though the ACC can't do geography so who are we to complain?).

Also, "held Gonzaga to just 40.9% from three??!?!" I feel like anything above 40% is a pretty darn good day from 3. I mean, there were only 2 teams in all of college basketball (Kentucky 40.9 and Purdue 40.4) who hit better than 40% from 3 on the season last year. Gonzaga hit 36.2% a year ago so -- small sample size aside -- they would seem to have improved in this arena.

Tenn goes down 66-62 to No. 18 Indiana on Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center.

Zakai Zeigler led Tennessee with 13 points.

Cheats with the big win over JC Smith but no one saw it🤭

We have a whole postgame thread to discuss Arizona State-Duke, so here are the other results from Sunday's charity exhibitions.

Ole Miss 91, Illinois 74 (recap, box score, highlights, presser)

[Malik] Dia paced the team with 18 points, going 7-8 from the field including a 3-3 performance from three. The transfer from Belmont also added three steals on the defensive end. [Jaemyn] Brakefield chipped in 15 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, while Dre Davis (13 points), and [Matthew] Murrell (11 points) scored in double figures as well.

The Illini were led in scoring by Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn with 15.

Villanova 87, Robert Morris 73 (recap, box score, full replay, presser)

[Eric] Dixon ultimately led all scorers with 28 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and zero turnovers in 23:50 of action. [Enoch] Boakye posted a double-double with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field to go with 10 rebounds in 27:50 minutes...

Senior guard Jordan Longino helped ignite the Wildcats' offense in the second half, scoring 13 points in the period. The Doylestown, Pa., native finished the day 8-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the 3-point arc for 21 points to go with five rebounds. His +29 rating while on the court was the best of any player in this afternoon's exhibition contest.

Auburn 83, Furman 62 (recap, box score, presser)

All-American big man Johni Broome led the way for the Tigers with an 18-point, 14-rebound double-double performance against the Paladins. He was one of five players in double figures including freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford, who scored 13 in his Auburn debut.

Indiana 66, Tennessee 62 (recap, box score, highlights, presser)

Junior forward Malik Reneau was a catalyst with 10 straight late-game points. He finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.

Guard Myles Rice, a highly touted transfer guard from Washington State, had 20 points. Arizona transfer center Oumar Ballo had six points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore swingman Mackenzie Mgbako had 12 points, all in the second half.

UAB 88, Western Kentucky 79 (recap, box score, presser)

Efrem "Butta" Johnson had a strong outing for UAB with 16 points and five assists while shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 6-for-7 from the line. Tyren Moore scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half while knocking down three 3FGs. Bradley Ezewiro recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards in his first action as a Blazer. Yaxel Lendeborg struggled from the field, but was able to score 12 points and grab 15 rebounds to go with four assists, two blocks and a steal. Greg Gordon made an impact for the Blazers with eight points, four rebounds, and four steals. Christian Coleman added 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

I know what you're thinking: there's a basketball player willing to carry the nickname "Butta"? Actually, there are at least two: earlier today On3 reported that 2025 recruit Nicholas "Butta" Randall committed to Missouri. He's a 6-8 power forward and would, presumably, share the frontcourt with Mark Mitchell next season.

High Point 71, ETSU 56 (recap, stats, news highlights)

Boyd, who accounted for all three of ETSU's made triples, went 4-of-4 from the free throw line, while grabbing four rebounds. Jaden Seymour (11 points) and Missouri transfer Curt Lewis (10 points) were the other Buccaneers to score in double figures. Lewis and Quimari Peterson led the Blue & Gold with six rebounds each...

High Point had three players reach double figures in scoring with Big South Preseason Player of the Year selection Keeza Giffa scoring a game-high 23 points to go along with six assists and six rebounds.

Houston 79, Texas A&M 64 (recap, box score, highlights, full replay, presser)

Graduate guard LJ Cryer led the Cougars with 18 points thanks to 6-of-12 shooting from the arc while graduate forward J'Wan Roberts totaled 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals, four blocks and zero turnovers in more than 26 minutes of action...

Houston outrebounded the Aggies 40-29 with 19 offensive rebounds, including a game-high eight offensive boards from sophomore forward Joseph Tugler. The Cougars also forced 16 Texas A&M turnovers and converted them into 22 points.

Seven Cougars drained at least one 3-pointer in the win as Houston connected on 14-of-31 from long range.

Returning to the Houston lineup, sophomore forward Terrance Arceneaux scored 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers and added three rebounds with two assists and a pair of steals. The Beaumont, Texas, native missed most of the 2023-24 season after tearing his Achilles tendon against Texas A&M inside Toyota Center on Dec. 16, 2023.

Making his collegiate debut, freshman guard Mercy Miller posted 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting while junior point guard Milos Uzan – competing in his inaugural Houston appearance after transferring from Oklahoma earlier this summer – totaled five points with four rebounds and two assists.

Michigan 96, Toledo 92 (recap, box score, highlights, presser)

Roddy Gayle Jr. and L.J. Cason each scored 20 points for the Wolverines. Gayle shot 5-for-10 from the field and went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Cason went 6-for-7 and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. Vladislav Goldin scored 13 points and pulled in six rebounds. Will Tschetter dropped 12 and Sam Walters chipped in 11 points to help U-M.

A couple of additional notes on this game. First, Coach Dusty May used the same starting lineup as in Sunday's exhibition against Oakland, which included both 7-0 Yale transfer Danny Wolf and 7-1 FAU transfer Vladislav Goldin. Second, Roddy Gayle Jr transferred from Ohio State to Michigan, which is all kinds of weird. He made Trilly Donovan's All-Traitor Team:

Penn State 79, Lafayette 64 (recap, stats)

The Nittany Lions shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from 3-point range and 50.0 percent (24-for-48) from the field. Penn State scored 21 points off of 15 Lafayette turnovers and limited the Leopards to a 38.1 percent (24-for-63) field goal percentage and 27.6 percent (8-for-29) clip from 3-point range.

Yanic Konan Niederhauser led four Nittany Lions in double figures with 15 points, five rebounds and four blocks. D’Marco Dunn scored 13 points and was 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Ace Baldwin Jr. tallied 11 points, nine assists, four rebounds and two seals, while Zach Hicks added 11 points and four assists.

D'Marco Dunn is one of two PSU players who transferred from UNC in 2023. Puff Johnson is the other, and he scored 9 points.

Arkansas 85, Kansas 69 (recap, box score, highlights, presser)

Arkansas was led by guards D.J. Wagner and Boogie Fland, who scored 24 and 22 points, respectively. Fland also had six of the team’s 12 steals and five assists. Zvonimir Ivisic added 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Kansas got 26 points from Dajuan Harris Jr., on 11-of-17 shooting from the field including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Rakease Passmore was the only other Jayhawk in double figures with 11 points.

Wow. After a lot of preseason hype last year, Wagner often looked like he would struggle to score 24 locked in the gym by himself. But I guess Cal saw better things in practice and had a sense for the kind of jump DJ might make as a soph.

I was shocked to read the recap on the Ole Miss game and see the picture of Dia(?) scoring on the Heat Miser. How does he still have eligibility left?

American 74, Howard 66 (final score)

Southern Miss 92, Jackson State 85 OT (recap, box score)

[Andre] Curbelo iced the game with two free throws and put his point total at 29 for the night. Coming off a 30-point, 15-rebound game at New Orleans, [Denijay] Harris followed up with 25 points and 13 rebounds tonight. In his first game for the Black and Gold, Watson added 15 points.

The Golden Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the floor and connected on 30 free throws. Jackson State survived much of the game thanks to its 11 three-pointers, while Southern Miss had only four. DeAntoni Gordon finished with 10 points and massive dunk in the first half, while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Both of USM's preseason charity exhibitions went to overtime. Unfair preparation advantage?

Alabama 96, Memphis 88 (recap, box score, highlights, full replay, presser)

Mark Sears led the Crimson Tide with 20 total points, including three from beyond the arc on five attempts. The senior dished out four assists and picked up three steals by day's end. PJ Haggerty scored 32 points to lead the Memphis offense on Monday...

For the game, the Tide shot 48 percent (27-56) from the field and connected on 12 three-pointers. UA dished out 17 assists in total on Monday, with [Labaron] Philon leading the way with seven. After getting in the bonus with 15:11 remaining in the second half, UA ended the day shooting 62 percent from the foul line (30-48). The Crimson Tide's solid three-point defense was pivotal on Monday, with Memphis only shooting seven percent (1-14) from deep.

New Mexico 74, UTEP 70 (stats, presser)

Lobos head coach Richard Pitino: "Well, first and foremost, grateful for UTEP to be able to play that game. I mean, the NCAA doesn't always get everything right as it pertains to rule changes, and I think they got this one right. To be able to play a Division I opponent is phenomenal for us. To get 10,000 [attendees] for a good cause obviously is great as well. Both teams got better, no doubt about it, way better than -- no disrespect to playing a [Division III team], but those were two Division I teams battling it out, rebounding the ball great. They're not afraid to be aggressive and foul, obviously, and turn us over. Turnovers were a lot to do with our carelessness, as well as their unrelenting commitment to being aggressive, and trying to turn us over as best they can. So, awesome first game for us..."

Closed scrimmages are beyond the parameters of this thread, but I didn't expect so many final scores to be reported. Here are the ones that took place over the weekend involving ACC teams, and some more featuring other power conference teams.

Another weekend, another set of closed scrimmages. After going 0-4 last week, the ACC finally won one of these. But just one.

James Madison 93, Virginia Tech 76 (source)
Georgetown 66, Virginia 55 (source)...

A box score circulated online reported Georgetown as 0 for 11 from three point range in the first half, and Virginia was 0 for 13 in the second. Together, the two teams missed 44 of 48 attempts from three point range in the scrimmage.

Nine Georgetown players saw action according to the report, with the Hoyas scoring the last eight points of the game.
(Hoya Saxa)

Pittsburgh 71, Cincinnati 62 (source)...

The Panthers were led by Damian Dunn and Cam Corhen, who scored 14 points apiece. Zack Austin contributed with 12 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.

Pitt had a double-digit lead at halftime, before Cincinnati gained the lead mid-way through the second half. Corhen made several big shots down the stretch, and Austin made an impact with his athleticism. [Jaland] Lowe and [Ishmael] Leggett had strong games as well, per source.
(Pittsburgh Sports Now)

We somehow have some photos and video highlights, courtesy of Pitt MBB. Thanks, Coach Capel!

Connecticut 88, Harvard 66 (source)
Florida 98, Charleston 66 (source)
Marquette 87, Oklahoma 77 (source)
Maryland 75, Seton Hall 53 (source)
Northern Iowa 85, Wisconsin 75 (source)
Texas 79, Colorado 75 (source)
BYU 91, Boise State 85 (source)...

BYU held out 4 scholarship players; sources tell me they were held out for precautionary reasons and are minor reasons. Boise State, meanwhile, played with its top players. The Broncos played 11 players and BYU played 9 guys. [Tyson] Degenhart was as good as advertised for Boise State, pouring in 31 points on the Cougars.

BYU was led by Richie Saunders. Richie led BYU with 25 points, 6 steals(!), and was 9-10 from the foul line. Five total BYU players scored in double figures. Dawson Baker was BYU’s second-leading scorer with 19 points, and Trevin Knell shot 4-8 from distance. Egor Demin led all players with 8 assists.

BYU led for nearly 39 minutes and won the turnover battle 20-8. BYU as a team shot 41% from three and held the Broncos to 30% from distance. BYU’s biggest lead was 11 points and Boise State’s biggest lead was 2 points, which came 30 seconds into the game.

10/30 Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Notre Dame (Big Brothers Big Sisters/Boys & Girls Club) -- 7pm ET, ESPN+, live stats

A reminder that the Irish play their charity exhibition game in a matter of minutes, if you subscribe to ESPN+. (If you don't, but are in the mood for basketball, Syracuse and Miami each have regular exhibition games against Division II teams starting soon as well, and both are streaming on ACCNX. You can watch Slippery Rock-Syracuse here and Saint Leo-Miami here.)

Georgia 114, UCF 76 (recap, stats, radio highlights, presser)

Five scorers saw double figure scoring as sophomore guard Blue Cain led the charge with 20 points powered by five three-pointers...

[F]reshman forward Asa Newell shined in his first appearance at the Steg, tallying 19 points paired with a team-leading seven boards. Graduate guard Tyrin Lawrence followed with 17 points while sophomore guard Silas Demary Jr. and junior forward RJ Godfrey recorded 16 and 14, respectively. Newcomers junior forward Justin Abson and freshman center Somto Cyril were towers in the paint, recording a combined five blocks with three and two, respectively...

The Bulldogs were a force on the glass, outrebounding the Knights 46-33 on the night. Georgia shot 61.8 percent from the floor with a 55.6 percent clip from behind the arc, stretching its largest lead to 43 late in the second half.

10/30 Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Notre Dame (Big Brothers Big Sisters/Boys & Girls Club) -- 7pm ET, ESPN+, live stats

Notre Dame 91, Purdue Fort Wayne 54 (recap, box score, highlights)

Notre Dame scored 51 second-half points on a blistering 70.4 percent from the field. There was one point in the second half in which ND was 8-for-11 from beyond the arc, ultimately finishing 9-for-15. All-in-all eight Irish drained a three in the game finishing 14-of-28.

Eight Irish finished with six or more points, with three finishing in double figures. As a team, Notre Dame finished 56.9 percent from the field. Preseason All-ACC First Team selection Markus Burton scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half.

Braeden Shrewsberry shot 4-of-7 from deep and 7-of-12 overall to tie Burton for a game-high 18 points. J.R. Konieczny came off the bench and hit three treys to finish with 11 points.

Notre Dame outrebounded Purdue Fort Wayne, 39-22, and forced 14 turnovers. They limited a veteran Mastodons squad to 34.6 percent shooting.

State narrowly avoid disaster. Ugh

I thought this cryptic message was about some closed scrimmage, but it was a regular exhibition game against Division II Lees-McRae, and the Wolfpack only won by 4. This post from Noah Fleischman of On3/The Wolfpacker tells the story:

11/01 Auburn hosts Florida Atlantic (Melton Scholars Program) -- 7pm ET, listen, live stats

11/01 TCU hosts Arkansas (Cook Children's Health Foundation) -- 7pm ET, live stats

Auburn 102, Florida Atlantic 70 (recap, box score, courtside cam, presser)

Miles Kelly and Johni Broome scored 15 points apiece to pace six Tigers in double figures. Freshman Jahki Howard scored 14 points, Denver Jones scored 13, freshman Tahaad Pettiford added a dozen and JP Pegues scored 11...

Broome led Auburn with nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Chad Baker-Mazara led the Tigers with six assists while committing only one turnover. Pettiford added five assists with only one turnover. Howard led Auburn with four of the Tigers’ 12 steals...

“To sell it out like we did, I can’t begin to tell our fanbase how grateful I am,” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. “What we did tonight for the Melton Scholars is incredible. To provide financial support for the Melton Scholars is really significant.”

The amount raised to support underrepresented Auburn students will be announced Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium during Auburn’s football game against Vanderbilt.

You may recall Miles Kelly as Georgia Tech's leading scorer last season.

TCU 66, Arkansas 65 (recap, box score, video clip, presser)

A 3-pointer by senior Brendan Wenzel with 5.9 seconds to play gave TCU its first lead in the second half and a 66-65 win over No. 16 Arkansas in a charity exhibition Friday at Dickies Arena...

The Horned Frogs were led by Ernest Udeh Jr.'s 13 points and eight rebounds. The junior center was 6-of-7 from the field, including five alley-oop dunks, with the primary passer being Frankie Collins. The senior guard had 10 points and a game-high six assists.
