MBB: Other Teams' Preseason Charity Exhibitions

They have nothing inside, but their guards are good. Even without Davis they have put up 78 points in 36 minutes. But they look soft to me, they've gotten stuffed at the rim a number of times and I don't think Memphis is very good.

Let's try this again. There's already a thread for Duke's regular exhibition against Division II Lincoln (PA) this Saturday, and there will be a thread dedicated to Duke's charity game against Arizona State on October 27. I'll mention the latter as part of next week's schedule, but the purpose of this thread is to check out OTHER men's college basketball teams as they play charity exhibitions before the regular season starts. Some of these games will be televised or streamed, and I'll try to post recaps if I can.

10/14 Connecticut vs Rhode Island in Mohegan Sun (Coaches vs. Cancer) -- 6pm ET, NBC Sports Boston

10/15 Memphis hosts UNC (St. Jude Children's Research Hospital) -- 7pm ET, ESPNU

10/15 USC hosts UTSA (charity?) -- 10pm ET, B1G+

Connecticut 102, Rhode Island 75 (recap, box score, highlights, full replay, postgame)

"Solo Ball (Leesburg, Va.) led the Huskies with 18 points, going 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from distance along with five rebounds. Aidan Mahaney (Lafayette, Calif.) added 17 points in his first UConn appearance off the bench and Alex Karaban (Southborough, Mass.) chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Also in double-figures for Connecticut was five-star freshman Liam McNeeley (Richardson, Texas) who scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in his first UConn action. Hassan Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) added a game-high nine assists while Tarris Reed Jr. (St. Louis, Mo.) posted eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds."

UNC 84, Memphis 76 (recap, stats, highlights, full replay, postgame)

"Seth Trimble exploded for 33 points and Elliot Cadeau posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 assists to lead ninth-ranked North Carolina to an 84-76 exhibition win at Memphis on Tuesday night in the Hoops for St. Jude Tip Off Classic at the FedEx Forum.

Jalen Washington added 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting with six rebounds for Carolina...

Playing without All-America guard RJ Davis after his injury in the Blue-White game on Saturday, Carolina also got six points and eight rebounds from Jae'Lyn Withers and six points and four boards from Ven-Allen Lubin."

Memphis did outrebound UNC 41-40, and the Heels' top rebounder was Cade Tyson, who had 9.

USC 84, UTSA 63 (recap, box score, highlights, postgame)

"USC's Saint Thomas led the team in scoring, recording 21 points and two assists. Trojans Desmond Claude and Josh Cohen also hit double digits on Tuesday, with Claude scoring 14 points and Cohen contributing 10.

In today's exhibition action, the Trojan defense kept UTSA to just 38.7 percent shooting from the floor, while USC knocked out a 54.9 percent effort on the day. As a squad, Troy also tallied four blocks, six steals and outrebounded the Roadrunners 40-26."

As you may recall, I kept track of players transferring in and out of the ACC this offseason, and UTSA came up a few times. Primo Spears (formerly FSU) led the Roadrunners with 14 points, while Mo Njie (SMU) had 10 points and 6 rebounds, and Damari Monsanto (Wake Forest) rounded up 9 points off 3-of-8 outside shooting.

Here are the rest of this week's preseason charity exhibition games.

Memphis is generally considered a bubble kinda team for the tourney this year. Probably the best team in a somewhat depleted AAC this season. Pomeroy has them 43rd in his preseason rankings.

This was a nice exhibition win for Carolina, especially without their POY candidate who is the unquestioned team leader. That said, Memphis does not have high quality big men and seems poorly equipped to take advantage of Carolina's weaknesses.

Should we be tremblingly over the impending coronation of Mr. Trimble?

Should we be tremblingly over the impending coronation of Mr. Trimble?

Wordplay aside, I see it the other way. We saw UNC collapse in 2022-2023 with a Too Many Cooks problem in the backcourt. This year's squad has a lower burden of expectations, but also a greater roster imbalance.

Keep in mind that Seth Trimble did declare for the transfer portal last spring, but apparently was convinced to withdraw. It's not crazy to think that the coaching staff gave him assurances of some kind. Assuming the Heels place Cade Tyson at the 4, they still have a logjam at 1-2-3, having to manage Trimble, RJ Davis, Elliot Cadeau, Ian Jackson, and Drake Powell (who's a wing, but would clearly be affected by a 3-guard lineup).

UNC will really struggle this season to defend and rebound inside against bigger skilled teams. We should have a nice advantage to exploit with Cooper, Khaman, Maliq.

Trimble looked really good. He hit some 3s, though his outside shot looked a little shaky. But he looked strong and crafty in the lane.

Cadeau had 13 assists to 4 turnovers. ~ 3 beautiful passes to 1 boneheaded turnover. Hit a couple of threes also, and his outside shot also looked shaky.

Washington got 17 points on 7 shots and 6 rebounds. He looked pretty good. He will drag Maluach out to the 3 point line.

The rest of the team didn't look anything special. Tyson shot 1-6 from 3 but did get 9 rebounds. The two freshman combined to go 1-8 with 4 (?) tournovers.

RJ was on the bench, maybe they blow Memphis out if he was in there.

Memphis did not look great. They have some athletes and can apply some pressure but man did they not play smart basketball.

Do you know this is like feeding a Mogwai after midnight?
I was only ever defending Kon from getting unfairly TJ'ed on this board. That is now mercifully over. Right Azz?

And I can leave the Kon hype to the professionals like Vecenie and Givony. Top 10 NBA draft pick? Maybe. But I'm personally not there yet.

I am going to attempt a civil, if pointed, disagreement, hoping to avoid a pishing contest re EK posters who commented on Kon from months ago. I realize this might go pear-shaped.

To the extent that several posters might have "unfairly TJ'ed" Knueppel, several others -- I'll guess 3-4 -- praised his talents early on. Thus, after the first several references to "Kon Island" appeared, it was suggested -- the passive voice is deliberate here -- that maybe we should call it "Kon Peninsula," as Knueppel was being praised, even if not effusively, by several posters; and then almost immediately it was humorously suggested that "Kontinent Kon" seemed more appropriate. At that moment, it seemed that, if anything, Kon-momentum was momentumizing.

But the "K2 Island" trope persisted, inaccurately, imo; indeed, persisted long after TJ crossed anyone's mind, save for a possible random thought about Tony Bennett"s next miracle, undoubtedly aided by a soft schedule. If Kon was ever "TJ'ed," surely that was "mercifully over" months ago, not just in the last few days.

The Wrath of Kon

As resident low man on the Kon Hypefest, I would be shocked if Kon got TJ'd. That being said, we only have to look down the bench to see another player where being TJ'd could happen.

As for Kon going in the top 10, I have two words for you... Michael Olowokandi. The thing with getting drafted is that all it takes is the right person falling in love with you.

Much konsternation here...

Yes, it's been weeks since I've felt the need to defend (hype) Kon on this board. Kon island is now a kontinent. And strangely it was me after CTC pointing out that Cooper and Caleb were picking on Kon's defense during the scrimmage. It made me feel a little dirty pointing that out. 🙃

But it seems that some will continue to label me as chief Konhead - or perhaps chief kon man. I will not shy away from that honor! The kid's a baller.

It should also be noted that Memphis was playing without two starters, including incoming transfer Cisse who is a big man that likely would have had a big impact on the game.
Ahhh...was wondering where Cisse was. He was a top 10 national recruit coming out of high school. I did see Nolan on the bench with Penny.
