What was that kick? I don't see the strategy at all. Clearly a bad move, but what is the thinking?

Okay. I promise not to mention this again, but I really don't understand the squib kick strategy.

We cut the lead to one with almost a full quarter to go and handed them the ball on the 50. What was the conceivable positive outcome? Do they have some stud returner they had just subbed in that was a danger to take it to the house? Did we expect them to flub the catch?

I never thought I would see the day when a football topic buries a basketball thread. Can we stop that now please?

If I had to guess, I would say that someone could easily confuse a Duke vs. Maine thread with a Duke vs. Miami thread. That could happen... once. But twice? That football play really got to @Mtn.Devil.91.92.01.10.15 -- like it tore off a piece of his soul.

Back to basketball: Full Court Network did a video podcast previewing the America East Conference last month, and the hosts spoke with Maine coach Chris Markwood and Vermont coach John Becker. (You may recall that Vermont was Duke's first round opponent in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.) After some prelude, Coach Markwood talks about his team around the 6:45 mark.

On the returners: "We did graduate some key guys, some guys that started, but I think we have some returners in those spots that played roles for us last year, that kind of got their feet wet, and had some really nice stretches. Guys like Quion Burns and AJ Lopez that are really ready to kind of step into bigger roles and are dynamic, specifically dynamic offensive players, and for them it was in year one just kind of grasping our defensive system. And now that they have a year under their belt, specifically for those two guys, I think they're in line to have nice jumps this year.

You know, on top of them obviously, we return our backcourt, Jaden Clayton and Kellen Tynes, two guys that as a head coach allow you to go to sleep pretty comfortably at night, you know, as leaders of your program -- just great young men, the hardest workers. They go about it the right way, and you feel really good about the direction of your program..."

On the incoming transfers: "We added three transfers... Ridvan Tutic from New Hampshire, who was an All-Rookie kid two years ago, had a good freshman year, started a bunch of games for them on a good UNH team that finished third. He's a big body, big physical kid, 6-10, 6-11, can really defend, which I love, can really guard and post one-on-one, and great in ball screen coverage, and a guy offensively has good feel and can finish around the rim. Coming off a knee surgery, so he's still got some work to do, but he is back playing and practicing which is nice to see, but he's still a work in progress in terms of returning to play.

We added Killian Gribben from Siena, another 6-9, 6-10 big, played a lot of minutes for them in his first two years... played about 20 minutes a game and led the MAAC in blocks. So another big mobile guy that can protect the rim and and is versatile offensively. I think he really fits how we play.

And then we added Chris Mantis from Appalachian State, who's a 6-6 wing, really shoots the ball. You know, we didn't shoot the ball consistently last year. We knew we needed to get better there. He kind of steps in day one and gives us that, along with length on the perimeter, and I think with him and AJ Lopez and Quion Burns playing more minutes. Internally we've gotten better shooting too, if those guys are playing more. So there's a lot there. I mean, I like it, but we've got a lot to put together, and get on the same page..."

Well, that explains the lack of discussion. I blame my hurricane brain. Still at about 30% of regular, which isn't that great to begin with.

Notes on Kellen Tynes from Maine’s sports site:

2023-24 (Junior Season):
  • Appeared and Started in 31 of the 32 games for the Black Bears
  • America East Defensive Player of the Year
  • Lefty Driesell Award Finalist - Given out to Top Defensive Player in the NCAA
  • America East All-Conference Third Team
  • Averaged 12.6 PPG, 3.9 APG, 2.8 RPG and 2.2 SPG
  • Led the America East in Steals with 70
  • Recorded four or more steals in seven games on the season
  • Tallied a season-high 26 against Holy Cross on Nov. 29

A good test for our backcourt, and a good chance to have the bigs push the ball.

Game day bump.

I'm not looking for answers tonight; I'm just gonna watch some hoops! Let's go Duke!
I'm with you Sage. We might start to see bits and pieces of answers but mostly I just want to watch some college basketball that COUNTS!! I might be a little excited to see what this team does... just a little. And I'm hoping for at least some improvement from the ACC in general. Hoping.

GAME DAY!

On a listener mailbag episode last week, CBS Eye on College Basketball pod's Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander started with a listener question, "What would be the funniest opening night result?" The answer, from both, Maine over Duke. With that intro...

I am interested in the following:
-Jon says he wants to play fast. The first two exhibition games had us playing much faster than Jon's first two years. We had 65-66 possessions per game. In our first two exhibitions, we had 78-79. The fastest teams in the country tend to play above 70 possessions per game.
-Jon says he wants to shoot more 3s. The first two exhibitions we shot 50% of our shots from 3 (35.5 per game). Last year it was 21 attempts per game and 36% of our shots. Can we keep that % at 45% or thereabouts?
-Assuming the starters are the same and the 3 transfers are the first group off the bench, what is he doing with Harris and Evans? Those two are both scoring machines that I think we'll need this year.

Let's go!!!

K would often leave his starters in late, even with a 25 point lead. I am guessing Jon knows that is not in his best long term interest. I have no evidence to prove my point, but I think Jon will at least be much more liberal with late game minutes. Jon wants roster continuity (as much as is feasible) and not playing capable guys won't get him that.

I dunno. I think Elon over UNCheat would be hilarious.
