MBB: Duke 78, Georgia Tech 70 Postgame Thread

Next man up mentality. Survive and advance. This is March.
Would love to watch this flip the narrative from “they can’t win without Cooper” to “we don’t need cooper effin Flagg”. Take the narrative offensively and use it as motivation. Go Duke! This can still be a special Match and April with/without both Maliq AND Cooper. Of course the odds are better with them both, but this team can do it without them.

Joel Berry is an idiot. Thinks Flagg should play tomorrow if healthy bc of rust lol. You shake off rust against the 16 seed

If Cooper is healthy enough to play, he should play. Guys roll ankles and tape them and play all of the time. It looked bad, and it probably looked extra bad to our eyes because of who it was, but if Cooper is able to play, he should.

Also, Joel Berry is most certainly an idiot.

I love it. Sounds like Coach K talking.

This is a fairly high stakes tourney setting where everyone is going to give you the best shot, and you ideally want your best players to play. Berry did say if Flagg was healthy to play him. My guess is he is not 100 percent so he probably doesn't play tomorrow. He'll probably want to play regardless.

What a test. Shooting was dreadful from 3 as the team was rusty. Getting behind by 14. Maliq went out and then Cooper. It looked dark but we made a little run before the half and the hill to climb was smaller.

Khaman had his best game and we desperately needed it. Patrick also was ready but the main story was kon who led the team and Isaah who provided much needed offense. The other story is that the defense was intense, especially in the second half, which allowed us to creep ahead and were assured with 6 minutes to go.

Hope Cooper can make it back and Maliq is probably done but some here think he is still a possibility. Great win for the team.

I’ll leave it to the docs and trainers to decide what’s best for when Coop should return but I do remember Armando Bacot rolling his ankle and coming back in just minutes later against us. Can’t remember which year that was- his third maybe? Or his fifth? Maybe his ninth? So it is possible- obviously depending upon the specific nature of the injury. I know none of us wants to put Coop or Maliq at any extra risk.

I'm definitely not a doctor but my experience with ankle sprains (assuming that's even what this is) is that you can tape them up and play on them as long as you stay warm. I don't think I've ever had one where I could have played on it 24 hours later.

Really proud of this team, things looked incredibly dark with Maliq going out early, and then Cooper with the awful ankle sprain. I have never considered it good news when extreme competitors like him express visible frustration and pain after that kind of injury, the best ones usually avoid showing any notable impairment.

The whiny worrying fan in me thought we should just punt this game and rest until the big tournament starts…thankfully Jon and his group never considered that. They played so hard and smart after the early deficit, like they believed they were still the best team in the country even without their two best defenders.

Lots of praise to dish to everyone, but holding Tech to 12 points in 15 minutes (from the very end of the first half to the first 14 minutes of the second) shows how tough and dialed in the group is. If not for Tech’s absurd 3 point shooting (44% from 3 for a team that normally 33%, including 2 for 2 from someone who took five threes all season), we would have won this by double digits comfortably.

Praying Cooper and Maliq aren’t out for extended time, hoping for the best after seeing Cooper walking back without a boot.

Agree. Day 2 is usually the worst for ankle injuries. At least for mine...

As someone who has had my fair share of rolled ankles - there is no way of knowing the severity based solely off the look and feel of the impact.

I’ve had a few that felt like my foot snapped off and yet was ready to go a couple days later. Others didn’t seem as severe but lingered for weeks.

I am not a doctor. Or a current/former d1 basketball player.

Hoping cooper got lucky here. He deserves to be fully healthy for a run at the title
