MBB: Duke 71, Clemson 77: Post-game thread

I hate playing at Littlejohn, and have some questions:

1. How is it allowable to turn off the lights during the timeout? Shouldn’t we be able to see in the huddle? That timeout, with 18 seconds left when we were trying to draw up a play, the lights were out the entire time. (I just re-watched). But their next timeout, when they were drawing up an inbounds play, the lights were left on.

2. What are the flashing lights that we see reflected on the floor? They seemed to always be flashing when we were on offense.

3. Their “mop girl” was definitely the one responsible for cleaning up the floor after the timeout. She didn’t seem to make much effort to do a thorough job. Is it our managers’ responsibility to make sure our players are protected in that way?

I’m not at all making excuses for our loss. We lost because of our play on the floor. But it just seems like shady stuff like that shouldn’t be allowed.
The lights thing reminded me of this one, although that was even worse... As they turned off the lights during a final play.

Yeah, need to learn from this. Our starters logged a lot of minutes, and perhaps we were tired, but that stretch of total offensive stagnancy was hard to watch. Not a lot of movement with and without the ball and a far cry from what we saw against Cuse. I wish we played more aggressively coming out of halftime. I felt there were driving lanes to be had where we could kick out or get to the line, because when the ball doesn't get into the bucket, getting to the line can cure some of that.

But credit their interior defense. I don't think we were out-toughed that much, but we do need to play with more aggression. Get a few more boards and that may have flipped the game.
Can’t play with more aggression coz of ticky tack calls by the refs

Learn what honestly? You can't learn when two sides are judged differently.

I honestly hate watching ACC basketball. There is really one good team and all referees do this year is not call things. Maybe the conference wants more ACC teams in there with higher seedings but this is crazy.

I want to watch actual basketball. Not wrestling.

I also can't believe our referees can be this bad.
Let it be known that I'm a UConn & Duke alum - it's been a tough weekend :( ... us Huskies haven't complained about refs and such the last few years, until this year - go figure

Sorry, I tend to be a realist ... we will/should learn from this Clemson loss, rather than make excuses

Hope to see some of y'all (not the fair weather fans) at MSG Feb 22 Duke/Illinois, Feb 23 UConn / St John's rematch! ... going up from Florida (where I'll also be in attendance for the Miami game, as usual, on Tuesday 2/25)

Go Huskies! Go Duke!

I hate to beat a dead horse, but 39 min for Proctor, 32 for Sion. 3 minutes for Foster. Something has to change

We got our butts kicked because Clemson thoroughly outclassed us in the front court. This was a men vs. boys game around the basket and the Tigers dominated in that area. It was perimeter play that kept this close. But our defense had zero answer for their offense in the last 8 minutes or so. That was the ball game. No excuses. This was a growing up game.

Omg, so many lame excuses in this thread, folks at IC must be laughing.

We looked like a very tired team, probably not because of some mysterious illness but because we have almost no bench, in true Duke tradition. I thought the better team won tonight.
What looks like IC to me is blaming people for legitimate gripes with different criteria of officiating depending on who who has the ball. I don't mind being beaten fairly. But when you call ticky tacky fouls on our players like Scion, Maluach while our players get hit in the face etc, that really sucks the joy of watching ACC games this season. Usually we are pretty good so we can win. But sometimes it's just too much.

Look I get that we are trying to be above blaming officials and trying to be like Bilas on TV but this seems so lopsided. At least don't equate people to Carolina fans for complaIning about it. Thats not fair.

Their starting 5 had 9 fouls. We had 18 and that's only because we had to play with an arm tied our back.

If you think being called for a foul super easily while the other side could just do what they want didn't affect our defense and offense, that's your choice. At least don't accuse others.

But, they let Clemson play physical not Duke. That’s the issue
I didn't see an uneven whistle. What I saw was that Clemson was doing some grabbing and hand checking on the perimeter that they weren't calling on either end. They were more physical with our ball handlers and blowing up our screens than we were on the other end.

It's that same defense we ran into against Tennessee in the tourney 2 years ago... We've got to be able to overcome it.

Meanwhile they were calling lots of fouls inside against both teams.

A lot of sour grapes in here tonight blaming the refs when Clemson shoots lights out and out rebounds us.

Yes, they were very physical with us and the refs let them play, but we'd better learn to adapt because every SEC team will play us that way.
I think less people would complain if we were Allowed to defend the same way. I think that's why some of us are a noted. We had one player fouled out, 2 had 4 and one had 3, while playing far less physical.

I think the argument about SEC etc is valid but I feel like the issue is that it wasn't evenly called. SEC games are physical for BOTH sides.

I never like to criticize players. But since I've been calling him a top 6 draft pick, I will say that 3 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block is not getting the job done for our 7'2 center when the other team scores 40 in the paint. Yikes.

Our defense was not where it has been lately. And our defense is what makes everything work. In the games where we play best, we are getting a number of easier baskets off of defensive stops, so we have fewer half court sets. When we have to rely on the half court offense on almost every possession, things usually don't work out as well.

Cooper in particular did not look to be 100%. Kudos to him for toughing it out. Hopefully we can get through this.

Cooper is personally sponsored by New Balance. Since he is playing for Duke he has to wear Nikes. Maybe he would slip less if he was wearing his preferred shoes (sarcasm).

For all of those complaining about the refs. Guess what. There are going to be more physical games. The refs might or might not call them close. We have to get used to it. Part of why we brought in our three main transfers was to have more mature players to help with this. Unfortunately one of them was out tonight. I also prefer basketball with more flow and get frustrated. But such is life. Darwin had a theory...

Like I said, I didn't notice an uneven whistle. And some games I do. To each his own.
