MBB: Duke 71, Clemson 77: Post-game thread

A few extra thoughts after a breath.

1) The whistle in this game was… something. Cooper got mauled all first half, and then suddenly it became ticky tack in the second half. It’s hard to adjust to new reffing midway through the game. One way or the other, keep it consistent. In no way why we lost the game, but very frustrating nonetheless.

2) This loss showed Mason’s value so clearly, IMHO. His body and toughness, even at 6-6, makes a difference in a grinder game like this one. Something tells me that we may be contextualizing this loss relative to Mason’s absence in a few weeks.

3) Given the above Caleb’s lack of PT was all the more conspicuous. He’s obviously snakebitten, as his inability to finish with multiple chances at the rim that one first half possession showed. But now it seems the coaching staff has either lost faith themselves or are consciously trying to give him some sort of “refresh” with minimal PT. We still need Caleb to be the best version of this team, so I hope there’s stuff going on behind the scenes to get his confidence back where it needs to be.
Disagree totally , refs 50% or more why we lost

What is the story with that flashing light whenever Duke had the ball that reflected on the court---very high schoolish;

I can't be the first one to notice it.
And I wish there were a rule that the lights can’t be dimmed at all, once the game has started. Too distracting during timeouts.

I hate playing at Littlejohn, and have some questions:

1. How is it allowable to turn off the lights during the timeout? Shouldn’t we be able to see in the huddle? That timeout, with 18 seconds left when we were trying to draw up a play, the lights were out the entire time. (I just re-watched). But their next timeout, when they were drawing up an inbounds play, the lights were left on.

2. What are the flashing lights that we see reflected on the floor? They seemed to always be flashing when we were on offense.

3. Their “mop girl” was definitely the one responsible for cleaning up the floor after the timeout. She didn’t seem to make much effort to do a thorough job. Is it our managers’ responsibility to make sure our players are protected in that way?

I’m not at all making excuses for our loss. We lost because of our play on the floor. But it just seems like shady stuff like that shouldn’t be allowed.

Clemson outplayed us and deserved to win. They exposed a couple of issues.

Just like Wake and State, they played us very tight and physical on the perimeter. They stayed home on shooters. They hedged all our screens hard and doubled the ball handler making it difficult for us to run offense. This is exactly how all tourney teams will defend us.

We are soft inside right now. Not really sure why. Cooper and our two bigs have been strong inside all year. Need to get back with our strong interior defense and rebounding. Gillis will help.

Next play!

In Wednesday’s press conference, Scheyer pointed out they missed Mason but it let them play with different lineups. Specifically he stated they’d found something with having Maliq on the floor with Khaman or Patrick. Given the size of Clemson I was expecting more of that tonight. However i don’t remember seeing two of those three players on the court together very much tonight.

We didn’t earn a win, pure and simple. We couldn’t get stops and we couldn’t get rebounds, with predictable results. And we were still within a wet spot of a win, with a rotation player out. There are worse things than a loss in early February against a good team on their home floor.

Let’s recover, then clobber Cal in Cameron and start a new streak on Wednesday.

When one side is not called for super obvious fouls and we are called for every single touch, how do you expect us to win.

I don't know what ACC is up to with today's UNC game and the insanely one sided way this game was called, it it sucks that some of you guys blame our guys for a game where we were not going. To be allowed to win.

I am so tired of this conference this year. The things not being called are so obvious that one wonders why are they not called. Are our officials this horrible?

And people co plain that we didn't play well? Every time we tried to defend it's a foul. Clemson Hacking players, no foul. What do you expect we can do?

5 thoughts...

1. I wrote in the pregame, and my prediction happened. Auburn lost to Florida. Duke loses to Clemson. And though I was screaming alternately in joy and agony (like Proctor's and Flagg's late 3s, Clemson's 0fer late at the line and the Slip III) as I really wanted Duke to win, I'm not as upset with them losing as I normally would be with a conference loss in February. The "going undefeated the rest of the way talk" was starting to become more of a talking point than the games themselves. Duke didn't need an additional target on their back being #1. And it's not like Duke lost to Miami in Cameron, they lost a Quad 1 game to a legit tourney team. I'm never fine with a loss, but this one is easier to eat.

That being said...

2. Duke let Clemson shoot 59% overall and 40% from 3. Going zone late helped, but I thought too late. Not sure why it wasn't broken out earlier, I was looking for it. Lakhin was feasting inside... And Duke gets outrebounded by 13. I think that's unacceptable. Guys were leaving early to get into transition. At some point, that had to stop to secure the board.

3. Flagg maybe hit a wall in the first half. He had a couple of steals, but he just looked off. But man, he came back big late, fighting through cramps. I wish they had waited longer for a pick with a shorter defender to take the switch, but Flagg had the ball as he should. Maybe it was a shot for him, maybe it wasn't and he was going to dish when he got doubled (which he did). But we will never know. Littlejohn can get so friggin' hot, guys were sweating everywhere... just like Cameron on a warm day in late February. It was just bad luck (though replay also showed he kind of hit a defender's ankle with his foot while driving, which may have caused balance issues, too).

4. Great game by Proctor. Duke gets blown out without him showing up big... Gillis being out hurt this game, perhaps fouls get spread out and guys can play more freely with him playing. Foster and Ngongba played basically 5 useless minutes, really needed Gillis to take some time.

5. Chase Hunter played big at the end. Hats off to him. And his brother hit that big 3 late. I don't want to lose to them, but I have no problem with Clemson. They made plays when they had to, and they deserved the win. For Duke, next game. Take out frustrations on Cal. I pity the Bears...

Not the worst loss in the world. Clemson is solid this year and they were at home. And Duke still had a chance to pull it out, save for a wet spot on the floor.

A few thoughts:

1) I am with @-jk regarding “flowy hoops.” This garbage off ball grabbing and plowing through ManMan’s legs on screens has gotta stop. It’s been the only way teams have been able to slow down the Duke offense, outside of cold shooting nights.

2) Cooper was not getting to the line at his usual rate tonight, but was getting played “physically,” as Cory Alexander repeatedly pointed out. Odd.

3) I wish Scheyer had stayed with the zone longer. They were getting killed on screen and rolls in man and made a run when they went to zone.

4) Big Pat needed more minutes in this one to battle with Lakhin. Maliq is a great defender, but Lakhin was having his way. Big Pat would have at least made Lahkin work more.

5) Flagg should have taken the shot James took. They didn’t execute well the last few possessions and went away from the guy who went on a personal 8 point run at the end.

Hopefully Flagg was just cramping and Gillis is back for the Illinois game.

Tough loss, we will learn from this ...
Learn what honestly? You can't learn when two sides are judged differently.

I honestly hate watching ACC basketball. There is really one good team and all referees do this year is not call things. Maybe the conference wants more ACC teams in there with higher seedings but this is crazy.

I want to watch actual basketball. Not wrestling.

I also can't believe our referees can be this bad.

The team did seem a bit listless so maybe they are fighting a bug. I would love Proctor, first half guy, to play as well in second half.

Evans is an assassin so wish he would play more but seeing his rebound ripped away from him made me realize why he doesn’t play more. Nonetheless he is so fun.

If Clemson wasn’t 13 for 22 from FT it might not have been as close. Even with Duke being low energy we almost won so not really worried about our team. Clemson couldn’t miss. They played well and deserved to win based on their play in second half.

Flagg was so clutch down the stretch it is really too bad he had the slip at the end. He seemed gassed.

I'm not significantly bothered by this one.

They used a game plan to attack the basket with people setting screens on the help and/or primary defenders over and over. They also made some solid and occasionally great plays when going 1v1 in and around the paint. We never really shut that down. Learning to be done.

We were out-hungered. This showed in their rebounding advantage and our step down from our normal defensive intensity.

There were also so many places where we missed making plays by a matter of inches - stepping on lines, balls just beyond outstretched hands on passes and rebounds, etc. Some nights the 50/50 balls don't go your way.

Couldn't care less whether the reffing was an issue. Reffing is out of our control. Yes, it impacted the game, but we had plenty of places where we could have made plays and didn't. Control what you can control.

On a night when things weren't going our way, we fought through it and had our chances down the stretch. Mental toughness was there. Unbelievable that Flagg was hitting big-time shots while cramping. Love that other players kept us in the game while Flagg was struggling some.

There were a number of places where the players and coaches could have done a bit better. Now the team can go watch game film, make some adjustments, and get better. Oh, and hopefully come out hungrier and take it out on the next opponent.

We need Patrick Mahomes so we get all the calls.
