MBB: Duke 70, Seattle 48 Post-game Thread

It felt like we took a step back on offense. I think that was due to horrendous shooting, and playing a lot of combinations that didn't gel at all. Jon substituted like this was an exhibition game, which was quite surprising. I was pleased to see Isaiah get some run, however the substitution patterns prevented any flow. I would really like to see Jon try out our normal 8 man rotation, but with Evans getting some time as the 9th man.

We still don't run great sets on offense. It's almost always ballscreen, drive, and kick for 3. I think Jon expects teams to start respecting our shooting, which will open up spacing for everything else. In the meantime, we need better ideas. Seattle, like several opponents, overplayed the passing lanes. You beat this with backscreens, backdoor cuts, etc, but we just didn't do that. Right now, this team doesn't pass and cut very well. Hopefully things will gell with time.

Defensively, we were great. No notes, other than giving up so many free throws. Eventually someone is going to have a bad FT shooting game and our defense will look even better.
Yea... Trying combinations today. Maybe it is better to work on the 8-man rotation and get that going. But, I would have Gillis court time be split between him and Evans. The other 7 get the normal rotation.

On one of the preseason pods, Marks mentioned that Jon is comfortable winning rock fights. Well, Duke won the rock fight and like all rock fights it was capital-U ugly. Before I go look for some beauty to cleanse my ocular palate, I will say that I am happy that Evans and Ngongba got a decent amount of run with the regulars.

I’m back from the game. There was an incident in the second half on the West side of Cameron. I was on the East side so I could see little but I heard that EMS was doing chest compressions but what I heard may have been wrong. I hope the person made it. Anyone know more?

Today was a good example of why playing 10-11 guys is not ideal. It's tough, because we have a lot of guys who can play. However, we need to develop the chemistry with the top 8 if we want to take a step forward on offense.

Gillis v Evans is interesting. It's looking like we may have greater need for offense than we do for defense. Mason's shot will probably come through, but if it doesn't?

Why not decide on Gillis v Evans base on game situation, matchups, etc.

Duke was pretty much right on the KenPom and Torvik projections for margin of victory, albeit at a slower pace. That actually means the efficiency margin outperformed the advanced metrics.

There were two noteworthy things from tonight, in my mind.

1 - Jon very clearly made an effort to get Evans in the game early

2 - This continues a trend of slower paced games - it’s been weeks at this point since a Duke game exceeded 70 possessions.

Defense was excellent tonight except for all the fouls. Turnovers remain an issue, especially in the paint.
Teams will continue to sag in the middle until we start consistently being 35-40% from 3.

BTW, I do not recall another time seeing a team score 50% 0f their points from the foul line. I imagine somebody can pull up another example but not any that come to mind!

Duke’s offense isn’t working because out guards can’t penetrate and get to the rim. We resort to standing around outside until someone decides to jack a three. I think we need to pass the ball much more than we do to generate some better looks.

I didn't see the incident, but I saw the ems folks helping someone out (with applause from the surrounding seats). It seemed like the gentleman was able to walk on his own, so hopefully everything is ok.

I think the KU game went under but if you count tonight 17 of the last 22 Duke games have gone under the total. Jon wants control. I would prefer we run more and blow them out. We have the bodies to do it in spurts.

Definitely need to be inside out. Man Man and Flagg can be used more in that set up instead of all of these bricked 3s offense. If the goal is just shoot 3s then Harris and Evans need to play they'll make them over Gillis
Perhaps it's time to stop running a 5-out offense with either or both of Khaman and Brown. Both have made a 3, but it's not enough to hit one every 7 games, it is not worth it. Duke could/should work on getting paint touches, maybe even, heaven forbid, run plays for scoring points in the paint.

referring to the above comment, if our bigs, or anyone really, set screens for our guards to get into the paint, the we could get into the paint more often.

The worst thing about our offense is that on many possessions, there is not even an effort to get the ball inside before shooting a 3. Most of our 3s tonight were actually fairly decent looks, and most teams would have probably taken them. But this team needs to have greater variety of shots to give teams more things to worry about.

I’m not a scientist, but I think a passed ball moves faster than a dribbling player. If our guards aren’t quick enough to penetrate, then passing the ball makes sense. (Sorry if I’m sounding like a broken record with the “we sure do like to dribble a lot and we need to pass more to find open opportunities” schtick.)
