MBB: Countdown to Craziness

GoDuke has recaps of the men's scrimmage and the women's scrimmage. The former recap includes links to Coach Scheyer's presser and the PDF summaries of each men's game (box score, play-by-play, shot chart).

In case you were unable to watch CTC, Duke offers one of their Every Bucket videos:

SLAM Magazine has a recap of the event (the arrivals, the intros, some highlights -- for both the men and women):

On3's Jamie Shaw has 1-minute post-scrimmage locker room interviews with Cooper Flagg and Caleb Foster, and a 7-second Q&A with Kon Knueppel about... you know.

I'd really like to see a box score. By my eye, Tyrese, Cooper, Kon, and Foster all had at least 3 assists.

I was disappointed to see that none of the newcomers on the women's side participated in the scrimmage at all. Not even Toby, who got some of the loudest cheers in the introduction. I hope we get to see at least a little bit from them at practice today.

Yeah that was a truly bizarre scrimmage. Should have been blue/white like the men’s team. I can’t for the life of me figure out why the women’s team played a men’s practice team. Why not play all of your team members (especially after the hype of Toby who dunks)

I know this isn’t gonna be popular on this board but I think Proctor has to come off the bench. He is isn’t in the top 5 now.
I'm not sure about that statement, but i think there is ample room for concern when (in the 2nd game) the team with the purported starting PG lost by like 15. Tyrese is a good player, and i think he's a good PG, but if all he's achieving is a linear growth rate then i think that's about what his limit will be: a good (myabe very good) college PG. His game improved a little bit from his Fr. to So. years, and he did deal with some injuries at multiple times during the year. The thing i haven't seen from Tyrese is an explosive, "angry", "i need to dominate my opponent" type player. If we don't see that player this year, then we better get ready for Tyrese to have a Sr. season.

His defense was stellar last year.

I was very entertained by the game when ESPN decided to actually show it. I mean, who shows replays during live game action? What I saw was pretty much what I expected to see. The only new info that I brought away from the game was I am on Team Headband.

I said in the chat that an aggressive Tyrese is a good Tyrese. I think we saw that at the start of the first game, but then it was gone. His defense on Caleb was stellar in the first game. He was switched off Caleb in the second game.

For the gamers out there, it was like ESPN turned the “instant replay” setting as high as it could go.

In all seriousness, it was not a good production. I am wondering if there was some AI experimentation happening during this event. It seemed as though there was some logic built in to show replay after every made basket. I have a hard time imagining that an actual human would stick with that decision once they saw what it looked like in production.

It seemed like Tyrese was focusing on driving and distributing on offense. Give how many shooters and scorers we have, I think a Tyrese that limits the # of shots he takes and focuses on defense and being a orchestrator might be what the team needs. The team has talked a lot about people accepting their roles, and this may be part of what that translates to.

Or Foster may say, "Stand back, I've got this."

If we see some additional improvement in Tyrese's shooting he may not be a liability on offense. With the typical PER and 3P% improvements as a junior, that would equate to ~ 15.5 PER and 37% 3P%. Certainly not elite, so yes, Foster may replace him.

His defense passes the eye test but advanced stats aren't as impressed. Curious if anyone has data showing he's a strong defender.

On3's Jamie Shaw has 1-minute post-scrimmage locker room interviews with Cooper Flagg and Caleb Foster, and a 7-second Q&A with Kon Knueppel about... you know.

And now Jamie Shaw has a free article for On3 about his observations from CTC. He had something to say about nine of Duke's players, and I've extracted a line or two for each below.

Khaman Maluach: "On this floor, he was an active rebounder, high-pointing the ball in traffic and he protected the rim, blocking or altering shots from would-be attackers."

Cooper Flagg: "While his offensive game can be somewhat vanilla, the defensive end is where he brings the flash and sizzle. He cleaned up multiple shots at the rim and closed off angles in the passing lanes."

Isaiah Evans: "What makes Evans so dangerous as a shooter is when he is coming off any type of movement, or a kick-out close outs, his length and size allow him to get clean looks regularly."

Sion James: "He spaced the floor with his shooting and he showed excellent anticipation and some twitchiness on the defensive end."

Tyrese Proctor: "He looked very poised in this setting, getting the ball to his teammates and not turning it over."

Caleb Foster: "After going for 2 points (0-6 FG) in the first half, Foster scored 14 points in the 10 minute second half, going 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from three."

Kon Knueppel: "Not much with his game is flashy but he seems to consistently be able to make the fundamental play."

Maliq Brown: "His defensive abilities are unique, able to guard along the perimeter, get in the passing lanes, as well as switch and disrupt things on the block."

Mason Gillis: "[H]is ability to space the floor will get him on the court. He is a solid team defender and did a good job here as an area rebounder."

I was joking. It was one scrimmage. I'm pretty sure Jon won't be following your advice, but you could email him your recommendations.
No need to email, I’m sure he is following this thread. Jon, feel free to follow my recommended lineup, I don’t even need any credit.

R.J. Davis was 9 of 26 in two games against Duke, where he was primarily guarded by Tyrese, IIRC. He averaged 13.0 ppg against Duke vs. 21.2 for the season.
