Maliq Brown injury vigil - part 3

I don't worry about Brown getting up to speed as much as I worry about how long he can play without (inevitably, IMO) dislocating it again. Trust that John has put a lot of cogitation into this.
It might be a situation where Brown is used to flip the momentum of a game in little spurts here and there. Ultimately though, you have to win the game you are playing.

This is a tricky decision. As @budwom cited above, very high odds are that he will dislocate it again. Question on the team's part is how to manage his time before that happens, and the question for him is whether he's wiling to go out there knowing that, at some point, he is going to be in pain again. I know I would be thinking about that. However, since he hasn't had surgery yet, it would appear that he has decided to risk it to play again this season.

CJS made it pretty clear at a recent presser that Maliq wants to come back this season.

If we are good enough to advance and face Alabama, I would love to have Maliq available to guard Grant Nelson for at least 10 minutes. Nelson is really good and can create big match up problems. Maliq has the size to take away Nelson's post moves and has the speed to stick with him when he's on the perimeter.

I'd like to see him out there to shut down one of Arizona's perimeter guys, preferably Caleb Love, which a healthy Maliq can do even at 6'8" or 6'9". But I don't see him being ready for the S16/EE.

saw a post saying he's going to try to practice tomorrow, have no idea if this is true, but I give it some credibility.

Just tape his arm with the dislocated shoulder to his body and let him play with just the other arm. He'll be fine.

He'd still get more deflections than the unc defense combined. Seriously though, there's gotta be some sort of brace or something that at least lowers his chance of another dislocation.

Shoulder surgery has come a long way I’m both a physician and shoulder surgery patient. Before arthroscopic techniques were developed over last 40 years access to what needed repaired was very difficult. Lots of people had “trick” shoulders which would dislocate easily even with something as simple as putting a shirt on they popped it back in or had doc do it and just lived with it. It certainly looks like Malik will need surgery after season is over. The risk of making it significantly worse is minimal. But what I think what people are missing if Devils make it to Final Four what does Malik want? I suspect he will want desperately to play. I don’t see how you can deny him the opportunity even knowing it might very well dislocate again.

That’s a shoulder brace. Obviously, not a foolproof solution.
A shoulder has to be one of the hardest parts on the body to protect. A knee brace has lots of support, in that it is in effect an exoskeleton. Not much one can do for a shoulder except don't use it, which is why we saw him in a sling earlier on.

Oh, he’ll play all right, and well. I can feel it.

The basketball gods are with Duke this season. It’s been a magical ride, and our fine young men aren’t going to stop until they’ve finished the job in true Blue Devil style.

I don’t believe in jinxes, but I do believe in confidence, determination, talent, preparation, and will to win, and our guys have all that and more.

Bengay. It’s YMCA proven. Plus it irritates the opponents olfactory system. Slather it on and hit the floor. Let’s go!
