Maliq Brown injury vigil - part 3

I don't understand the human body all that well (a bad sign for my job, haha) considering Maliq's seemingly innocuous injury kept him from the sideline while Cooper's seemingly catastrophic injury was minor enough for him to be on the bench without assistance. 🤷‍♂️

More than anything I feel for Maliq for the way he's fought back from injuries twice, then been indispensable parts of victories over UNC, only to roll snake eyes on the injury lottery again. Kudos to Pat for playing how he did, and this team can obviously still win it all without Maliq, but it becomes a lot harder.

Here's hoping this is was perhaps more of a scare than anything and that he can continue the pattern and be back for UNC. I'm not holding out hope, but it would certainly fit the storyline!

We need one of our orthopods to check in on this. Would they operate now and hope for rehab to be underway for next season?

I had a friend who would dislocate his shoulder pretty regularly. He would just pop it back in and call it a day. He’d be back playing pickup in a week or two. He eventually had surgery to correct it. If there’s no long term risks I would assume Maliq can play as long as he’s not in pain. I have no clue if repetitive dislocation can cause soft tissue damage. If that’s the case I’d say he’s done for the year.

Most common for in-season athletes is to do surgery after the season is over. Akin to when Chris Carrawell had the same problem. There's more than enough time for rehab after the final four.

The caveat is whether there was any additional structural injury after today's dislocation. Generally I wouldn't expect additional injury from recurrent dislocations - the labrum is already torn and that's what allows the dislocation in the first place. But you never know. I assume they'll get him a scan to see.

Best case scenario is get him to the ER, get him sedated, pop it back into place, and start recovery. Barring additional structural injury, return to play should be shorter with each subsequent dislocation.

There are a lot of variables of course that will dictate what happens with Malik's injury, most of which we'll never know and which make speculating/predicting difficult.

This is my hope. Remember Jon said that Maliq had been telling him he was ready to go for 2 weeks.

Thank you for the expert analysis. Of course, we will still issue uninformed opinions!

Just show Maliq the film of the trainer popping Chris's shoulder back into place on the court and continuing to play. I still remember cringing (along with 9413 other fans) when that happened.

Optimism? From a trusted source? This doesn't belong on DBR, good sir!

Shoulder injuries are tricky but based on the way I saw his shoulder pop out we shouldn't expect to see him for a while. He likely will be immobilized for the next week at least. It will also be a tremendous mental hurdle because he likes to reach and deflect passes and that would have to cease. So much of his defense is having his arms up in the air and I would hate to do that with a bum shoulder.

The last time he came back as a knock down three point shooter. Maybe this time the injury will provide Steph Curry's shooting AND dribbling powers.

In all seriousness, I hope he gets better soon. He seems like a great person and teammate. If he can go in the tourney, that's a huge boost to us.

What was his injury? Sorry couldn't watch.

You can see it now, as part of the ESPN highlights. Start around the 5:50 mark of the video. They show it live, and then a slow motion replay.

Press conference: Maliq was taken off in a stretcher because he was in so much pain and is now at the hospital. Blech.

Here's the press conference and a full transcript.

Coach Scheyer: "I'll just tell you real quick, Maliq was in a lot of pain, and he re-dislocated his shoulder. That's why -- I'm sure some of you saw it, we got him a stretcher just because -- to tolerate the pain. He was in a lot of pain. He's at the hospital now. We'll figure out how he's doing. I'm going to try to figure out if I can go see him right now."

"I don't [know the prognosis], and I'd rather not speculate. Obviously, he's going to miss time no matter what. I mean, this is going to be -- is there a chance at some point? I would hope so. But my main concern is just seeing him in such pain. I would hate to speculate without really knowing."
