Jon Scheyer - Coach of the Year race

I'd just like to add, as I re-read The Legends Club (of the late John Feinstein), that in it, he talks about Bill Guthridge winning more games in his first three seasons than any coach in Division I history (this was passed by Mark Few in 2002 with 81 and then Brad Stevens in 2010 with 89).

Guthridge went 80-28, 32-16 in his three years from 97/98-99/00.

Scheyer currently stands at 85-21, 48-12 in his three seasons so far and is still going in his third season.

I know this isn't part of the coach of the year race, but I just wanted to point out how the continuity has continued.

Scheyer article: Athletic

Great article by Brendan Marks on how Jon thought about building this team in today's print version of the NY Times. Published March 19 in the Athletic. I don't know if this was posted but it's a great article.

Really interesting discussions with 6 NBA coaches on how to build the team. Length was the answer along with toughness and shooting.

In Jon we trust. Screw the awards.

Its my impression and recollection that K was stymied by getting an even break within the ranks of the ACC journalists.
So he did and end around and went more national so the local guys would be forced to react to something.

Is my memory failing me or was this not a thing?

Either way I hope this is the start of Scheyer getting more traction inside the ACC.
Another good way to do that is win a title... 😇
So lets hope for the best on all counts.

COTY tends to go with the most surprising coach who overachievea based on expectations. That usually leaves any Duke coach out of the running.

As I recall, Duke was slotted in the top ten but not top five before play began in most polls. That probably eliminates CJS from contention.
The ACC still has some knowledgeable reporters who know basketball and keep up pretty well with the ACC. The overall quality has declined with the expansion of the conference because sports guys can't cover the huge areas.

ACC is moronic. They gave the award to Kelsey but also post this. And everybody is mocking them.

I'm not saying you're wrong - we, as Duke fans on DBR, are absolutely mocking them. But are any other sports media outlets even mentioning this?

I think the general fanatacism of our lovely denizens is not par for the course outside of very specific communities.

Being the "best" in the ACC is a far cry from doing it nationally. 17 teams vs well over 100. I've got no problem with Kelsey being the winner, what he did was flat out amazing. I can say that and still say that there's no better coach this year on the national stage than Jon Scheyer.

Nice article on Scheyer by Norlander:
When Jon was named head coach I said that I would wait three to five years before giving a thumbs up or down o his hire.

I think I'm ready to make the call. (y)

(Regardless of the Final Four results)

Correct me if I am wrong on this, but Scheyer is only head coach in NCAA men's basketball history to achieve these 3 things in the first 3 years of his career:

1. Win a conference regular season championship
2. Win a conference tournament championship
3. Reach a Final Four

He also has another ACC Tournament Title and an Elite 8 run. Good start.

Izzo did it in 4 year (all three in year 4 actually).
Dusty May had all three in year five.
Bill Gutheridge does not have a regular season championship but has a second Final Four.
Hubert doesn't have an ACC tournament.
Roy's missing a conference title too (Big 8).
I think Dan Monson is missing a conference tournament.
Shaka Smart no regular season.
Brad Stevens - BINGO.

And Brad Stevens is an individual that Jon states has been a coaching consultant for him as he has grown into this role.
