Jai to Miami

I hope Coach Scheyer doesn't hire an assistant coach until the season is over. I had rather have the coaches that have watched every practice, and every game help make decisions going forward. I sure don't want Coach K on the bench. I'd be concerned we'd see the isolation offense again. I like the way the ball moves with this group.

GoDuke!
There will be no additions to the bench this year. It’s a non- suggestion suggestion.

Would love to see Scheyer being in a big name, temporary coach just for the tournament. Kind of like how Ohio state football brought in chip kelly for their tournament run this year, but even shorter. Think Jay Wright, Jim Boeheim, Ol’ Roy???, or a retired Duke NBA player (Battier, Boozer, Hill). Coach K could help facilitate it. It’s crazy but these days all the norms are changing. Fun to think about 😀 instead of stewing on Jai leaving.
Interesting idea. I’ve seen it posed several different places. However, a well known name could be as be as or larger distraction as Jai leaving. In addition, the consultant would not know our personnel anywhere near as well as the current staff regarding the strengths, weaknesses, personalities of our players or have a deep relationship with them. It takes time to learn. Also what if the voice is not entirely consistent with Jon’s or what he is trying to do? Finally, how current would they be on potential opponents if they are not currently in college basketball?

It will be almost a month since it was publicly known that Jai was leaving by the time the tournament begins. Jon may have known even earlier of the possibility and already thought of adjustments to the stafff. In sum, although a huge loss, plenty of time to adapt.

If Scheyer is gonna go outside any idea who he would look at for replacements? I'd take a look at
Dean Oliver Wisconsin
Brandon Chappel Texas

None of dukes recruits are going to Miami. On top of that just being the fact, it is worth the reminder that While Jai may have been their lead recruiter, Scheyer is the one who closed and they chose to sign with Duke.

Also, Nolan is not coming back to Duke on this coaching staff. People should stop inquiring about that.
I really can't imagine a scenario where that happens in the near future. I won't say that Nolan wouldn't ever come back to Duke but he seems to have a knack of rubbing people the wrong way wherever he goes.

I know we've played this thread out, and I don't want to re-read all 22 pages, but has anyone noted that Jai is the 1st coach of the CJS coaching tree? I think that's right and I don't believe I'm missing anyone. From what I've seen so far, that tree will eventually have a lot of branches.

Interesting... I went back and looked. Scheyer's first staff in 2022-2023 was Chris Carrawell, Jai Lucas, Amile Jefferson, and Mike Shrage (per goduke.com). So... would you also consider Amile as a "branch" of Scheyer's tree? Or not, since Amile is not a head coach

Well Jefferson started his trajectory on coach K’a final staff as director of player development. C-well was an assistant on coach k’a staff for several years
So are they considered part of coach k’s tree?I guess it depends.

On goduke.com, Amile is not listed on the "coaching staff" in Coach K's final year. Maybe "director of player development" is not considered as "coaching staff"? Amile is listed as "assistant coach" in Scheyer's first year. I understand C-Well is probably Coach K's tree... but Scheyer did retain him for his first staff, which I suppose he didn't have to. Anyway... just interesting topic to me...

Yes I made the point upthread. It's a solid branch early in Jon's career.

Or Coach K himself?
