Jai to Miami

If you don't like it, ignore the thread. It is very clearly labeled and is in no way misleading. It's not like you run the place. Mods - please tell Debbie Downer to lighten up?
Nice try! Mods just try to keep DBR from following the rest of the interwebs into full-on Lord of the Flies. Y'all have to use your words nicely and work this one out amongst yourselves or there's no dessert tonight.

And Jai is part of the Duke coaching tree; he'll remain a DBR topic of interest moving forward beyond just being an ACC coach.

Remember the rumors that we would lose recruits when K retired. Nobody is leaving Duke behind to play for Lucas lol

Note, I haven't read this entire thread (it's 24 pages long). Surely I'm not the only one that thinks it's not a great look, deserting the team in middle of a legitimate title run. Not to mention pretty crappy of Miami to be recruiting our coaches in season.

I'm happy for Jai and wish him decent luck but I'd be a lot happier if this was announced after the NCAA tournment.

That's pretty much a summery of the entire 24 pages.

It's different but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. People leave jobs while in the middle of managing a big project all the time, I don't think college basketball coaches shouldn't be able to. Duke not only has a deep bench of players but also a deep bench of coaches/staff.

I watched the Jai-Miami intro presser. Jai half-read a prepared speech, which made good points. He happened to emphasize relentlessness, which I think is crucial in sports. Don’t know whether it was the mic or Jai’s speaking style, but his words were not always clear, as his voice sometimes faded. Perhaps that wasn’t a problem in the room.

From a recruiting perspective, the very first questioner asked him about poaching Duke signees. His response was a kind of embarrassed smile and something about not being able to talk about recruits. He added quickly that going forward Miami needed to get local kids to stay home.

He did not totally shut down the issue of the Boozers; nor, imo, did he intend slyly to hint that he’d try to poach. I’d be interested to know if anyone else saw the presser, and whether anyone had a different take on how Jai handled the blunt question about the Boozers.

Btw, I also caught a few minutes of the Luke Loucks presser at FSU. He spoke assertively, no notes. In that specific regard, pretty impressive.

Advance warning: I'm going to post the introductory press conference video on Monday.

Miami posted an official video earlier today that had sound issues (specifically, no sound for several minutes). They've since provided a new working video of Jai Lucas' introductory press conference. Around the 12-minute mark, Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald gets right to the point.

Michelle Kaufman: "Welcome to Miami. I have two quick ones, if you don't mind. One, how difficult was it to leave Duke knowing what's ahead for them, and how hard was that transition for you? Two, people all want to know about the recruiting part. Are there any Duke commits that might want to flip here? Have you heard from any of them? Are you going to try to flip them, or are you going to leave them alone?"

Coach Lucas: "First part of the question -- it was extremely hard to leave, just off the relationships you've built there. I was there at the beginning with Jon [Scheyer] three years ago when we started his program at Duke, and then this year we finally had a team that could win it all, and you know you recruited those kids, and we had returning players who've been there three years, and you build that relationship and that bond with them. That was the hardest part, just leaving them.

It wasn't hard to leave for these reasons, because this is something I wanted, and you know the times have changed. This is the first year teams didn't qualify for the ACC Tournament, so the season here [at Miami] was over. So I felt like it was my responsibility to get down here as quick as I could and make sure we got started on the right foot and got the program going. That was really important to me.

Secondly, I can't speak on anybody who is signed, committed anywhere, but you know one thing, and it's just true moving forward, is you always want to keep the best players home. So that's what we'll try to do moving forward."

"Especially with this next class coming up -- the 2026 class -- I think [the state of] Florida has the best talent coming out these next couple years, so it's just building those relationships, getting them to understand the value of staying home."

Reporter: {doesn’t begin question with “Bienvenido a Miami”}

Jai: {rips off mike} We’re done here. {storms out}
