Hurricane Helene

Oh, I'll tell anyone I'm a lucky man.

When we first met, I was a butcher in Seattle. When she would come visit, I'd get a holler from the counter "hey [last name] your disproportionately good looking girlfriend is here."

They meant it as a burn. It didn't feel that way.
Yeah for real. Dating and marrying up just means we have personality. There's something they like. And I am willing to shut up about it. I am pretty used to hearing "Really?!?! Him?!?!" when I am on a date.

In other news, another bout of political disaster tourism has our town in complete gridlock all day for the second time this week.

Usually when this happens it's pretty annoying. But with so many people still in desperate need of supplies, having things clogged for six hours twice this week feels particularly ghoulish and obnoxious.

And yes, in this case, it's absolutely both parties.

Shameless plug - my nonprofit os launching an immediate response to the current needs of Western North Carolina.

Here's the Go Fund Me. If you have any questions that aren't answered either there or on our website, please PM me.
Hey, there's been an uptick in donations, and I suspect some are coming from this board. Because of the way GFM works, I have no way to know which folks are from DBR. If you are comfortable dropping me a PM and letting me know that you've donated, I would really like to send a personalized thank you and be able to match the contribution to the DBR user. If you prefer donating anonymously, I still VERY much appreciate the gift.

This community is wonderful.

On the other end of Helene, I was talking to the realtor we use in Florida for our annual October trip (which will be November next year, giving it a try!). She said they HOPE to have guests back in units by the end of the year. While this is not the busiest time of year for them, although Christmas is a popular time, they are still hurting from the lack of tourism. Some restaurants are open, but anything with only one level is pretty much destroyed. She said of the 300+ condos that they manage, only about 5 UNITS had any damage, mostly from blown out windows. But the BUILDINGS, which they do not manage, are in bad shape. I think they are all going to require new elevators, which will take time to complete. She said the lobby of the place where we were going to stay had sand TO THE CEILING. No way an elevator system can take that much salt water and sand and be reparable.

They are also having to sift the sand on the beach (that was not washed away) to get debris like glass and wood out of it to make it safer for barefoot tourists. They have been warning people who are insisting on going to the beach to wear shoes at all times b/c all kinds of crap was washed back over the sand. Supposedly, the dolphins and pelicans have made their way back, so I guess that's a good sign.

Snowbirds generally start in force after Christmas, some sooner. They will have to compete with workers for limited places. The shoulder months are important to many small businesses to survive until the season starts but I'm guessing housing rates will be at a premium and the trickle down affect will help what small businesses can manage to get up and running.

As for elevators they are suppose to send them to the top and shut them down. During Hurricane Micheal, our business sat six feet higher that the ones on either side and the street. It never flooded but it became an island. The water table rose so high that the pit had five feet of water that seeped through. It only took a day for the company to execrate the water and hydrophilic fluid, replace the packing and get it going. It would have be quicker if it was cabled. New elevators are going to take months.

Our local Transportation Development Association has started encouraging tourists to return. Many folks are pretty salty about it; most still don't have potable water in their pipes, maybe in the immediate area are still missing electrical or Internet. And if you go downstream (Marshall, Hot Springs) it's far far worse.

I get that small businesses need money from tourists. But let us fell our buildings and bury our dead first, please.

So are PMs now the same as the conversations? I messed up and made my donation through the website instead of the GFM site. Sorry about that.

Found the PM function.

Well, the place we stayed the last two years had one elevator for sixty units, and it was constantly breaking down. I am hoping they use this time to replace it, and maybe even add another one. We were switching to a new place this year that only had one elevator but also only 15 units. Every time they have surge, they have extensive elevator damage and after the one this summer, they had trouble finding the parts, so elevators were down all over - according to the realtor.

Amazing drone video of what mostly remains of chimney rock. Some folks from WV brought down their heavy equipment and built a temporary road to start getting supplies into the area.

Saw a few videos of that .the drone footage really puts it in perspective.
I have a lot of respect for the W.V. guys doing this.this is what America is .others helping others .really makes you proud of people.
