How does Duke football finish out? (Poll)

Duke is now Bowl-eligible at 6-1, but has a tough gauntlet to finish the season. How do we finish?

You 5-0 folks are not optimists. The real optimist is the lone individual (not me, I am not sure who it is) who voted for "other."

Now, some of you may think "other is a vote for 0-5. But, no... You see, if Duke goes 5-0 over its next 5 games it will most assuredly be in the ACC championship game (likely against Clemson). So, the "other" voter is actually picking 6-0 as Duke's remaining regular season record.

For shame, Ozzie... someone has surpassed you!

I didn't 0-0-5 as one of the choices. That's an other possibility.

It could happen.

It’s not happening, but yes, Duke would likely be in the ACC championship game if we win out. We’d be tied with the loser of the Clemson/Pitt game if both Pitt and Clemson win all other games. But, Pitt’s remaining schedule is very tough and don’t think they will have only one loss.

Tiebreaker is very complicated since we do not play either team and neither Pitt nor Clemson will have played GaT who beat us.

Maybe we can resume this conversation after we smack SMU.

I have a hard time seeing us score enough to beat SMU or Miami. VT will be tough the way they have played the last few weeks. State and Wake are plenty beatable, even though both just won this weekend. I'd say 1 or 2 more wins are the two most likely outcomes. I'll be slightly optimistic and say we claim the state title and pull into the barn at 8-4(4-4). That would be a hell of a year under the circumstances.

I guess that post is “meta”—outside conventional Thinking. As in I met a dude who is craz, uh more optimistic than Oz. Actually the announcers of Friday night game considered this scenario where Duke might compete for the ACC title. I’m all in.

Nope, I clarified my other vote upthread that I think we'll go 0-5 over the next 5 games. I hope I'm wrong. I would need to see who we are playing in the bowl game before I could predict that one.

This week the Duke defense gets a taste of Texas football. Duke remains #1 nationally in TFLs at 9.9 pg. Howard is tied for 5th with 11. Four others with 7.

Smack SMU? That is some optimism given that they are an 11.5 point favorite. (We opened as a 3.5 point favorite over FSU).

I’ll go with 3-2, wins over Wake and State, and one other win vs SMU or VT.
Our D has been so tough and consistent. I think they’ll handle SMU or VT and our O will do just enough

Murphy does run, without the ball after each handoff. It is weird. Perhaps someone can explain to me the point of that.
At least during the last game, almost every handoff looked like a read option mesh, except that Murphy never keeps the ball. It's weird and maybe Murphy just has an unusual handoff style. But if the plays are indeed read options, then that would explain Murphy running as if he kept the ball. It's just that no one is going to be fooled if he never keeps the ball.

The handoffs are definitely something I want to pay closer attention to on Saturday.

It would be absolutely historic if Murphy has been sandbagging all season long, waiting until we hit the really tough part of the schedule to surprise teams. On Saturday he suddenly rips off a long run or two against SMU and then turns into Lamar Jackson against Miami next week.

Murphy started two games at Texas in 2023 where he had one rush for -18 yards. He isn’t sandbagging. What he is is 8-1 as a starter in his career to date. I’m not thrilled with his lack of mobility but as long as Duke is winning I’m not complaining.

My son goes to USC, and I went to the USC-Maryland game on Saturday. About 80% of USC's plays start with Miller Moss doing an awkward two-handed fake handoff that fools no one.

So they end up with a cement-footed quarterback spending an extra second or two to get back into the pocket before he starts surveying his options.

If you want to make a USC person cry, just mention Lincoln Riley's buyout clause.
