FB: Duke 26, Northwestern 20 (2OT)

I just can't believe someone would give up on our team after witnessing the "fumble." Oh my, the guilts are hitting me. Out, damned spot! I confess that a close friend also turned it off after the fumble...just sayin. Still learning life lessons here...and lessons following Duke football. Not for the faint of heart.

My haste was also encouraged by the overall level of play on the O side. I confess that I was pretty down on the O by then. I need to channel the patience of Sagegrouse!
it was like 1am.

It was past bedtime and being recorded. Still, I am chagrined for missing the live excitement. But, when warned, watched the last few OT plays live.

For all the "we didn't deserve it" talk, Duke actually outgained NU 4.9 yards per play to 3.9. If you outgain a team by a full yard per play, you ought to win most of the time. In some sense, it was the mistakes that prevented Duke from winning a little more easily. If not for the fumbled punt, dropped passes, and 3 dropped INTs, perhaps Duke wins in regulation.

Of course, a caveat to the above was that Duke didn't really move the ball consistently until the 4th quarter. 170 of our 342 yards came on our last four possessions. Overall, Duke ran 30 times and passed 40. On those last 4 possessions, it was 17 passes and 6 runs (one of those being a sack). It certainly seems like a passing heavier approach is in order.

Agree on all counts, especially that Duke really should have won in regulation. I could enumerate the reasons, but that missed throw in the endzone to a wide-open Moore late in the game is all one has to consider.

Thankfully, that's a learning experience without the consequences of a loss. I'm sure Maalik will be seeing that lots in the film room this week.

Beyond the usual explanations for a 4th quarter like fatigue and adjustments, the weather improved slightly about mid-3rd quarter. That was a major factor. This was survive and advance.

The bunny fumble is representative of everything from the minute I entered the stadium. I did like the setup after the game. The Duke team walked inside a fence in the field hockey stadium and had to block all the exiting Duke and Northwestern fans from leaving as they crossed over to their locker room in an adjacent building. The Northwestern fans had to watch some happy Duke fans.

This is the last scheduled game in the series. I'm afraid this may end up like Vanderbilt and Rice where we stop playing each other.

Illinois is on the schedule in 2025 and 2026 so we maintain a BIG10 opponent on the schedule but I agree with you the series with Northwestern could be over.
