There is no reason whatsoever why Duke's program should be lagging behind West Virginia, Western Michigan, Marshall, Pitt, Northwestern, VCU, Louisville, Kentucky (??!!), Central Florida, Syracuse, Hofstra, Penn, Charlotte, Virginia Tech, Oral Roberts, Grand Canyon, Elon and Nebraska-Omaha.
I can understand Clemson -- they've always been pretty good. Stanford? UCLA? Sure -- they could limit recruiting to within 50 miles of their campuses and still field competitive teams. Portland is a traditional power, though up and down. Saint Louis has more soccer history than just about any other place in the country besides NYC. Ohio State's just immense.
But why in the world can't Duke compete with all the others listed above?
I know a lot of soccer parents who've confessed the ultimate goal with all the spending they do on high-level travel soccer. It's not necessarily a scholarship. It's getting a foot in the door at a good school. That's why the Ivies often have competitive teams.
So how in the world are some of these schools either outrecruiting or outcoaching Duke, one of the rare schools that's in the top 10 academically AND offers scholarships?
And has a bit of soccer history ... now long, long ago, but still at least a little bit. There are Duke alumni in influential positions like Garth Lagerwey and Ali Curtis. Jason Kreis and Jay Heaps have coached at MLS level with some modicum of success.
What's the problem?
