Duke Men’s Soccer 2024

George Kiefer is GC’s new head coach

Came over from NC State

My son used to play against their star midfielder, Damon Rouse. I was shocked to see him playing for GC

We held GC to 5 shots. That is excellent. Since the game was not televised,, none of us can opine on the goals that were scored.
Duke had possession for 65% of the match. Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.

They had three shots on goal; all hit the back of the net. The first two GC goals were unassisted and scored by the same player (Bright Nutornutsi). The third one was listed as an own goal. Bad night by the goaltender? Nutornutsi is just a good finisher?

He's an alum near retirement in a very non-revenue sport.
And is a nice guy who is well liked and well connected in the field, with two sons on the team, and who probably made some sacrifices when leaving a successful career at Harvard for Duke when it was at a major transition point to the post-Rennie years.

Nutornutsi from same Ghana HS as Forster Ajago

Bet the house he can finish

Duke leads Averett 4-0 in the first half. Two goals each by Drew Kerr and Ulfur Bjornsson.
Three of the goals were scored in less than a minute. The game is on ACCNX with no commentary and no replays.

Now 12-0 with over 20 minutes to play. Averett is obviously overmatched as a very small Division III private school in Danville, Virginia. Not much competition for Duke but good for confidence and playing time for 2nd and 3rd string players.

Insofar as Farley, there was a cryptic comment made in one of Duke soccer videos by a teammate that leads me to believe he is injured.

Are we sure he is near retirement? Not sure why the standards are lower for “very non-revenue sports”. If getting subsidized by other sports (and I believe men’s soccer gets full alottment of ships), shouldn’t we demand excellence? This isn’t wrestling or men’s swimming which get no scholarship support from school.

He had 1 conference title in 7 years at Harvard. Good, not great. I seriously doubt Duke would have had a hard time finding a coach given how few big time schools even have men’s soccer and Duke’s tradition in the sport. Plus the ACC is the only P4 conference that even sponsors men’s soccer. Very attractive job.

I hope being a nice guy and having 2 sons on the team is not a major factor in determining our coaching candidates. Put another way I really don’t think it is that hard to find a nice guy who has a better track record than 25 years with 1 conference title.

Anyway I hope year 18 is the charm. Final 4 or bust.

Why not? Seriously, why not? Is Duke soccer really all that important that we fans should demand absolute power over the status of the jobs of the coaching staff? Where does it end? If Duke had a cornhole team, would that coach be in jeopardy if his/her teams couldn't do much better than .500?

Yes. I think we should expect three things from our coaches. 1. They build teams full of great people who work hard in the classroom and the field representing the school and themselves well. 2. They treat those student athletes with respect providing a safe environment and them grow as people 3. They regularly challenge for ACC titles.

#3 will be challenging for sports like swimming where are facilities are not up to snuff (we have a 25 meter pool) or wrestling where we don’t put any money into the program.

Otherwise, yes I believe a criterion for evaluating coaches is their win/loss record. I don’t think that is controversial. It should be put into context and 1,2, and 3 should all be factors in evaluating a coach. I acknowledge that if 1 and 2 are outstanding, then that coach should be given some time to make 3 happen, but at some point it needs to happen.

Not trying to be insensitive here. I know lots of human factors to consider

They have one of the top players from NY, Damon Rouse, starting for them......he is controlled by NYCFC; and another defender from a very strong BW Gotschee squad
I have know that kid for years as my son competed against him
