Duke Field Hockey 2024

I didn't see any other place to share this, but Duke field hockey beat the Terps to move to 3-1, with their only loss being to No. 1 Northwestern.

Duke was ranked number five preseason, and its loss is to number one (in a game in which they outshot NU but ran into a red-got GK) while it beat number four. Will be interesting to see the updated rankings.

The exact opposite happened in the Maryland game. Maryland outshot Duke 10-3 but Duke's single shot-on-goal found the mark for a 1-0 win. Duke GK Frederique Wollaert made four saves to give Duke the edge.

#4 Duke concluded their 4-game road swing with a tough loss to #12 Liberty, 1-0.
All four games were against ranked opponents and they went 2-2. Now 4-2 overall.

I'm probably not alone in being mystified by some of the rules and actions in Field Hockey. Here's a handy reference guide provided by the Duke Chronical to help the beginner and occassional viewer. https://www.dukechronicle.com/artic...now-rules-penalties-terminology-season-format

I find the game action difficult to follow at times (on video) with the many play stoppages due to minor penalties such as obstruction or body contact with the ball. With the small ball its also hard to follow much like ice hockey and sometimes the movement of the players is the only way to keep up with the ball location.

#9 Duke (4-3) vs #3 Virginia (7-0) at Jack Katz Stadium - no score after 3 quarters.
Duke has not scored for 148 minutes going into this game - now 193 minutes.
However, they have only let up 4 goals on the season while scoring 11.

Virginia scores on a penalty corner with 9 minutes remaining and wins 1-0. Over three games scoreless for Duke. They were all ranked teams but you have to score to win.
