Best Album of the ‘90s — Winner Takes All

In an Uber on the way to the Children’s hospital. I would say "Wide Open Spaces" by The Chick's. I could listen to Natalie Maines sing the phone book and I would pay for it. "Come on Over" by Shania Twain (not a fan, but HUGE album), "Brand New Man" by Brooks and Dunn and "No Fences" by Garth Brooks have to be here.

Garth has to make at least an Elite 8 or you are all monsters. Absolute monsters. Now I despise Garth, because I hold him responsible for the pop country movement that took over and still predominates (read: ruined) country music. But when this came out, it seemed Garth was going to be the answer to who's going to fill their shoes. Also, go to hell Chris Gaines.
Put me down for Brooks and Dunn (Brand new Man). Loved their music. Ronnie Dunn had a unique (great) voice.

GoDuke!

I didn’t bother the learn the rules of this contest but, to me, the 1990s solidified “Americana” as a genre. Steve Earle completed his “vacation in the ghetto with string of 4 records that imo is unrivaled.

1995 Train a Comin’
1996 I Feel Alright
1997 El Corazon
1999 The Mountain
*followed by the Transcendental Blues in 2000

It’s worth noting that possibly my favorite John Prine record, The Missing Years was released in 1991 and Car Wheels by Lucinda was released in 1998

Lyle Lovett released:
Joshua Judges Ruth 1992
I Love Everybody 1994
The Road to Ensenada 1996
Step Inside this House 1998

For Historical Significance:

Uncle Tupelo:

No Depression 1990
Still Feel Gone 1991
March 16-20 1992
Anodyne 1993

Wilco
AM 1995
Being There 1996

Whiskey town:
Faithless Street 1995

Dwight Yoakum had himself quite a moment in the 1990s. While Nick of Time was released in 1989, Bonnie Rait’s Luck of the Draw and Longing in their Hearts Followed in 1991 and 1994 respectively

And my personal favorite, Patty Griffin, released a Stripped down demo titled Living with Ghosts in 1996 followed a stone cold rocker titled Flaming Red in 1998 ( with Silver Bell recorded in between but not released until 2013

I know John Prine, Bonnie Rait and love Deight Yoakum, but I love just how unaware of the others I am. I find this to be pretty interesting.

Anodyne is my favorite on your list, but Lucinda W's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road might well have been the best Americana album of the decade. If 2000 is included, then J. Hyatt's Crossing Muddy Waters would also be in contention for me.

Moonpie nailed it with Cracked Rear View (Hootie).

I’ll also add Human Touch (The Boss), Come on Over (Shania), Everywhere We Go (Chesney) and Our Time in Eden (10k Maniacs).

Don’t sleep on anything by Alanis Morissette or Natalie Merchant.

Speaking of us late boomers...

Turns out Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints was a 1990 release. So count that as my album of the 90's (as of today).

I saw this concert at the Dean Dome, and it was probably the most fun I've had at a concert ever.

Among albums I haven't seen listed (though I haven't read every post):

Tori Amos - Under the Pink
Cake - Fashion Nugget
Belly - Star or King
Beck - Odelay
Temple of the Dog - TOTD
Ben Folds Five - The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
John Hiatt - Perfectly Good Guitar
Shawn Colvin - Fat City
Paul Simon - The Rhythm of the Saints (okay, it was just mentioned, but I had it in mind)
Rush - Test for Echo
Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros - Rock Art and the X-Ray Style
Peter Gabriel - Us
Daniel Lanois - For the Beauty of Wynona
Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got

Temple of the Dog - TOTD
I *think* you are the first person to mention Temple of the Dog. I thought about including it in my original list, but left it off under the theory that while I loved it when it came out, I loved some of the albums released in the next few years even more (Ten, Nevermind come straight to mind). But it is definitely a worthy inclusion.

Contest Update

Let’s wrap up the nomination window tomorrow. If anyone wants to throw favorite albums into the hat, the time is now!

Techy folks, is there a way to pull all of the text from a thread? I am wondering what the most efficient way is to pull together a list of the nominations from the thread.

Next Steps - Play In Tournament?

Since we are doing this international football style, we may need to have some qualifying tourneys to winnow the field down to 32 albums. My first thought is that once we have a complete list of nominations, we will need to sort the nominations in “regions” where we can have some preliminary action prior to the main event.

As someone astutely pointed out upthread, this contest is well positioned for the offseason.

Let’s wrap up the nomination window tomorrow. If anyone wants to throw favorite albums into the hat, the time is now!

Thanks for indicating a deadline. Here are 6 albums not yet mentioned.

Baduizm - Erykah Badu
Gran Turismo - The Cardigans
Ill Communication - Beastie Boys
Love Deluxe - Sade
The Predator - Ice Cube
Vitalogy - Pearl Jam

Yes, there's a third party candidate in the Pearl Jam album debate. I don't think Vitalogy exists without Ten, so it's less influential, but maybe a better overall work?

You may want to consider a One Album Per Artist/Group rule, and use the Play-In tournament, in part, for that reason.

My favorites, of those mentioned by others so far:

Automatic for the People - R.E.M.
Dummy - Portishead
Garbage - Garbage
Grace - Jeff Buckley
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - Lauryn Hill
No Fences - Garth Brooks
The Score - Fugees
Wide Open Spaces - The Chicks

Thanks. I suggested Blues Traveler - the album name is Four - I wasn't totally sure when I posted to suggest it. Not a likely contender for the top of the list but definitely worth mentioning.

Sorted by Artist/Album as all music collections should be. Three artists listed at the bottom were mentioned but no album offered. Going over the list I own a surprising amount of them. This list is at 150 albums

The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest
I would like to second Low End Theory and add Midnight Marauders - two ATCQ albums that changed my life.

Also AIC’s “Dirt” which has already been mentioned.

I’m a huge Rush fan as well so it’s funny to me that someone already mentioned Test For Echo. I think that’s one of their worst albums - I’d go with Counterparts over that for that decade.

Maybe not mentioned here that i also spun heavily as 90’s albums-

Living Colour - Time’s Up (Vivid came out in ‘88)

Fishbone - The Reality of My Surroundings

Megadeth - Rust in Peace (best metal album ever released)

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Flight of the Cosmic Hippo

King Crimson - Thrak

Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun

Jeff Beck - Who Else?

Tool - Ænima

Melvins - Stag

Public Enemy - Apocalypse 91

Full list deleted
I don’t see it on the list, but I am pretty sure that someone already nominated my personal favorite, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams.

Three others which would make my personal list but haven’t been mentioned

Wrecking Ball - Emmylou Harris
Tomorrow the Green Grass - The Jayhawks
Trailer Park - Beth Orton

Anodyne is my favorite on your list, but Lucinda W's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road might well have been the best Americana album of the decade. If 2000 is included, then J. Hyatt's Crossing Muddy Waters would also be in contention for me.
I was pivoting to Americana, as we had settled in the Philly burbs and had tripped over 88.5, wxpn.org. Other singer/songwriters of mine, in addition to those mentioned upstream, include:
Indigo Girls "Nomads Indians Saints"
Mary Chapin Carpenter "Come On Come On"
"Joshua Judges Ruth"
Johnny Cash "Unchained" and whichever else of the American Recordings were released in the 90's
John Gorka "Out of the Valley"
Nanci Griffih "Other Voices, Other Rooms"
John Prine "Missing Years" / "Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings"
Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers "American Babylon"
I never made up my mind about Beck and Ben Folds, among others....

Of note - Ten (Pearl Jam) was the most nominated or mentioned. That is the darkest album I own. It's REALLY DARK. Like REALLY REALLY DARK.
Was riding with my sister(a bit more than a year older than me) in a car a few years ago while visiting Phoenix, AZ. Turned the radio to 98 KUPD, which was still playing much of the same music(metal) that it was when I lived there in the late 80s. My sister asked me, "Are you still angry?" I chuckled because the music did not resonate with me like it had back then. I still knew it, but it didn't have the same punch. I have Ten on CD but haven't listened to it in years.
