A couple of uncomfortable items to consider: K2's Shooting, Diaz's Status

Timing and intent are not without significance when gauging fan reactions. The fact that the original message identifying "concerns" relating to Duke basketball and football was posted while Blue Devil fans were still enjoying the celebration of an adrenaline-rush comeback victory on the football field could be regarded as suspect timing. Compound that with the poster's acknowledgement that the message was deliberately intended "to put some coal in DBR stockings" and it should come as no great surprise that other members of the DBR community might consider the "downer" unwelcome.
I wouldn't say I find it unwelcome. People can feel however they want to. Like I feel like making fun of it. That's how I feel.

On the ACC Huddle postgame panel this morning, former Miami head coach Mark Richt said that he and Manny Diaz are old friends, and that based on their conversations he believes Manny is really happy at Duke, that he loves the place, loves the people there, and has the kind of players he loves to coach. Sounds encouraging.
it does, and making four or five million coaching at Duke vs the seven million Elmo is making at A&M seems like a bargain for him.

Two issues which are uncomfortable but need to be considered:

K2 has shot 4-24 vs Ky, Az and KU. In buy games with far lesser athletes he has shot 13-24. Given that 3 of his makes vs legit teams were against maybe not so good Az(3-4) he is 1-18 vs ranked teams with good athletes. Absolutely a small sample size, but this is a potential concern about being able to hit shots against better athletes. Still hoping that this is just random cold shooting and that all the summer praise will prove accurate, hopefully starting this week vs Auburn.

If Manny Diaz gets an offer from one of the P2 schools he would take the money and run.

I hope neither of the above come to pass, but just wanted to put some coal in DBR stockings early and beat the Christmas rush.
Maybe, maybe not...

Kons recent shooting dips could just be home vs away.
Need a larger sample size. I think we will have a better indication after Auburn.

As for Manny. He's been on the top of the heap and then in a supporting roll at several Apex Predator type FB programs. He knows how the sausage is made and exactly what's in it. You could be right. Or Manny may be content here and now. The pressure is Different at Duke as compared to the other Apex level coaching jobs and he knows he can win here. That's not nothing. Is it enough, time will tell.

Perhaps, just perhaps, Elko and Diaz have proven that Duke IS a place where football can win consistently and doesn’t have to be a place where coaches prove themselves and move on. We were pretty close to an 11-1 season this year. I know, e we were also close to a 5-7 season.

The point is, I can see us contending for an ACC title and not automatically losing our coach due to success.

I know we’ve discussed it a million times on here but I think what will keep us as a stepping stone program are the stadium and attendance situations. It’s a terrible look to have half the seats empty on a regular basis, it makes it harder to recruit, and it just does not convey “big time.”

Other private schools have the same problem -- not ND, but there are a lot of empty seats in Miami.
I think if Duke were to become a popular program, the result might be 40% more in attendance and 1000% more at tail gates!

Isn't that what Elko was saying until last December?

I don't whether Elko was saying that to old friends in private conversations, but it was never any secret that Elko's dream school was TAMU. If Manny harbors a desire to coach at another program, I haven't heard any mention of it.
Some of you may remember that Eddie Sutton left Arkansas for Kentucky - a “dream job.” That one didn’t turn out so well. In an interview several years later, Sutton said that he already had his dream job at Arkansas but didn’t realize it at the time. Hindsight is 20-20. Hopefully, Duke is Diaz’s dream job and he doesn’t have to learn that in retrospect as Sutton did with Arkansas.

Exactly. It was a stroke of bad luck for Duke that the A&M job opened up so early in Elko's tenure. I know most of us expected him to leave eventually, but I do not buy into the notion that he was going to leave Duke as soon as any larger P5 school came calling. FWIW, I have it on good authority that while Elko was absolutely Michigan State's first choice, he never really engaged with them.

Come on, that's weak sauce.

3. Nina is also leaving soon.
4. Kara is leaving.
5. Maalik is transferring.
6. Jon is leaving.

You can do better.
Hmmm....do better you say?.....Well thats' kind of an analogy fail there IMO....I'm sure if Pokerseq had any notion that 3 thru 6 was a possibility....of his two worries, I am not at all worried about Kon for the season.....but I figure Manny is almost 50-50 outta here. The WF comparison is not perfect, but don't you know Clawson wishes he had abandoned the small school ship a few years ago? And the advantages for the bigs has only increased since then.....now to that list
3. Not likely.....not widely credited nationwide with the Scheyer hire (K did that) and can she keep a good FB coach? We'll see.
4. Not even the same universe of interest, money, totally different dynamics
5. Could be but easier to replace than Manny
6. Duke BB is a royalty job, FB is not....

Just sayin...

The one thing that is in our favor with Manny is he already was HC at Miami, the ultimate big in the ACC and Manny's dream job. And he knows how that turned out. So I think he may have a different perspective than some coaches based on that experience...that Duke is a pretty good place to be and the "football power schools" have some downsides.

I don't disagree with your points as to why he might stay for a while. I also think it's fair to point out that the spread in pay and prestige is only getting wider between the big schools and the smaller schools....between the SEC/Big Ten and the rest of the world......

I feel like we have the same exact conversation in each of these threads. Not everyone is driven by pay and "prestige." There is a greater than zero chance that Manny is driven by this and is open to other options. But there is also a decent chance that he is happy with the millions Duke is paying him (plus all the money he made in previous gigs) and the lower stress level at Duke, particularly since he has seen the other side and has been chewed up and spit out by the other side. We shall see.

I personally admire people like Bob Hurley Sr. who could have had major college head coaching jobs that would have greatly increased his salary but chose to stay at St. Anthony's for his career. Others always seek out bigger challenges, which is also cool. Different strokes for different folks.

Manny is a Miami and Penn State guy. Which category do you REALLY believe he is in? Bob Hurley Sr? Or Deion Sanders? Or how about something in the middle...say Cignetti or Drinkwitz?

Not immediately, but I think it’s Florida State that will come calling and will be tough for him to resist.
