A couple of uncomfortable items to consider: K2's Shooting, Diaz's Status

Two issues which are uncomfortable but need to be considered:

K2 has shot 4-24 vs Ky, Az and KU. In buy games with far lesser athletes he has shot 13-24. Given that 3 of his makes vs legit teams were against maybe not so good Az(3-4) he is 1-18 vs ranked teams with good athletes. Absolutely a small sample size, but this is a potential concern about being able to hit shots against better athletes. Still hoping that this is just random cold shooting and that all the summer praise will prove accurate, hopefully starting this week vs Auburn.

If Manny Diaz gets an offer from one of the P2 schools he would take the money and run. While Duke does not have to disclose his salary, the estimate of 4M would likely result in aguaranteed increase of at least 50% for 5-7 years. He has shown a willingness to leave quickly for greener grass (see his 17 day tenure as Temple HC), and his stock likely is on a bubble given an unsustainable record in close games this year. For only the second time in my life I will be rooting for Texas tonight so that Manny's first year will resut in more wins than Midnight Mike at A$M (to be clear I said before Elko left that the should do so, it was his failure to wait a few hours to tell the players who literally sweated and bled to get him the job that he was leaving). I hope Manny sticks around, but other schools can/will offer financial benefits both to him personally and in NIL that Duke cannot match. Consensus among talking heads is that fewer good HC jobs will open this year because of costs related to the House settlement (Mack "only" costs 2.8M so CHeats could cheaply pull the trigger).

I hope neither of the above come to pass, but just wanted to put some coal in DBR stockings early and beat the Christmas rush.

Well aren’t you a bundle of joy?! While you’re at it why not give us all paper cuts and pour lemon juice on them😜

Someone else noted that in the 2 losses to Arizona and Kansas, both games were played in "big" arenas... whereas all wins were either Cameron or at Arizona, while larger than Cameron, is more of a college-level court. And those "big" arenas with different sight lines may have been a bit of newness for K2. Good experience. I think next such arena is MSG... Note also that K2 was 3-4 on 3-pointers against Seattle in Cameron... oops... but "lesser" power team... FWIW

Kon & Cooper are both examples of our own unrealistic expectations leading ultimately to disappointment. They are freshmen. Coop is not Bird. Kon is not Luka. In the words of the late Donald Rumsfeld: "You go into combat with the army you have, not the army you wish you had."

So True. Cooper may become Bird and Kon may become Luka but they will not do that in a Duke uniform as mere freshmen. The greatest freshmen are rarely good as the experienced seniors of much lesser talent. Zion was an exception.

That Kon’s better performance was against lesser athletes is one explanation for what the stats are showing us. Another explanation is that Kon shot poorly against the 3 best coached teams we have faced. The issue could be athletic, or it could be schematic. In the Kansas game, we adjusted and used him not as a shooter but as an assist guy — “if you are never going to go under the screen, we can make you pay for that”.

The stats are clear, but I think the interpretation is not yet.

What if Scheyer leaves too? The Sixers are a disaster, they could offer Jon a bag to coach Jared McCain again.

And I mean, how much do we really know about how earthquake-proof CIS is? A small but unfortunately placed quake could bring the whole thing down.

Not to make light of either point made by the OP, but if we need lumps of coal around here let’s make some LUMPS of coal. This month has been a long few years.

Come on, that's weak sauce.

3. Nina is also leaving soon.
4. Kara is leaving.
5. Maalik is transferring.
6. Jon is leaving.

You can do better.
