2025 Men's Basketball Recruiting

I'm not so sure Foster will be leaving unless he has a huge year.

You can hear in his Podcast how much he loves Duke. If he is the sole point guard next year, there could be good NIL money in it for him and he will showcase his talents.

A guy can dream can't he?
Duke has had a former 5-star guard return each of the past 5 years (Moore in '21 and '22, Roach in '23 and '24, and now Foster in '25). It would continue a trend.

I agree that Foster seems like a guy that would like to stay if it makes sense. In fact, I think the chances are better than 50%. Of course I would be thrilled for both him and the team if he plays his way into the first half of the draft…

I think there's a decent chance that it's Foster that plays himself into a first round pick in which case it might be Proctor who returns for another year and another nice NIL pay day. I would bet we get at least one of them back for another year running the point...

Either Foster or Proctor could play themselves into a first round pick, but neither is currently projected to get there, nor even early in the second round. I wouldn't be surprised (or disappointed) if both have solid, but unspectacular campaigns (think: fringe All-ACC, like Roach's or Grayson Allen's junior years), are projected to go no higher than the mid-second, and face the legitimate question whether any option beats returning to Duke.

In that case, I don't think it's crazy to think that either or both would return another year. It's not 2018 anymore - it's much easier now to see the advantages of staying.

While it is undoubtedly possible for Caleb to play himself into a first-round pick, it should be noted that he has further to go than Tyrese to get there. Caleb is worse than Tyrese, aside from 3pt shooting and drawing fouls. I expect big things from Caleb and Tyrese this year.

I agree that Duke will probably get one of them back for next season.

I agree, generally, and I think the main reason you might see Caleb projected higher than Tyrese (at this point) is uncertainty. Tyrese has had two seasons with the ball in his hands a lot, and hasn't done enough to warrant NBA attention. Caleb has had one injury-shortened season as a fourth guard, was less productive than Tyrese but flashed some potential, and thus could be seen to have more upside that might reveal itself this year. But I know you'll have to see it to believe it's there, and I'm with you.

I agree with most of this. My only quibble is: Did Tyrese really have the ball in his hands a lot? He was fourth in usage as a freshman and fifth as a sophomore. He was Duke's PG for much of the time, but Duke has used multiple players to initiate the offense for years now. I think Tyrese will look much better (not that he looked bad prior) with multiple lob threats on offense. I think people forget that Tyrese played around an ankle injury, a concussion, and no lob threats (Sean could have been one if he had seen the court).

05. Koa Peat (6-8 PF): Duke offer, AND 10 finalists are Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Duke, Houston, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas, UCLA, and UNC

Past and future visits to Durham:

Koa Peat (official September 24)

According to Travis Branham, Koa Peat has pushed his Duke visit to October 18.

Before that visit, Peat is among the high schoolers invited to attend a minicamp for the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team. Branham has a list:

Also invited are Duke 2025 recruiting targets Nate Ament, Brayden Burries, Jalen Haralson, Shelton Henderson, and Nikolas Khamenia, as well as 2026 players Brandon McCoy Jr and Jordan Smith Jr, who each have a Duke offer.

I am irrationally assuming this is a good sign for Duke and the Boozer twins.

I agree. I see Tyrese as an NBA player on defense and physical attributes. His somewhat anemic offensive output may reflect the presence of Jared and Jeremy -- I look for more offense thus year.

ACC member SMU just got its first recruit of the 2025 class... and he has a familiar name.

Jermaine O'Neal Jr (son of the former NBA player) has committed to the Mustangs. JONJr is a 4-star 6-5 SF who had offers from Arkansas, Tennessee, Mizzu, Vandy, Az St, and a slew of other P5 programs. He's ranked in the top 150 or so in the class.

Now, you are probably thinking, "Yeah, ok Jason. Doesn't seem like that big a deal. Kid could be a good player someday, but doubtful he is much of an immediate impact on the ACC."

Ahh, but here is why it does matter. JONJr is AAU teammates with big man Jaden Toombs. Toombs is ranked in the top 50 in the class and would be a big deal for a program like SMU. He's 6-10, 245 and the #7 center in the class. He has a visit to SMU this weekend and says he will make his final decision in about a week.

Your response may be, "But Jason, being AAU teammates doesn't really mean all that much in terms of following each other. The vast majority of AAU teammates end up going to different schools."

And to that I will note... Jaden Toombs has lived with the O'Neel family since he was in 8th grade. He and JONJr are practically brothers at this point. I suspect SMU is right now very much in the driver's seat for an impact freshman in the class of 2025.

09. Jalen Haralson (6-6 SF): Duke offer, AND 9 finalists are Auburn, Duke, Gonzaga, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan State, Missouri, Notre Dame, and Purdue

Past and future visits to Durham:

Jalen Haralson (not yet scheduled)

It's looking like there will be no visit to Durham. Jamie Shaw of On3 says Jalen Haralson is narrowing his list of finalists, showing 4 schools in the image below (Auburn, Indiana, Michigan State, Notre Dame) and suggesting that it's really between two of them.

That information is behind a paywall, but someone on the Hoosier Sports Forum says the decision is down to Indiana or Notre Dame. If that's true, Haralson -- who attends La Lumiere in the town of Anderson, just outside of Indianapolis -- will be staying in state.

In other news, Chance Mallory, a 5-9 point guard from Charlottesville ranked #64 by RSCI, also went local, committing today to UVA.

If you're wondering, here are the top recruits who plan to be in the ACC next year. I'll list both RSCI (which has a top 100) and the On3 industry composite rankings (which names 274 players).

Sadiq White Jr (6-8 PF) to Syracuse -- #20 RSCI, #24 On3
Akai Fleming (6-4 SG) to Georgia Tech -- #58 RSCI, #59 On3
Chance Mallory (5-9 PG) to Virginia -- #64 RSCI, #53 On3
Alier Maluk (6-10 C) to Florida State -- #79 RSCI, unranked by On3
Jovani Ruff (6-5 SG) to California -- #91 RSCI, #105 On3

Jermaine O'Neal Jr (6-5 SF) to SMU -- #99 On3
Matthew Able (6-4 SG) to Miami -- #103 On3
Zac Foster (6-3 SG) to Clemson -- #122 On3
Akbar Waheed (6-6 SG) to Boston College -- #127 On3
RJ Greer (6-4 SG) to NC State -- #131 On3
Brandon Stores (6-4 SG) to Georgia Tech -- #138 On3
Christian Gurdak (6-9 C) to Virginia Tech -- #154 On3
Semetri Carr (6-0 CG) to California -- #157 On3
Caleb Steger (6-3 SG) to Boston College -- #182 On3
Dwayne Wimbley Jr (6-5 SF) to Florida State -- #189 On3
Jack Bailey (6-10 C) to Boston College -- #194 On3
Trent Steinour (6-9 PF) to Clemson -- #200 On3
Omari Witherspoon (6-4 SG) to Pittsburgh -- #216 On3
Isaac Carr (6-3 CG) to Wake Forest -- #233 On3
Cole Kirouac (6-9 C) to Georgia Tech -- #235 On3

I don't normally follow recruiting in the Sun Belt Conference -- though maybe I should, as Duke just played a bowl game against Troy and an NCAA Tournament game against James Madison. Anyway, Texas State gets both a player and a Gen X pop culture reference.

I remember Chandler Bing looking much different in a basketball jersey:

Coincidence? "Hey, that's 'jo-incidence' with a C."

LOL. Who does that to their child? In this day and age, even if you don't know who Chandler Bing is, you google your potential name choice for your child to make sure it isn't the name of a serial killer or TV star that you don't know. Also, Pace is a top ATL prep school (alma mater of Wendell Carter) - I'm guessing he is the first kid from there to go to Texas State.

SMU is going to toss out money like doughnuts on a Saturday morning. Will be interesting.

So you’re saying I should check before making my stage name “Joe Stalin?”

I know of a couple who named their son Bart Simpson, after the show was already famous!

41. London Jemison (6-7 PF): 3 finalists are Alabama, Kansas, and Louisville

London Jemison is declaring his collegiate destination today at 3:30pm ET. That's a half hour before the Duke football game starts, but keep in mind these live announcements get delayed, and then the coach and principal each make long introductions before the player gets to speak.

Or you can take Trilly Donovan's word for it. He's picking NIL giant Alabama over NIL giant Kansas and NIL giant Louisville. Roll Tide detergent!

The TV show "Friends" turns 30 years old this week, and it ran for 10 seasons, so I'm guessing Mr. and Mrs. Bing named their child about 2 or 3 years after the finale. The family recently spoke on the subject.

MRS. BING: We didn't really watch much of that show. We saw one episode where the TV Guide subscription was in the name of Chanandler Bong.

MR. BING: Actually, it's MISS Chanandler Bong.

CHANDLER: What's a TV Guide?

AJ Dybansta was in Chapel Hill this weekend. And in other news, the NCAA just granted Armando Bacot a 9th year of eligibility since UNC failed to find a center in the portal this summer...
