I have most assuredly heard from people who say Duke's reputation as a school that produces a ton of high draft picks who succeed in the league (and the genuine camaraderie of The Brotherhood) helps us immensely when recruiting the tippy top recruits. Cooper Flagg, who knows he is going to be making $8+ mil in a year (the 4th pick in next year's draft will start at a salary of $8.34 mil) is not looking for the program that is going to pay him $200-grand more than someone else. He's looking for the program that will get him as ready as possible to be the #1 overall pick in the draft. It makes sense. The overall trend is not great for us IMO.
I don't think Flagg or Maluach or Evans or K2 are at Duke because we offered the biggest and best NIL package. As the agents have more influence and multiple offers get lined up side by side in the springtime, it seems like Duke will be under more pressure to at least match the $ offers of other schools, diminishing the value of our other advantages in recruiting.
I'm sure we will still get our share of top recruits and transfers, but we have to also stay competitive with our overall NIL budget to keep pace.
I need to do some digging on Duke player salaries now... I have an idea.
