2024 U.S. Presidential election

It's too bad the mics aren't muted because I expect Vance to very aggressive - interrupting and badgering him.
I personally think that about the only things Walz really needs to do in this debate is be himself and not be out-muscled. Vance's slick lies will be evident to any observer that's even vaguely neutral, but the one thing that can't happen is for Vance to dominate the air time the way Trump did in the presidential debate. Walz was supposed to add strength to the ticket, and he needs to show that here, IMO. Everything else is gravy.

Meanwhile, Israel really has invaded Lebanon. The news is politely call it an "incursion". According to Al Jazeera, Hamas is denying that it's happening, but it's being reported by nearly every other major news source.

I also expect Walz to struggle. I don’t think it matters a ton (because it is the Veep debate), but unlike the top of the ticket I think the GOP has the edge in the Veep debate. Especially since the mics won’t be muted and they won’t live fact-check.
Cowardly of the media to announce they are backing down on any live fact-checking after the pseudo-outrage that ABC had the nerve to fact check Trump on a couple of outlandish lies that they could see coming.

A bit of disagreement here..I suspect Walz's avuncular persona will prevail over Vance's over the top fearmongering, but we'll see.

I just hope the moderators do their job. Just because the mics aren’t muted does not allow one person to talk over the other person constantly. I also hope both candidates are pushed to actually answer the questions. The last debate was all scripted responses that often had nothing to do with the questions - both candidates were guilty of that.

If I recall, the mics will not be naturally muted but the moderators will have the ability to mute as necessary. Which will of course lead to lots of angst and conspiracy theories.

It will be interesting to see how general vs. specific the mods are - will they say "you said this" or will it be more "what is your take on this issue?"

Since the target is the average American, I think Walz should repeatedly focus on which ticket has multiple Ivy League degrees and made their fortunes on the backs of average Americans. And ask why, if they are so focused on helping people who are down on their luck, almost every ad by Republicans is about transgender? Who cares? Is having harsher laws on that going to put food on your table?

Vance will struggle to stick with Trump's version of the "truth".
We’re likely to hear plenty of lies about the law enforcement response to the post-George Floyd disturbances in the Twin Cities. We got a preview when Trump claimed it was he, and not Walz, who mobilized the National Guard.

I am convinced that whomever those undecided voters are, they are not likely to be watching tonight. I have no clue what they are waiting for to make up their minds but I doubt it's which VP candidate is more clever with his one liners.
I'm waiting to see which candidate says, "Go to **** Carolina"...or agrees to make their first executive order making either standard or daylight savings time permanent so we have no more time switching. Either one will do it.

So. What are peoples expectations of the debate tomorrow? I have to admit that my expectations for Walz are low. As the D VP nominee Walz has done only around 10 interviews whereas JD has done over a 100. I also heard that Walz had told Harris that he was not a good debater. I think JD is a savy liar and is really good at misdirecting attacks. Walz may struggle. CNN is reporting that the rumor is that Walz Is fighting his nerves.
How many of JD's interviews have went well, objectively?

I see now why Vance was chosen. Here is a 30-minute speech he gave in November 2021. In the 1st minute he says we have to "aggressively attack the universities in this country". So if you can stomach the rest of the speech (I couldn't), let us know what other wisdom he imparts. I did watch the last 2 minutes to see how he would put a bow on the speech. He didn't disappoint, he quotes "the great prophet and statesman Richard Milhouse Nixon" who said "The professors are the enemy.".

Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you the Republican nominee for the Vice Presidency of the United States of America.

When I hear politicians talking about going after universities, I laugh. First off, they don't mean universities, they mean universities with large endowments. That's not most of them. What they really want to do is attack Harvard. Right. Like that's a good idea. Harvard could tank our economy whenever they want to, their endowment is over $50 billion. When we say "too big to fail", what we really mean is "too big to let fail". Harvard is actually too big to fail.

When someone that has done 100+ interviews it stands to reason they are more practiced at keeping a straight face while lying than someone that has only done about 10. I have seen a couple of JDs but my only experience of Walz was his joint interview with Harris. During that interview he was asked about the criticism of his military record. Imho he didn’t give a great answer and seemed very nervous.

Is the dockworkers strike the October Surprise that hands Trump victory? At the heart of the strike is the fact that automation has taken over many of the jobs formerly done by humans. Fewer dockworkers are necessary.

It certainly could be. If it's not resolved quickly, I could see it dragging on for months. If it drags on for months, the economy won't recover quickly either. Not the place for speculation on this issue, but I do wonder what happens if Trump is handed an economy in freefall.
