2024 Football Portal News

This was my point earlier. I think some of this money dries up. The idea behind NIL is that players can monetize their NIL for things like jerseys, video games, and also as celebrities to help companies market. I.e a return on investment no different than Nespresso thinks it gets from Clooney or Cap One from Sam Jackson. That it is being used as just straight pay to play seems like a massive waste of money. But I’m all for the kids getting those bags. I’m not contributing to NIL unless Irs helping me make $$$ too and I don’t think my chosen occupation benefits from Quinn Evers selling my brand. At least I hope not. My school donations go elsewhere.

This latest thing with the BYU basketball recruit is insane. $7m for what exactly?
They are paying him for a lot more than 6 months of basketball. They are paying him to be affiliated with BYU basketball forever. Did a Davidson tour with my son a couple of years ago and the tour guide mentioned Steph at least 5 times.

I have to say I don’t understand the NIL Donor economics or how he/she is made whole. As NIL Doner, you’re watching a game with the other fans who aren’t NIL donors. They bought a ticket or a cable subscription, and you bought a player for everyone to watch. The players make out well, the program rakes in the conference payout and you get?? There’s a reason NIL donors don’t exist in real pro sports. It makes no sense. But the rest of us are entertained!
They aren't really made whole, which is why this is going to dry up in my opinion. I think right now there is the "new fantasy GM of my own real college team" smell to it. These donors actually get to play de facto GM or fantasy GM in a real way. A few KC Concepcion / Jordan Waters bombs (hello Pack) and this is gonna go away for a lot of folks.

It's also gonna dawn on folks that there is nothing anyone in the country can do that the massive fan bases in the SEC can't do more and better and larger, period. Size matters. I remember laughing at the NC State group's statements over a year ago...,knowing that dude, whatever you can do, Bama and Tennessee and Penn State and Michigan can do 10 fold.....but knock yourself out.

What does Mensah do that is so much better than Murphy?
He is a far more accurate passer on short and medium length routes, especially timing plays. He does not have nearly the booming arm that Murphy did for the long bombs. Mensah is also a far more capable rusher and able to avoid the sack when the OLine gets swamped.

Mensah had a vastly higher yard per attempt average, a significantly better completion rate, and threw half as many interceptions.

Aside from throwing bombs, it does not appear there is anything Murphy does better than Mensah. There is little question Duke traded up at the QB position with this move.

After watching some film of Mensah at Tulane, the most obvious difference from Murphy is that Mensah realizes that short passes should not be thrown at hyper-speed.

A great point. A QB with touch isn't a bad thing. Those down and out routes need to be accurate not trying to beat the radar gun. As for running the football, what good is the option if the QB never keeps the ball. That allows the defense to key on the RB every time the option is run.
Someone mentioned receivers. I saw a wide receiver from Wake Forest, Fields was mentioned up thread. Has he entered the portal? If so, I have missed that.

GoDuke!

Horatio Fields has indeed entered the portal, and another thread on this board includes comments suggesting Manny has nabbed him, but I cannot find anything at all to corroborate that.

Cal Berkley’s quarterback is leaving. Story is identical to Leonard’s. A two star recruit with only 1 offer to Yale. Cal offers and he goes there. Has a really good season. Writes a wonderful goodbye letter to Cal fans. Now off to the best paycheck. He is from Miami area so maybe Miami is after him. Fans on twitter remind him he can get to NFL from Cal as Jared Goff is their latest example. Maybe just old fashioned but why doesn’t he feel loyalty to the school that took a chance on him. Sure Tulane fans feel the same way about Mensah. Not knocking Manny or Duke as you have to use the rules the way everyone else does to succeed in this environment. Manny was hired like every coach to win games. And like every coach if he doesn’t win he and his entire staff get fired. Still wish the NCAA had used better sense to find a way to pay players without what we’re seeing now.

Am I the only one who thinks the players are doing the right thing?

Very, very few of them are going to be pro football players. So, they have a 4 year career, after which the money ends. There is no time to wait, or be loyal. You can’t afford to waste a single year.

I have real trouble believing we would act differently if we were in their situation.
