2024 Football Portal News

Yes, big payouts don't necessarily mean big NIL commitments. See: Michigan 2021-2024. They were losing recruits and roster players in both football and basketball to schools willing to pay out more NIL bucks. They looked to their boosters and got more money, which is how they were able to flip Bryce Underwood, the #1 football recruit in the country.

On the flip side, how do we think SMU got good quickly? They aren't getting any conference payouts from the ACC, but their NIL budget shot through the roof. It's two pots, and there doesn't have to be any correlation between them.
long term there will indeed be correlation....guarantee it.....GURANTEE IT. What cannot happen, will not happen.....and no way schools can go under water long term 80 mill a year on tickets / conference pay outs and stay competitive. Maybe an oil rich alumni can for a short period of time (SMU) - but it cannot sustain.

I'm interested -- but not enough to research it myself -- in learning if the people who said they were done with college football last year stuck to their resolution, or came crawling back.
This would be an interesting topic for a separate thread, about football, basketball and other sports.

In that thread, I would take issue with the generalization "came crawling back", because while some people did make splashy pronouncements that would make that characterization accurate, plenty of others decided to leave or thought about leaving in ways where coming back is merely changing their minds.

I stand by my original statement. It was clearly directed at the people who made those "splashy pronouncements", and no one else. It's curious that it's getting some pushback from people who aren't done with college football at all, or who quietly stepped away and may have changed their minds. I mean, okay, I guess it's nice to share.

The way I would describe it is, despite everything that is being done to kill the sport, it still manages to be fun.

Yeah, that could obviously happen. And in that case, whoever paid the original NIL money is made whole. In a market, it shouldn't matter whether the player himself pays the money back or whoever is funding his next NIL contract pays the money back. Whoever funded the original NIL contract is made whole either way.
I have to say I don’t understand the NIL Donor economics or how he/she is made whole. As NIL Doner, you’re watching a game with the other fans who aren’t NIL donors. They bought a ticket or a cable subscription, and you bought a player for everyone to watch. The players make out well, the program rakes in the conference payout and you get?? There’s a reason NIL donors don’t exist in real pro sports. It makes no sense. But the rest of us are entertained!

This was my point earlier. I think some of this money dries up. The idea behind NIL is that players can monetize their NIL for things like jerseys, video games, and also as celebrities to help companies market. I.e a return on investment no different than Nespresso thinks it gets from Clooney or Cap One from Sam Jackson. That it is being used as just straight pay to play seems like a massive waste of money. But I’m all for the kids getting those bags. I’m not contributing to NIL unless Irs helping me make $$$ too and I don’t think my chosen occupation benefits from Quinn Evers selling my brand. At least I hope not. My school donations go elsewhere.

This latest thing with the BYU basketball recruit is insane. $7m for what exactly?

I guess it's fair to post info from the board at Devils Den (not proprietary info from the site). Father of one of the players who has established considerable credibility these past years says Murphy was told Duke would be looking for a QB1 in the portal that fits the offensive scheme Duke wants to run better. Murphy was told he could stay, but one can see why he wouldn't want to. This is kind of what I figured, it's the new world....best of luck to everyone...if you knew about Brewer's offense at SMU and watched Duke play this year, you could see things were a bit mismatched, but they worked out well.....
I wonder if this is why Murphy started running at least a little bit in the final game or two...but perhaps too little too late.
