This isn't particularly surprising, given that the virus apparently has a much longer incubation period than other respiratory viruses and also the fact that we had no way of identifying it until just recently. Right now there is so much respiratory illness going around and so many circulating respiratory viruses that it would be easy for this coronavirus to "hide" in the crowd.
The difference being the larger number of really sick patients, I guess, although in the time that SARS-CoV-2 has managed to kill two Americans on American soil, there have been a couple of hundred deaths from influenza; so again, without testing, it would be hard to tell exactly what is going on.
