Watching march madness in Europe

I've been getting certified in cybersecurity and been interested in these subjects and I will say that be careful about free vpns into your research because if it's free there's a reason it's free. Proton is solid though. But do your research. One month of VPN is not expensive.

Words to live by! It's why I did mine directly to my own router. (Non-trivial setup, though)

In response to the above mentions of ESPN...

ESPN has international TV rights to the NCAA Tournament, so when it had its own subscription streaming app internationally (the aforementioned defunct ESPN Player) you could watch every tourney game there. Now that it's gone, they sell TV rights country by country (if at all), so in the UK they've sold the rights to Sky Sports, who airs ESPN's international feed, which has ESPN announcers (ever wanted to hear Dickie V call a Duke game at the Final Four?) and graphics.

So it's worth looking into whether or not the country you'll be in during the tournament has the games available "legally" through one sports broadcaster/streamer or another. That's honestly the easiest way to do it when you can.

Personally, I've never used a VPN abroad that really works with U.S. apps for live sports.
Thanks for your insight.

That's good advise. That's why I recommended two that I know have a track record and are well reviewed.

I've used the older GL-AR750S-Ext (Slate) for years. It's set up as a client that I connect to the hotel WiFi or Ethernet and all devices connect to it. Not only does it get around the device limits of many hotels, I don't have to connect everything to a new network. Just the router. Also it has a configurable switch that I set to VPN on/off. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I highly recommend Gl-inet especially if you have some tech know how. It supports OpenVPN and WireGuard. You can download config files for a bunch of VPNs from their website. Cloudflare DNS over TLS. They make good stuff. I wouldn't mind replacing mine for a faster model by it just won't die and they are still releasing firmware six years later. Also the new models are like double the size of the older unit.

I've used a couple older gl-inet boxes for years. Haven't set up vpn on them though. One got dedicated to covering my home's only sluggish wifi space in my basement at the beginning of covid. I haven't touched it since beyond firmware updates. The other has just been a rarely used travel router.

I'm just now looking at getting a pair of the new ones. One set up as my home router/firewall, one vpn paired to it. It looks like it should work...

The VPN worked in the UK. In addition because the start time of the Baylor game was early enough, I watched the first half in a sports bar.
I can use the VPN to watch the Arizona game but it will be too late to stay up to watch at my next stop-Italy around 2-3 am).
However, using the VPN I was able to record the game on my DVR back home using the Fios app.

I’m in Paris then London. Have a VPN but seems unclear if it will work. Which one did you use that worked?

FYI, I just got back from Europe and was able to use Sling TV and the March Madness Live app on my phone to watch games. I had an international plan with AT&T for cell service while I was there. It would not work if I logged into local wifi, but worked as long as I was using cell service.

Without using a VPN at all?
