UNC's GM search

Bumping this because of the enjoyment I get reading the GM Search thread (at the very top) at Inside Carolina Premium. Much confusion as to what, if any, process they are following....one person said he expects the choice to be Cluster F. Buzz Peterson was much mentioned and much ridiculed, now some guy Mike Schmitz, who is an assistant GM with the Trailblazers and has a thin resume' is being mentioned.
Maybe they should hire Nina, Jon and Rachel Baker as consultants to help them along.
Mike Schmidtz was part of Draft Express, along with Givony, back in the day. He was actually the lead scout, if memory serves. If Hubert really doesn’t want to scout and recruit, it wouldn’t be a bad choice based on the limited knowledge I have of him.

but it would appear that his experience in the endorsement/NIL area is thin to non existent, just marketing in general, where Rachel Baker excels.

I honestly don't think UNC even knows what a GM is supposed to do. Are they in charge of recruiting? Managing NIL deals? Identifying talent? Marketing the program? Developing social media? Their job interviews probably look something like this:

It is an interesting question. I assume that at Duke Baker manages the NIL side of things. I'm not sure who is doing the recruiting/talent identification? Is that Schrage? Or someone else. From what everyone says Baker is doing a great job but I don't think that talent evaluation is her area of expertise. But clearly someone is doing it and doing it and doing it well.

Rachel's on the business side, not the basketball side. Assisting players with NIL, e.g. Also, reminding them on tax matters -- coverage, filing deadlines, esr. tax payments -- all would and should be handled by tax professionals.

Yes - that is what I stated and assumed. Though "tax matters" are a drop in the bucket. But who manages the rest of it? Because whoever found Sion in particular and realized that he was a great fit deserves a lot of credit. It is not rocket science but not easy either. Gillis and Brown were also great additions and deserve a lot of credit but the talent ID part of finding them was less challenging.

Baker is definitely on the marketing side, setting up NIL deals for players and helping to make connections. It sounds like at other schools the GM may be involved in on court stuff. For UNC, Hubert just sort of announced that they need a GM and that they way they currently do things isn't working, but doesn't seem to know any more than that.

I had no idea the extent of what she did until I listened to the brotherhood podcast earlier this season that featured Rachel and Cooper with Caleb. I was surprised to hear her say she checks in with each player AND their families almost daily. It sounded like she is the primary liaison between each family and the team. And she knows each player individually very, very well.

The way Cory Alexander talked about Baker yesterday, you would have thought she was identifying transfers Jon should recruit. I'm guessing that the title General Manager has led to a lot of confusion, which is great. I'm glad it is confusing the feeble brains in Chapel Hill.

yes, the general tenor over at IC is that they don't really know what they're doing or looking for...definitely agree Baker is not Jon's chief talent scout...she does lots of other stuff as is noted above.

"do you think the skills to bring in 5 star recruits, and then stifle their development enough that they lose all NBA prospects and stick around for 5 years?

I thought that was weird and an overreach on his part. That isn’t what I have understood her role to be. But of course I could be wrong.

The thing I think is so valuable is she is flexible, and doesn’t try to force a square peg into a round hole. If she has a player who is very active on social media, like Jared McCain, she will help them maximize their socials. If she has a player who is not very active on social media, like Cooper, she helps them maximize their NIL value in other ways.

She has said this team is the least involved with social media that we have had. Which I think is probably a good thing.

2 things I found interesting in the article in The Athletic about Cooper -
He deleted his Twitter/X account at the beginning of the season to avoid the toxicity.
His parents’ house in Greensboro was furnished through an NIL deal of his.

Hubert next gonna announce he needs a practice coach, game day coach and motivational coach?

As a semi-interested observer (who doesn't love a good train wreck) I think they are largely stuck with the status quo until Hubert is gone, and it seems like he'll get another year (at least). Their well deserved rep for not developing talent and not getting guys to the league quickly (if ever) has, IMO, tainted him. Who knows, maybe they get a huge influx of talent via the Porthole, that's what could save him.

but enough about Hubie - what about the rest of the team.....?
I kid.. I kid.. Hubert looks extremely stressed and unhappy right now.

FTR, Ian Jackson did have a very good game yesterday for the Heels, after performing poorly for several weeks. It’s possible that he salvages his draft stock if he can keep it up, and he and Drake Powell both go pro.

IC does not even agree on whether the GM will report into Hubert or vice versa. Worst of all, they could be peers reporting into Bubba so they just point the finger at each other when things go south again next year.

Every school does this differently. There is not a consensus. Also, it is not IC's decision as to what they do - they do not speak for the UNC athletic department.

I dislike UNC a lot also, but let's be reasonable. The mods do the best they can but if DBR was judged by our worst posts we wouldn't look great either.

It is sad/comical that a program like UNC basketball which is obnoxious about thinking it is the be all and end all of men's college basketball is so far behind on something that many other programs have embraced. But let's be intelligent and reasonable in our insults.
