The saga of Daniel Jones thread

Daniel should talk to his buddy Saquon about what it is like to play behind a decent O-line. Barry Sanders couldn't do anything on this Giants team. Jones has made his fortune. Now go somewhere where you can win and are less likely to get hurt if you get in the game. I think the Raiders now need a QB but if I were him, I would say no thanks.

Meanwhile, I'm hoping the Giants don't take Sanders. Talented QB but they don't need that circus, especially not in NY. Jets should do the same thing.

Exactly... Someone might want to tell NYGiants team execs that without an offensive line your QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs basically won't be able to do much of anything productive...
Exactly, it's like they forgot about thier meat and potatoes. That's one of my pet peaves. You gotta have a good line .

The Giants have invested a lot in the offensive line between the draft and free agency. Either they have chosen poorly or the players just haven't gelled. I would have broken the bank on the best offensive line coach around - perhaps that was the issue.

They took Jones in 2019
2020 Andrew Thomas #4 in the first round and another OL in the 3rd round
2022 Evan Neal #7 in the first round and another OL in the 3rd round
2023 John Michael Schmitz in the 2nd round

This year they signed a few fairly prominent OL in free agency. And there have been others in past years.

Wanna know why Philly has such a good OL? OL Coach Jeff Stoutland.

Jones expected to sign this week, he wants to be with a contender...Mini Soda and Ballmer seem to be interested.
I'm surprised it has taken this long. He could sign at 4:00 Monday afternoon and I was expecting an announcement at 4:01 so that he was starting to practice somewhere immediately. He is a bright guy but it still takes time to learn a playbook.

Doesn't "anti-tampering rule" prevent any discussions? If so, they're starting from scratch.

When he's on the roster?
Yes. I have many times heard about teams allowing other teams to talk to their players when they are discussing trades because the other team wants to know that they can sign the player long term before doing the trade.

In this case you are probably right and they likely just told Jones to wait a few days, but at the same time, if a team started talking to him, I don't think they would have complained. As dysfunctional as the Giants are, they are doing right by Daniel by cutting him rather than just making him sit - they were well within their rights to do so, and they are paying him either way.

Jones has been signed to the Vikings practice squad (which leaves him freely available to sign to another team's roster if interest arises). If Darnold has starting offers for next season, good opportunity for Jones to get a leg up as a placeholder/backup for them.

To add color for those who are not aware:

Vikings drafted JJ McCarthy from Michigan as their QB of the future late in the first round. He was scheduled to backup Sam Darnold for a learning year but tore his meniscus in pre-season so is out for the year. Darnold is outperforming expectations so unclear what the plan is for next year - he is currently on a one year, $10MM contract - he is expected to get much more next year if he keeps this up. Currently behind Darnold are Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien.
