The Fitness Thread

I started working out at Orangetheory a few weeks ago. That’ll kick your booty right into shape. Making slow but steady progress.
I've not talked to anyone who has given that a shot. It'll be interesting to hear what you think about it in a few months.

Cool thread!

In my late 40s, body appreciates that I've replaced 2-3 long runs per week with 4-5 sessions on the elliptical. Last year my 10 y/o daughter smoked me on a 2-mile run and I took that as a less-than-subtle hint, lol.

I've found mental/emotional fitness are just as important. Daily meditation and proactive approach to maintaining local and long-distance relationships with family and friends have also really helped.

Very good. I used to run but am now a proponent of walking at a very brisk pace 5-6 miles per day. Good cardio and much better long term for the joints I know very few people my age who are still running without joint or back problems

My cousin went there for awhile and liked it. Her schedule got too hectic so she bought a peloton, which is what I use too, and is enjoying that as well.

360 lb. back squat PR at 47 years old and 194 lb. bodyweight.

Couldn't figure out how to upload a video, so there is an IG link.

BONUS: wearing a Duke shirt. Go Devils!!!

That's awesome! I'm 57 and stopped lifting heavy a while back. These days I use dumbbells in parking lots with Camp Gladiator. Great job hitting that PR at 47, absolutely love it!

Anyone do any Spartan Races? I did my first one about 6 weeks ago signed up for 2 more (10k and 5k) in November. Gives me something to train for. Going to do some trail runs (I'm built for speed so 5k is tough for me) and some OCR training at Warrior Tech...

Any use Gympass? My company had it, but got rid of it recently. I really miss Gympass, but now we use Active Fit and Direct, which to me, is nowhere near the quality of Gympass.

I have a few friends who have done Orange Theory. As far as I can tell, it hasn't changed their body composition much, or increased their strength. I think it has just made them better at Orange Theory.

IMHO, I think you have to lift heavy to bump up your metabolism and to gain strength. I prefer my powerlifting + running combo.

Thank you! I am hoping to keep hitting PRs into my late 50s. The literature I have read says that 60 is where it is really hard to keep the muscle on. Camp Gladiator looks cool. I couldn't find any locations near me.

A friend asked me to do one, but it was about a 90 minute drive and started at like 8:00 AM. It looks super fun, but I am such a terrible morning person. That plus the idea of driving back home for another 90 minutes covered in mud was a deal breaker.

I also have something to train for. Mental assurance that I can beat the teenage soccer prodigies in the house at a 5K/10K. We usually do a few neighborhood races each year, and I have to beat them or I'll lose it. So far, I am hanging in there.

about 10 years ago I nearly bought the Orange Theory franchise for part of Albuquerque. At the literal last minute, they sold that location to another buyer and offered us a different side of town, which made my wife livid. We decided not to move forward.

And that’s when you started doing chemistry? I’ve heard about you Albuquerque guys.

(And I will again say: NM may be the prettiest state in the Nation).

I actually didn't watch Breaking Bad until Covid, so the show had finished a few years before I saw it. It was really cool watching it due to the fact that Albuquerque is basically a character in the show. I recognized virtually every location. When Better Call Saul came out, parts of it were filmed in my old office.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times; there is no reason that Albuquerque shouldn't be growing like Phoenix or Denver. We have incredible weather and virtually no natural disasters. It's also beautiful here. Throw in two national labs and multiple Air Force Bases across NM, and it makes for a really attractive place to live and build a business (you would think).

To get this back on topic, my two herniated discs are recovering. I signed up for an online PT program called Core Balance Training. It's like $300 for 4 months. I get a lesson a day. So far it's working well. I returned to my normal workout schedule about 8 weeks ago and bought a treadmill for my office. I am literally walking right now as I type this. I get 10,000 steps in before 9:30 am. I have a physical today with my MD. Bloodwork yesterday. Diabetes runs in my family and my glucose was at 105. My A1C was fine last time, so I'm not too worried. If the doctor is concerned, I'll tweak my diet a bit. I'm generally a very health conscience person so it won't be too hard for me to subtract some bad carbs and sugars. I would prefer not to take any meds at this point. I haven't had it officially checked in a while, but I would bet good money that my body fat is below 15%, so the glucose does frustrate me a bit. Maybe I'll add more high intensity cardio. That has been the thing that has suffered most with this disc problem. High impact of running or jumping is no bueno.

No no no, you're saying it backwards. You are supposed to convince everybody that they would be out of their minds to even want to start to consider locating there.

I believe the Longmire TV show (probably among many others) was filmed in various locations in your fair state. 'nuff said.

Minor fitness accomplishment - I decided to get myself a rowing machine (went with a Hydrow over a C2 because of the video/workout programming, which I know is anathema to true rowers but has 100% been the right call for me) last fall because I wanted to get into an exercise routine. Did my first row on it on Halloween of 2023, going just 10 minutes and 2316 meters. Last night I completed my 228th row on the machine and hit the 1 million meter mark overall, in what was a PR pace (1:57.7/500) for a 30 minute row. Am currently in the middle of a 12-week training program to do a half marathon on the machine (current longest row is just under 8 miles, although I am scheduled for a 10-miler Saturday).

I have made a recent discovery. My exercise is pretty much limited to walking for an hour at a 4 mph clip (my math tells me that is a total of 4 miles). I wasn't having a problem maintaining that, but I started having some back issues and discovered that my walking posture was far from the best. I started holding myself more upright and doing some other minor recommended tweaks. I now find that it takes me rather more effort to maintain that walking pace. After some deliberation, I came to the conclusion that I must have been slightly "falling forward" as I was walking. I don't know if that makes any sense or not, but it works for me; and my back does feel a bit better now.

whatever eliminates pain is good. Do you like your shoes? Our hermit group is really into the comfort of Hokas, enjoy noting that nurses and others on their feet all the time like them.

The act of walking forward is just exactly that...falling forward and catching yourself. Running is just falling forward faster.

Yes, I agree ... but there are degrees of fall. I feel very different now when I'm exercise walking. Before, when some moisture was on the track, I was very leery of slipping and falling on my face. Now, with my better posture, I don't even think about that. I'm sure I could still slip ... but I feel very centered and capable of recovering from a slip. Maybe that's a bit delusional, but being that I'm very cautious about those kinds of things in general it's probably a safe delusion.
