The 2024 Transfer Portal

I just saw that Andrej Stojakovic (Peja's kid) is transferring from Stanford after one year in the wake of Haase's firing. He was a top 20 recruit and had a Duke offer, although my memory is that we ended up prioritizing someone else (TJ Power maybe?) and weren't really in the running towards the end. His freshman numbers aren't great but Stanford has been a mess generally lately, so I'm not sure how much to read into his stats. Given the history, maybe someone to keep an eye on if Duke does go after a transfer. He's coming from Stanford and is only a year into college, so whatever the credit transfer issue that haunts Duke lately would presumably be less of an issue.

I don’t think he would be someone Duke would be interested in because he is too similar to Powers and Evans. He is a 6-6 small forward.

I would hope if Duke goes after anyone in the portal it would be an experienced point guard, unless Proctor returns, which is doubtful.

Are non grad transfers still allowed to play immediately next year? Or did the court ruling change that?

My prediction is that one or two of these transfers will unexpectedly have a stellar 2025 and on this board we will lament not going after that player even though we have no idea who will have the unexpected success.

DBR self-aware humor...

Hubert should surf this site do he only picks up Maneks and Ingrams - and no Nances. We know things.

The incoming recruiting class includes four wings, so Scheyer doesn't seem too concerned with positional overlap. That said, I agree adding a fifth via transfer would be a bit, uh, exuberant, and also that an experienced guard would be a better fit for the projected roster. It also seems unlikely Stojakovic would want to transfer into an already crowded position. Still, a former 5* with a previous Duke offer on the transfer market is noteworthy.

I just did some googling on Stojakovic and in addition to his great paternal basketball lineage, I found that his mom is a Greek model, and further google searches confirmed that she is well qualified for her chosen line of work.

If Scheyer gets someone from the portal it needs to be a contribute not a practice player from the Ivy League who can’t play

If we bring in anyone from the portal other than possibly a practice player, it means it's been a very bad offseason. We have a stable full of 5* players expected to see rotation minutes next year. We just have to be a little patient as these guys get older.

I don't think the data suggests "getting older" fixes much. Talent is what matters. We need talent to get more experience. Not sure we have that talent at every position as of now.

Well according to the Torvik Talent metric, Duke is #1 out of the 355 D1 teams in talent. Don't think we can get any more talented than that vs the competition. Although next year we WILL be more talented.

No, we need all this 5* talent to stick around and get older, stronger, more experienced. We have eight 5* players on the current roster all with eligibility remaining for next year. And we have five more 5* players arriving for next year. We should be able to field quite a team without any incoming transfers...

I don't know how Torvik measures talent but I'll be happy if we make the S16 this year, so maybe we shouldn't rely on their metric.

We needed a 5 last offseason and missed. I see us needing at least a PG if we want to make a F4 run next year.

Another great example of the sacrifices and commitment we make as Duke fans!

Ok, our first legit star has entered the portal. Tyson Acuff from Eastern Michigan is in as a 5th year Covid grad transfer. He is not very efficient but takes a ton of shots and averaged 21.7ppg this season at Eastern Michigan. It is worth noting that his younger brother is in the high school class of 2025 and is widely considered the top PG in that class. Darius Acuff has already taken official visits to Kentucky and Michigan. Duke is one of the few blue blood programs that has not taken a major interest in him so far (we are focused on Cayden Boozer at PG in the 2025 class). He says he wants to visit Houston and Kansas too.
