RIP John Feinstein

The Post is reporting that Feinstein died today. No cause immediately available.

"John Feinstein, a Washington Post sportswriter who became the best-selling author of more than 40 books, including “A Season on the Brink,” an inside look at volatile Indiana University men’s basketball coach Bob Knight, died March 13 at his brother’s home in McLean, Virginia. He was 68."

Whoa, that is very sad news. Not only is he a Duke legend but also a college basketball scribe legend. I have read so many of his books. I still think his chapter in "A March to Madness" titled, "We're Winning on Wednesday" about Duke's preparation to play UNC in 1997 is one of the best depictions of Coach K, warts and all, that I have ever read, especially his maniacal definition and defense of Duke's basketball standards. This must have been sudden because apparantly he has a story about Tom Izzo in today's Post.

Wow, only 68. Feinstein absolutely left his mark in sports writing, especially books. Didn't always agree with his takes when it came to Duke, especially how Duke Football was an easy target for him, but his style and takes were unique to him.

RIP

Wow, puts things in perspective, and I dunno if it counts as a cruel twist of irony, I think that would be losing a bit of perspective, but during the ACC tournament makes it more poignant somehow. No doubt the press corps covering the tournament will be shaken up.

Yes, very sad news and way too young to die. My condolences to his family. I don't want to speculate needlessly but if he died suddenly, perhaps a heart attack? I enjoyed many of books but sometimes found him to be a little too "know it all" with his on-air commentary, whether on college basketball or golf or another sport. Reminded me a little of that other (in)famous Duke sports commentator - Jay Bilas; perhaps, they shared some of the same "Duke" DNA?

I attended the "5 Banners" informal chat between K and Feinstein over Duke Family Weekend in October. It was very entertaining, not just for me but also my wife (non-Duke grad) and son (class of '28). There was real warmth and respect between them, but also frequently an edgy humor to their exchanges. I must say in hindsight though, that John did not look very healthy at the time. Never exactly svelte, he was noticeably heavier than I recalled and had more trouble than K getting up to and across the stage at the Bryan Center., as well as up and down from his seat.

Sad and surprising news. I would think he was a year or two older, since he was in my class and my 70th birthday was a few days ago. Unless he was a prodigy…
