Name, Image, Likeness

I don't view any of this as rumor-mongering, which to my mind has to involve some sort of negative insinuation rather than "I wonder if..." type thoughts. I pointed to a likely--very likely--source for BYU's NIL riches, and made clear I was relying on Occam's Razor in doing so. If you want to attack any of this discussion as rumor-mongering, perhaps start with the "my nameless buddy is an outside vendor to the LDS church and swears the church is sickened by NIL and in fact BYU may drop all revenue sports" post?

Sorry, did the LDS church issue a statement affirming that they don't give to BYU athletics or to BYU NIL? Maybe they have--I would have no idea and it would be interesting to know if such a statement exists. If you're just going on what's been stated in this thread, it's a nameless lawyer who works for the church who allegedly knows everything.
You may not trust Google or Gemini, its AI product, but there is an explicit denial from BYU athletics that it receives any portion of the tithing to the LDS church.

It seems to me that your conclusion about "one likely source" is a conclusion without supporting facts. Isn't that rumor mongering?
LOL! I actually posted about this the other night, then thought better of it and removed my post and opted to use the report option instead. Not a peep of a reply about that from anyone, and the post still stands, but it makes me question the use of that button.
Either way, "I know someone who knows what is going on a BYU. I cannot provide a link but here is what I can tell you" is the very definition of rumor mongering, regardless of the info that follows.

Your use of sarcasm aside, thanks! That's a reasonable and informative reply. The statement there is from BYU rather than the LDS church, and the statement is also limited to "tithing" funds, but at least it's on point and points, partially, in a certain direction.

It seems to me that your conclusion about "one likely source" is a conclusion without supporting facts. Isn't that rumor mongering? The BYU Alumni includes many successful, wealthy individuals - much like Duke. Lack of knowledge of who they are does not mean that they don't exist. They tend to be private, out-of-the-spotlight individuals
You just cited the standard proof that they are space aliens. :alien::alien:

You're seriously coming after me, twice, for being curious about funding sources, when I'm replying to a post where an unnamed individual predicted the demise of BYU athletics? With all due respect, *that* is the rumor-mongering.
Apologies for instigating this mess. I have no stake in the game and really do not care how BYU or the LDS church supports or does not support athletics, so long as it keeps landing UNC targets. I was simply responding to the assumption underlying some posts that the LDS Church paid some of the Dybantsa money. From internet sources and a Church insider (I lived and practiced law in Utah for a decade), it did not. But we will never know the absolute NIL truth. CougarBoard (what a mess - makes me appreciate this interface) has had several long threads about whether the Church should pay NIL $$. See, e.g., https://www.cougarboard.com/board/message.html?id=32886836.

As a total aside - the BYU v. U rivalry is underrated. Those fans hate each other, with some interesting religious undertones that do not exist in other rivalries.

Not sarcasm -- my own skepticism of AI tools. I was apologizing for not digging further.

My guru Zvi thinks they have weaknesses but will continue to improve.

Washington Post article on what Cooper means for college basketball. Lot of social media and NIL discussion, so I'm posting in this thread, but I acknowledge it could go elsewhere:

“Before Victor Wembanyama was drafted, NBA fans would do anything to catch a glimpse of him: YouTube clips, social media, the fuzziest stream of European games,” said Neal Pilson, a sports television consultant and the former president of CBS Sports. “Now with Flagg, it’s the likely No. 1 pick playing for Duke, not just any major college, and he’s on ESPN all the time. That’s much more accessible. If the men’s game needed an answer to the Caitlin Clark boom, you can’t ask for better than that.”

and

“Once in a while, a kid will be like: ‘Well, what if I don’t want to?’” said Rachel Baker, who helps Duke players manage NIL and social media as the program’s general manager. “And we’re like: ‘That’s great, too. That’s totally fine.’ … Cooper falls much more in that bucket. I have to look, but I’m not sure the last time he posted on any of his social channels. He can passively grow his brand and use Duke and our channels to tell the story for him.”

What a great addition she has been to the Duke staff. Very forward thinking of Jon to have hired her. I loved hearing her on the podcast with Cooper and CFos earlier this year. I had no idea how much almost daily contact she has with the players and their families, and how well she knows the individual players.

She was sitting directly behind Jon last night and got VERY animated when the Pitt PG fell to the ground and Kon got called for the foul. It was funny. And it's great to see she's such a big fan.

So now NIL payments have to be Title IX compliant? Wonder how this plays out...

This is like someone saying NBA salaries must match what is paid to WNBA players… and that isn’t even including what is done with the massive football NIL payouts that already dwarf what is being paid to college basketball players.

The courts are gonna have to weigh in. This is a massive mess.

Call Bilas. I'm sure he has an idea and answer.

This was an issue in fútbol with USMNT v. USWNT recently. The USWNT was SO much better than the men, but the men made much more per game because the audience was much bigger. It’s a thorny issue.

What do you mean by better? They could beat them head to head?

I'm all for Title IX in college but comparing men's and women's professional salaries always seemed silly to me. Aren't these audience-driven businesses?

I doubt male gymnasts are making more than female gymnasts. Figure skaters. Volleyball players.

The USWNT have won four Women's World Cup titles (1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019), five Olympic gold medals (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2024), nine CONCACAF Women’s Championship titles, and one CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup title. They dominated their sport for decades.

The USMNT has never reached the World Cup finals, and last reached the semifinals in 1930.

If you think those results merit calling the USMNT “better,” we have to agree to disagree. But yes, a men’s team that is middling earns more than a women’s team that is dominant. That does not make the men’s team better IMHO, just that they play in a league with larger viewership (mainly due to their competition, not their performance).

Market share of the league is a factor. But so are results of the specific team IMO. Should SEC football players be paid more NIL money than ACC players because more people watch SEC football? If so, the ACC is cooked so we might as well start looking for another landing spot.
