Movies/TV worth watching (or at least discussing)

Any "Righteous Gemstones" fans here? My wife and I just watched the "Prelude" episode that leads into the new season. WOW. I was blown away and highly impressed. Danny McBride working with Bradley Cooper to create a flashback episode set in the Conferderate Civil War? Genius work.
That episode was probably the best of the entire series! I was disappointed it was the only one like it.

Love the show. That episode caught me by surprise. Danny McBride always comes up with creative, off-the-wall ideas. The idea of an award titled Top Christ Following Man of the Year alone justifies watching the show!

I do like the show but sometimes McBride goes too lowbrow and childish. It’s kind of a B- show for me…

I saw "Fool Me Once" on Netflix recently. It's a limited series, which is my preference, and was decent. I do have to say that if you like it for one episode, don't give up on it. Stay to the end.

Just finished watching the last episode of Adolescence.

It's brutal. Devastating. A really tough watch.

I honestly don't know if I could recommend it.

I just watched all four episodes over the last two nights and wow… that was emotional. In particular the final 5-10 mins of episode 4.

I know a very large majority of men in my own life who have fallen into the online manosphere/incel culture. One of my closest family members is currently destroying his own long term relationship because of the amount of videos he watches online (He too started with Andrew Tate). This was incredibly real to me and I wonder how I would have turned out if I had found some of those videos and message boards at the wrong time in life. Most the men and boys I know who have gotten into it did so during Covid shutdowns as they had little else to do aside from scrolling online.

It does almost feel like required watching if you have younger kids, boys or girls.

Your honest response makes me sad. Not you of course, just hard to believe this stuff is real.

Tbh it’s much worse than what the show puts on. Most of these dudes don’t even see women as human anymore and literally blame every issue they have in life on women. It’s incredibly depressing to deal with. If you have kids, I’d definitely monitor the things they watch online, regardless of age. It won’t help much as they become adults but hopefully delaying it will help.

Saw Thunderbolts* yesterday. It’s good if you like Marvel movies.

The other interesting things was every single preview (9 or 10 of them) was for a sequel or a remake/new movie from existing IP (Tron, Superman, Bad Guys 2, Megan 2.0, new Predator movie, Fantastic Four, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Jurassic World, Mission Impossible, and I may be forgetting some). Not a single new movie.

When I saw it there was a trailer for the new Wes Anderson film, "The Phoenician Scheme" as well as the $300+ mil Apple film F1.

But yeah... there ain't a lot of new stuff that gets the big time trailer treatment these days. This would be my quick list of original films that will make more than $20 mil at the boxoffice this summer:

F1
The Phoenician Scheme
Elio
The Life of Chuck
Eddington
Weapons
Materialists
Caught Stealing

...and maybe Friendship, Honey Don't, and Hurry up Tomorrow.

Not a lot else.

I enjoyed "The Four Seasons" with Tina Fey (also writing), Steve Carrell, Will Forte, and others. Witty and a fairly light watch, but still with character development and emotions. Also, a cameo from 89-year-old Alan Alda, who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie it is loosely based on.

Just watched season 1 of Night Agent and it was as I suspected - a fun, brainless spy thriller. Good, not great.

TV series I am waaay behind on a need to watch ASAP (in no particular order)

1. Andor
2. Adolescence
3. Last of US
4. The Studio
5. Handmaid's Tale
6. The Pitt
7. Hacks
8. The Four Seasons

Ugh...

Jason had posted this in the Severance thread, but I thought my response would be better here.

1. This week’s batch of Andor (7-9) was outstanding.
3. I’m really enjoying this season although not as much as season one of Last of Us.
5. This season of Handmaid’s Tale has been pretty good. After the setup on this week’s episode, I am amped up for next week to drop.

Sorry to be lazy for not going through all the posts, but......has anyone seen Sinners?
Yes - really enjoyed it. Music was great, vibe was great, acting was great. It's a very adult movie - I wouldn't take kids under high school age - but definitely a good time at the movies. And worth seeing on the big screen (I did not see it on IMAX, just the normal big screen).

Night Agent Season One was pretty good. Season 2 didn't grab me.

My favorite Night [NOUN] show of recent years is The Night Manager. Great story. Amazing cast. Apparently they are gearing up for a second and third seaon. Nine years later.

Poker Face is back. Still enjoyable but isn't not the same through the first three episodes for me. It feels a lot more of the screen time is going to the special guests to setup the plots. And man do they have a number of them (Jasmine Guy, Cynthia Erivo, Giancarlo Esposito, Katie Holmes, John Mulaney, Rhea Pearlman, Chris Bauer, Simon Helberg - returning). Those are just the bigger names. A few smaller but recognizable faces through the episodes. Erivo, though, was particularly good in her episode.
