MBB/WBB: ACC Tip-Off in Charlotte, October 8-10

The ACC does their preseason media thing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week. They'll hold press conferences for each men's and women's basketball team, and vote on their preseason superlatives. (Last year they released a top-to-bottom conference poll, named an All-ACC first and second team, and listed the top vote getters for Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.)

Each team's representatives (head coach and 2-3 players) were announced today, along with the schedule of interviews.

Duke WBB (Tuesday 1:30pm ET; ACCNX streaming link)
Head Coach Kara Lawson
Ashlon Jackson
Reigan Richardson

Duke MBB (Wednesday 3:30pm ET; ACCNX streaming link)
Head Coach Jon Scheyer
Caleb Foster
Tyrese Proctor

Each school is given a 30-minute slot. I think the livestream becomes a replay, but if it doesn't, the ACC Digital Network on YouTube will likely provide short clips.

If you're interested, Jaylen Blakes will be one of the Stanford attendees. None of the other in-conference transfers from Duke (Christian Blakes Reeves, TJ Power, Jaden Schutt) were chosen to represent their new teams.

Fascinating. I would think that attendees might give a hint about who the captains will be? Good for Jaylen!

The ACC Network is showing general ACC Tip-Off content all day for the next 3 days, while ACCNX will stream team press conferences. Some more specifics about what you'll see from the Duke women today:

Remember, the Duke men show up in Charlotte Wednesday.

I don't know about captaincy, but the trend is to send upperclassmen, and in the case of SMU and Stanford, a transfer who played in the ACC last season. (Just as Stanford chose Jaylen Blakes, SMU is bringing former Wake Forest player Kevin Miller. Cal did not add anyone with ACC experience.)

It's mostly a list of academic juniors, seniors, and grads. Among the men, Andrej Stojakovic (Cal), Caleb Foster (Duke), Taylor Bol Bowen (FSU), Naithan George (GT), and Jaland Lowe (Pitt) are the only true, non-redshirt sophomores I see.

Not to beat a dead horse, but this is where the geographic spread of the conference gets ridiculous. The Cal and Stanford players (and SMU to a lesser extent) have to schlep across the country to attend this thing? Missing a few classes in the process (not that anyone cares about those)? And spending a nice chunk of change on air fares, hotels, etc.? I am all for face-to-face meetings, but in this age of zoom, one would think they could just do it on Zoom. Unless I am missing something, but the reference to a hotel location leads me to believe it is all in person.

Now get off my lawn.

I like having Cal, Stanford and SMU in the conference. However I agree that an accommodation could have been made. Unless the players wanted to come East (job interviews, sight seeing trip, etc.).

Are those pressers going to be archived somewhere? That is EXACTLY the time when I won't be able to listen.

There is value in having the new ACC coaches (Cal's Mark Madsen, Louisville's Pat Kelsey, SMU's Andy Enfield, and Stanford's Kyle Smith) introduce themselves face-to-face with the ACC media at the beginning of the season, because after that there will be weekly conferences on Zoom and the occasional interaction at postgame pressers.

It does seem less important for the players, who don't really have to know the media members in the course of their season, and certainly not the ones who aren't local. And I don't think a short trip to Charlotte allows, say, Cal's Mady Sissoko (a grad transfer from Michigan State) any time to visit the Hornets facility.

Yes, but I was incorrect earlier when I said "I think the livestream becomes a replay". They are available as replays on ESPN, but the links have changed. I will try to post the Duke WBB and Duke MBB replay links when they become available.

That would be much appreciated, thank you!

Here's the full replay of the Duke WBB press conference with Coach Kara Lawson, senior Reigan Richardson, and junior Ashlon Jackson. It's an ACCNX link, so you'll need to sign in with your TV provider (one that has the ACC Network in its package). I'm not sure how long this replay will be available, so watch it soon if you're interested.

If you can't, here are a couple of short clips from the ACC Digital Network on YouTube.

I heard Terrence Ogelsby, former Clemson Tiger and current media member, refer to it as the All Coast Conference.

Bump/reminder.

Meanwhile, here's some Duke WBB content recapping their experience, starting with a whirlwind video that makes their media commitments look like a movie press junket:

If you were watching the ACC Network on TV yesterday, they had segments with various players and coaches all day. The team shared two segments. Here's Reigan Richardson and Ashlon Jackson speaking with Justin Walters, Kelly Gramlich, and (content warning) Ivory Latta:

And here's Coach Kara Lawson having a conversation with Mark Packer, Debbie Antonelli, and Muffet McGraw:

In case you weren't able to see the team press conference on ACCNX, the North Carolina Sports Network posted the whole thing on YouTube:

If you'd rather read, the ACC posted a transcript (HTML version, PDF version).

Somehow I get the feeling that Mark Packer isn't going to ask the one recruiting question anyone else would want to ask when in the presence of Carlos Boozer and Jon Scheyer right now.

Edited to add: The segment just ended, and Packer did at least acknowledge that they spent 15 minutes talking without addressing the recruiting elephant in the room. Boozer and Scheyer were both giving off "we're not touching that" vibes.

I only caught the end of the interview. But Packer did close with something like “and we’re not going to talk about Recruiting”, which prompted a laugh from Jon and Carlos.

Here's the full replay of Stanford's team press conference on ACCNX. Coach Kyle Smith credits Duke volleyball player Millie Muir (GoDuke bio), the daughter of Stanford's athletic director, for referring him to Jaylen Blakes, when his own staff was unaware of Blakes' availability.

In a clip just posted on YouTube, Blakes said that early team bonding at Stanford involved skydiving, which was news to Coach Smith. He also talked about the importance of education at both schools, and staying on good terms with the Duke people he's seen at this event.

And here's the transcript (HTML version, PDF version). Not sure who this "Jaylen Thompson" is, random ACC intern.

Edited to add: Tim Donnelly of 99.9 The Fan speaks one-on-one with Blakes.

The Duke men finished their press conference on ACCNX, and ESPN has already put up the full replay. To watch, log in with your TV provider credentials.

Similarly instantaneous is the ACC's transcript (HTML version, PDF version).

The Field of 68 is livestreaming their interviews all afternoon. Coach Scheyer has yet to speak, but you can see Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster early on (there's no timestamp yet, but they appear early on, right after the Georgia Tech segments and before SMU coach Andy "I went from Boogie to Boopie" Enfield).

Coach Scheyer has spoken to 99.9 The Fan:

If you can't watch ACCNX, there are a pair of brief clips of Duke's press conference posted on YouTube by the ACC Digital Network. Raise your hand if you thought the first question would be about Gordon Hayward.

Maybe Jaden Schutt was there in spirit? According to the ACC's transcript, the first question at the Virginia Tech MBB press conference this morning was about him:

Q. With the few transfers that you picked up, one of them was Jaden Schutt out of Duke, who was coming off a knee injury. How has his progress been?

MIKE YOUNG: Really, really good. He did not participate in the full-contact stuff this summer, and you can see him still rounding into shape, but he's completely healthy. He's practiced very, very well.

We scrimmaged yesterday. He had a good day. Jaden Schutt is a good basketball player. We're thrilled he's in Blacksburg. He's doing a nice job for the Hokies.

TJ Power was not mentioned in the Virginia MBB press conference (transcript). And no one asked Tony Bennett about his grooming regimen, or if he feels threatened by Neal Begovich's magnificent hair? Who are these journalists???

Clemson has their team presser sometime this afternoon. If they discuss Christian Blakes Reeves at all, I'll post it here.
