MBB: Duke 86, Wofford 35 Post Game Thread

The final score is deceptive. We didn't play our best. Maybe Wofford is a bad shooting team, but I'm sure they don't normally miss THAT many wide open looks. Definitely a lot of defensive breakdowns to go over in the film room for this one. Also didn't like that we gave up 12 offensive boards to them, gotta be better with such a massive size advantage.

Probably sounds like nitpicking, but with the schedule we have coming up, we need to play better.

Ngongba has good footwork, sees and passes to open man, doesn’t fluster. He can play, though may not get a chance in close games. Might get more rebounds than Maluach in physical scrums underneath, as in today’s game.

Wow, despite what I would consider a lacking defensive effort, our defensive rating went up to #2 on KenPom after this game. Thanks for missing so many open shots, Wofford.

Apparently Wofford focused on emulating the wrong part of our game against UK

Not sure I’d call the effort lacking. We were all over the place defensively. The problem is sometimes we were all over in the wrong place… some material communication breakdowns leading to wide open, and thankfully missed, shots. But the rest of the D was just intimidating, especially Coop and Man-man.

You're right, maybe wrong choice of words. Perhaps "undisciplined" would be a better way to characterize the defense today.

-Sion back and looking 100% was great. He’s really important.

-Agree about the breakdowns on our perimeter defense, mostly due to bad communication on switches. Wofford really missed a lot of wide open looks.

-Really nice balance on offense, good ball and people movement.

-I like Proctor in the scoring role. I don’t think we need a “true point guard”. I could be wrong about that, but I think we have a lot of guys that can initiate, starting with Cooper.

-Very happy to see Big Pat out there. Nice work on the offensive glass tap outs.

-Evans is a BUCKET. We’d be smart to keep him simmering for when we need him.

-We were back to shooting a ton of 3s, which I think is good.

I'm glad Duke won big. Duke gave up lots of open 3s, and if Wofford made just 1/3 of their open looks Duke's defense wouldn't have looked nearly as good. Duke's 2nd half offense was pretty lame. Merely adequate.
Nice to see I. Evans have a very nice shooting game. 14 pts in 12 minutes! Maybe he'll get some more pt due to it. Pretty obvious why he's 1 notch up in the rotation compared to D. Harris.
I liked that both our PGs had good shooting games, even though they combined for only 4 assists (2 each).
Flagg's 3pt shooting has been pretty awful so far this year, at slightly north of 20%. Maybe Duke should scheme for fewer 3s from Flagg. He did everything else well though.
I also liked seeing Big Pat get in the game, and score! He coulda been useful vs. UK, but now we know that he's an option vs. the rest of our non-con opponents.
Maliq's ability to get his hands on the ball is amazing. So many deflections, tips, steals, blocks, and just general harrassment of the opponent.

Question: after the three-point goaltending play (that was ultimately waved off), why did they get the ball? At the time it lead to a five point play, but still, why did they get the ball after a missed shot or a made shot?

Question, do we officially have the youngest starting 5 in college hoops? Hard to imagine someone being younger. Coop and ManMan are still both 17? Kon must be 18. And Caleb and Tyrese must be 19, 20 max.

Sorry, I’m a bit off. Coop 17, Khaman just turned 18, Kon is 19 and Caleb and Tyrese are 20. Still very young.
