MBB: Duke 82, unc 69 - Postgame Thread

The talking heads will continue to ask if the ACC tested us enough. I'm not sure that is the right question. The better question to me is can Duke matchup with Team X or the SEC powerhouses. The answer seems to be a resounding yes.

Maybe the better question is how can a team match up with Duke. That appears to be a serious problem to ponder if you are meeting Duke on the court.

"The obsession with Foster is bizarre. He is utterly inconsequential
to the team at this point."
I debated whether to bring up this gem from a relatively recent thread, but decided to do it, without attribution, and without editorial comment. I think it speaks for itself.

He's set here, but he adjusts himself about 6 inches to the side while Cooper is in the air. They showed it about 6 times from directly overhead in the stadium.

Not saying he should have gotten the call, and he definitely shouldn't have put himself in that situation. But I think there's an argument to be made. Fortunately, it proved not to matter, and if anything may be a valuable lesson.
Yes, the overhead view made it look like a block, but it was a very close call. Live, I thought it was a charge.

Overall, despite the gnashing, pulling, and rending about the officials assigned to the game, I thought it was a pretty well officiated game.

OFFENSE:
Possessions: 67.7 (a fast pace, but surprisingly slower than recent games)
oRtg: 121.1 (126.5 adjusted; would be #5 nationally)
eFG%: 64.5% (outstanding)
3pt%: 47.4% (amazing)
2pt%: 61.1% (excellent)
%threes: 34.5% (normal-ish, but quite low for us)
FT rate: 23.6% (very bad)

OR%: 28.0% (bad)
TO%: 20.7% (poor)
a/to: 1.0 (not great)
fast break pts: 7 (meh)
So in response to an over aggressive defense the Duke players did what they were supposed to do, attack the basket, and their reward was a ridiculously low free throw rate? Sigh. I'm getting more than a little tired of how big a role physicality (aka fouling) and officials play in college basketball. The good thing is this team can fight through it. Not that appealing to watch however.

Was watching and my wife was sitting there and looked up asking “Is she actually crying?”
My kids get very into the games (they were raised right) and on the way to the two games we have attended in the last year I have told them they cant cry if we lose because they could end up on tv as “crying Duke fan.”

The two games we have been to were James Madison in the tournament last year and Illinois this year so my speech was completely unnecessary!

So incredibly proud of this team. I admit I thought we were done when UNC was up 7 and all the momentum was with them. I just love the fight they have.

I know this may not be popular, but I want to defend the crying UNC student for a minute. These games are really emotional for students, and there's so much pent up energy, excitement, and hope that when it comes crashing down the disappointment can feel overwhelming Especially when the loss may mean your team doesn't make the tournament. She probably feels badly for the seniors and it may have even been her last game as a student, which is emotional no matter the outcome (I've mentioned this before but my last game as a Crazie was 82-50 and I cried during the national anthem and all the way home). Note that I'm not calling out anyone for making fun of her, I get it. But I certainly empathize with her.

DDMF! GTHC! How sweep it is!

- Tactics - I mentioned in the pregame how Hubert made good adjustments in those 2022 games. I thought he did as well last night. Their bigger lineup was much more competitive defensively, with Withers doing a decent job on Cooper and Powell being physical on our wings off the ball (with dubious legality, but hey, we're going to see that every game from now on). Also, where has this UNC ball pressure been all year?!?! They are 308th in forcing turnovers, but they were really on us last night. You have to wonder what that staff has been doing defensively all year. Anyway, I thought Jon made really good counter-adjustments. They were cooking Man Man in middle ball screens, but Maliq came in and shut that down completely. Carolina hit a few silly stepback threes that ended up being fools gold - after drawing a lot of fouls in the first half, they stopped attacking the basket in the second. On offense, UNC's adjustments made this a Sion James game. Their little guards had no chance.

- Bench minutes turned the tide - When RJ Davis went to the bench in the second half, their offense cratered. Our defense gained new life with Maliq. And how about Caleb Foster? That may have been his best defense in a Duke uniform. What a decision by Jon to trust him in that moment.

- If this team wins it all, it will be because of our flexibility. This team can win in so many different ways. We have so many weapons on offense. We've added an element by playing more comfortably in high tempo games lately. Our bench has high-end talent and tough-as-nails veterans. There's really no matchup issue that scares me. I'm a tiny bit concerned about facing a team like Clemson with multiple post scorers, but a) not many teams have that in today's game and b) the staff has had some time to rethink our defensive approach (I really hope we see Clemson again next Saturday).

- Goals - ACC Regular Season Title - check. Sweep that lot down the road - check. Everything is in front of this team. Let's hang some more banners and make this a special March.

- One day we need to power rank Duke parents. Kelly Flagg has to be up there, along with Mama Duhon, Chucky Okafor, and some others. Shouts to neck brace Mama Laettner as well.

On the one hand, no amount of dancing on their grave will ever be enough.

On the other hand, god bless people who care this much. It's what the sport is all about.

Reading IC this morning is a guilty pleasure.....according to "sauces" over there duke is the apex with what is wrong with college BB and RJ came back for his 5th year because "he loves the school".......

I think we’ve got the makings of a stellar offseason thread right there. Of course there will be huge recency bias because TV has gotten so much more adept at showing certain parents, which makes earlier standouts all the more impressive. You also reminded me of this:
