MBB: Duke 103, ASU 47 Post Game Thread

I’m with you. I would love for it to happen but it is very unlikely.
Yes, if it was an official game then maybe we could get the Duke sports office looking at whether any Duke player has ever scored 15 points in 3:30 before.

But the juice is not worth the squeeze for an exhibition game.

I would guess Jason Williams and JJ did it or came close. Plus in end game situations there are extra possessions with all the fouls.

Just a quibble... If history is any guide, our experienced starting guards will play more minutes than our freshman starting center. Khaman could break the mold - he's an immensely talented guy and seems to be in great shape - but I still think it's likely he's a 25-30 min guy during competitive games while our other starters are more like 30-35 min.
I suspect that the staff have good analytics on when marginal performance of various players decreases and that this tends towards shorter stints or longer breaks for the young bigs, no matter what shape they are in.

Phredd, I'll give you 10-1 odds no one other than Kon scores 15 points in 3:31 this season. I think folks are underestimating how highly unusual that is.
I'm not much of a betting man, myself, but I think those are about the right odds. Conceivable. In other words, not likely to happen, but not really shocking if it does.

BTW, since you're the main occupant of Kon island, I will say this: Out of the top eight guys, I do think that Kon is notably the weakest defender. He's not a black hole, and he's smart, but he just does not have the physical skill to stay in front of people in space. ASU played a very weak offensive game, with few real plays and very little coordination as a team. If we play a team that is effective in manipulating the matchups they want, Kon is going to get punished. He's an offensive savant, and he is a legitimately excellent rebounder based on the little I've seen, so I'm not saying that he's an overall negative or in danger of not starting and playing big minutes. I think this team is defensively good enough to mostly hide him. But he really is pretty weak on that end, in my opinion. I'd love to hear how somebody with actual knowledge (e.g. an NBA scout) feels about him at this point.

I agree he's the weakest defender of the top 8. But I think he's probably a better defender right now than Evans or Harris, because he plays good position defense and leverages his strength.

I pointed out that he was getting picked on in CTC. I thought his defense looked passable against Lincoln. But I actually thought he looked good against ASU, cutting off dribble drivers multiple times and coming up with 2 steals in 20 minutes.

I think he will be an average ACC wing defender playing alongside 7 plus defender teammates. Time will tell whether teams target him. If they do and it's a problem, Jon has the option to bring in Mason or Sion.

...

I, too, think (hope) the pace will be more frenetic this season. I'm not sure that will be an issue for Khaman. Didn't the young man grow up playing soccer?
Helpful, unless he played goalie... with those long arms and blocking instincts, goalie might have been a good position for him.

Big Kon fan but he is gonna be picked on when Duke is on defense. I've been checking out UK and UNC, both of those teams are setting up to be tough challenges for Kon. They play fast and 5 out which means they will dragging out our bigs. It will be an interesting contrast in styles. Both of those teams are looking a lot tougher than i was thinking they would be.

UK can really shoot it. Jaxson Robinson (sp?) might be the best shooter in the countyr by the end of the season. He hit 9 3's last night and 5 in their first exhibition. Their system is built for him.

I checked the play-by-play of the candidate JJ game that stands out in memory, the 2005 demolition of Texas in the Meadowlands where he went off for 41 points. (I was at that one. They showed Vince Young, in town for the Heisman ceremony, on the jumbotron, and the pro-Duke crowd started chanting "Reggie Bush, Reggie Bush!" Good times.) But his scoring was pretty evenly spread throughout the game, and no 3.5 minute chunk was close to 15 points.

Ironically I was just checking that box score too! I was gonna look at the NC State game in the ACC tourney where he single-handedly brought us back for the win.

Yes, agreed with this. If they are dragging Khaman out to the perimeter and then driving Kon, it might be a problem. But then again, those might also be the games where Coop swoops in from out of nowhere for 5-6 blocks.

With the UNC squad, they will have Cadeau, RJ, Jackson/Trimble on the perimeter - all quick guards. And regardless of who he starts on, Kon could have any of them on a switch.

A move Jon could make is to put Kon on the slower Cade Tyson at the 4 and bring Cooper up to guard Jackson/Trimble, protecting Kon's defense a bit. There may be a similar move with UK.

The 2003 ACC Championship game against NC State is the one I was thinking of. He scored 30 points and I recall a lot of them coming very quickly in the 2nd half. But I can’t find something to confirm my memory right now.
