MBB: Duke 103, ASU 47 Post Game Thread

We just beat a P4 opponent who is #71 in KenPom by 56 points. Just wow. And it wasn't lucky. That was tough defense and unselfish ball movement. Those two things are repeatable every game.

And I've been waiting to see what we have in Khaman. Today we saw it. He's the real deal. The rebounding and shot blocking/altering are already there. And he only had 1 foul. Seeing how good he is at this level, I think we have a chance to be a dominant team.

Yeah, Khaman, along with Kon and Cooper, look ready to be NCAA stars right now. Tyrese and Caleb are no slouches either. Then look at the bench. You can bring in Maliq, Gillis, Sion and lose nothing on defense. Harris looks really good too. Evans would be one of the best players on many teams and he’s gonna struggle to get minutes. I love this team. We know we will have injuries and our bench looks ready to step up when needed.

The stats are unbelievably spread out.
  • 6 players hit 2 or more threes
  • 7 players grabbed 4 or more boards
  • 6 players got 3 or more assists
And yet, we won this game in the first half on stifling defense. The explosion at the start of the second half was more our team saying, "Just don't. Don't even think about it."

Whoa. We looked incredible.

You're never as good as your last win. (Nor as bad as your last loss.) But what if your last win was incredible?

The ball moved A LOT on offense. Shooting all over the floor and we were seeking it. Defense was smothering and very active. Bodies were flopping around more than we'd like, need to clean that up especially for safety/health.

Flagg was Flagg. He's going to be amazing. He got knocked and sat out most of the 2nd half but we also didn't need him.

Knueppel. I'm happy to be wrong about him. The shooting is real. And he's heady. He will be very good and the fact he looks solid out the gate is going to open up the floor for others. Those others appear to be very good shooters.

Foster and Proctor both looked good and assertive. We don't need them to be superlative but we need them to be consistent. TBD on the latter but on the former they looked good.

Brown gets his hands on so many balls. Deflections and knock aways. Disrupts plays. The fouls were a little problematic but hopefully he can tamp down on those.

Maluach will be a load. He's only going to improve. But he's already just huge and active. I hope fouls don't creep in but fear they will. But Brown kinda derisks some of it.

Gillis. I'm also happy to be right on this one. There's no chance he's not playing a lot. He's the definition of a connector. Right place a lot. Good defense. Good passing. Making smart decisions. Shot looks totally passable for what he will be asked to do.

James had a meh first half. But he came on second half. To spell the guards, he is again more than passable.

Harris gave good minutes. And so did Evans although they looked more like typical freshmen. We will need them if we play this fast.

We played very fast. We ran a lot. We created a lot of speed with our defense. If this is what we're trying to do, we look like an absolute load. ASU couldn't hang with us. Like, at all. At all. And they're obviously no pushover.

Very very impressive team construction, it appears. Extremely excited!

Great win! I really enjoyed that. Our guys can flat out SHOOT! Quite a difference from last year when we had very subpar shooters!!

Cooper is still acclimating to the game. He was not impressive today, but there is lots of time. He needs to shoot 500 FT a day— FT are definitely his Achilles heel. Yeesh.

Tonight, when beating Arizona State (the current 71 on Kenpom, although who knows what that means this early) by about 60 points, when Duke had all five starters off the floor, the five SUBS were…

The ACC defensive player of the year (junior)
The Big Ten sixth man of the year (grad student)
The American Athletic Conference leader in minutes per game (grad student)
The two time NC Mr Basketball/Mcdonalds All American State Champion (freshman)
The Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year and State Champion (freshman)

Four of those players scored a total of 38 points, including shooting 8 of 16 from three.

That’s the *bench.*

As Corey Alexander said, Duke is the most talented team in the country.
