MBB: Duke 103, ASU 47 Post Game Thread

I've been saying I feel the ceiling on this team will depend a lot on just how good Maluach is right now at the college level. That's been the big unknown for me in trying to judge how good this team could be.

Dereck Lively's per40 numbers his freshman season: 10 pts, 10 reb, 5 blocks, 1 steal.

Khaman's per40 tonight: 16 pts, 24 reb, 4 blocks, 2 steals.

Yes, I know. It's just one game. But this isn't a hot night like a shooter might have. These stats are about natural talent and effort. Khaman has both. A lot of guys had great games tonight, but Khaman's stat line is the most exciting thing to me in thinking about how far this team could go.

I need to be careful to manage my expectations based on these two games. We surely can’t win every game by 40+, right?

Cooper is still acclimating to the game. He was not impressive today, but
With respect, that’s what makes him great. Everybody else was killing it. He didn’t need to have a stat stuffing night. He got his, facilitated, and let the rest of his talented teammates bring the team to a win. Frankly, that’s what makes him great, not needing to be the man every night

What I remember about that 1999 team is they always seemed to have their foot on the gas.

Because our guys 6-10 are so good and play so hard, this team could be like that.

No let up on D for 40 minutes and at least three 3-point assassins on the court at all times...

So true. And the way he was celebrating his teammates from the bench, it was obvious he didn't care about a meh stat line.

Good point. His shot just seemed off. (Everyone has off nights though.). I haven’t seen a box score, but I’d bet he was under 50% from the field. And less than 70% from the line. The FTs are the most baffling. A talented kid like that should hit 80% plus.

Exactly. There will be times this year when Duke is NOT up by 50 and they need someone to step up. The magic of Cooper Flagg is he will fill whatever gap needs to be filled at a given time-whether it's with points, assists, blocks, getting loose balls etc. He just has so much influence over so many aspects of the game.

Lots of good observations being made, my fellow DBRers.

The defense was like repeated body blows that wore them out. Their D started to suffer and that’s when we started getting open looks. Maybe that also happened because Kon went on a one man wrecking spree and they got demoralized.

Kaman and Tyrese starting with Caleb, Cooper and Kon. The three transfers all off the bench to play with Flagg and CFos. Harris in before Evans. I really hope we blow a loy of people out so that we keep getting minutes for Harris and Evans because they are good and will be really good.

I can’t wait to see what this team can do against the tough comp in the first month of the season.

As many said, that was fun.

Bobby’s got a man child star in Quaintance. The kid is barely 17, dang!

Dear Cory Alexander,

The regular season hasn't even started and I'm already tired of your incessant babbling and personal stories. Please talk less and focus on the game and the players.

Signed,
A grumpy fan
Agreed. I worship Grant Hill. But I don't know why he was humoring Alexander like that during their conversation - acting like they are good friends and playing along with his moronic shtick. I would think Grant has better taste. Early in the game Alexander was actually pretty good, then it went downhill quickly.

However, I didn't let it ruin an otherwise great game.

Duke 103, Arizona State 47 (recap, box score, highlights, full replay, presser)

A strong defensive first half followed by an offensive explosion in the second half led Duke to a 103-47 victory over Arizona State in the Brotherhood Run, a charity exhibition to benefit Duke Children's Hospital.

Kon Knueppel led all scorers with 19 points while Khaman Maluach reeled in a game-high 12 caroms. Duke had six players finish in double-figures, with Knueppel joined by Caleb Foster (17), Sion James (13), Darren Harris (10), Mason Gillis (10) and Tyrese Proctor (10)...

The Blue Devils amassed 25 assists out of 38 made baskets and committed just seven turnovers. Duke forced the Sun Devils into 18 turnovers, which led to 26 points. The Blue Devils out-scored Arizona State 38-14 in the paint and 17-0 on the fast break. Duke shot 53.5% (38-of-71) from the field on the night, while holding ASU to 28.1% (16-of-57) shooting from the floor.

The Devils Den has locker room interviews with Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, and Tyrese Proctor.

On3's Jamie Shaw kept a live blog of the game and shared some postgame quotes from both head coaches and several Duke players.

But what makes Cooper a great player is what happened on his tomahawk jam. I don't mean the dunk itself, it's that he spent about a half second celebrating, then immediately sprinted the entire length of the floor to create defensive havoc. We were leading by at least 20 at the time in an exhibition game that means nothing to the standings, but he was busting his butt to help his team do the dirty work, even though he had just had a spectacular moment. Cooper is quite the impressive role model.

Glad to see some forum topics are already in midseason form! :)

I mean, it doesn't seem like a stretch that Grant might now be humoring Corey - they could quite easily be actually good friends.

I'm sure I'll become exhausted by Alexander's incessant self-congratulatory yammering, but if we keep rocking teams by 50-60 points we could have Gilbert Gottfried (RIP) and Rob Schnieder (not RIP yet) call our games. I'll turn down the volume and enjoy the challenge of trying to keep up with the electric pace of our team.

This team is really strong. Smothered ASU defensively and rebounded extremely well. Once we started hitting our 3s in the 2nd half it felt like there should have been a mercy rule. 1st half we had several open looks at 3 but could not hit the broad side of a barn. Didn't matter because of our defense.

Khaman being out on the floor changes everything. His length is just unreal - and ASU was not a tiny team. Cooper is as good as advertised. Kon is the epitome of next play. Maliq was running a defensive clinic. Our transfers are grown men. No single player was ball dominant. Great ball movement. Offense dynamic, attacking the inside effectively which opened up the outside. Teammates seem to get along great. Hustling, bodies hitting the floor for balls, not giving up on plays or rebounds. This team is going to be a load.

Only down note is that stands were not even close to full upstairs. It was kind of bizarre to see that at Cameron and a shame considering that the proceeds went to charity. I suppose this is because tix were sold outside season package. They could have done a better job of getting word out that there were lots of seats available. Otherwise great event for a great cause.
