MBB: Duke 103, ASU 47 Post Game Thread

Phredd, I'll give you 10-1 odds no one other than Kon scores 15 points in 3:31 this season. I think folks are underestimating how highly unusual that is.

It requires the team to play really fast and for one player to make a lot of 3s on consecutive possessions. This is JJ Redick territory, but I would bet he never scored 15 in 3:31 at Duke.

It also requires your opponent to cooperate a bit and take quick shots on their end...
The question that come to mind is what odds would you give that Kon will accomplish it during the actual season?

Whether he accomplishes it during the regular season is, IMO, immaterial. What matters to me is the fact that Kon has demonstrated, in a contest against a power conference opponent, his capacity to score an entire game's worth of points in a span of time less than the interval between media timeouts. As a result, Duke's opponents will need to respect his potential and prepare to defend him more closely than they might otherwise have anticipated, which means that his teammates will likely be afforded that much more space in which to take shots and make plays. The threat alone is enough to force a defensive adjustment that should benefit Duke.

Stray, I was not meaning to downplay how well Kon is playing. More wondering whether SkyBrickey had thoughts on the odds that Kin repeats the feat in season: a feat which may never have been done by any other Duke player in season. And the fact, he did it during the preseason may lower the odds Kon does it again as he received more defensive attention per your post.

I think it's highly, highly unlikely he will do it again during the regular season. I don't think anyone has shown that JDub or JJ or anyone has ever done it in a Duke uniform.

If a bookey were setting the odds, they might set it at 50-1 or something? My 10-1 odds were just trying to pocket some easy pies... 🤓

The 2003 ACC Championship game against NC State is the one I was thinking of. He scored 30 points and I recall a lot of them coming very quickly in the 2nd half. But I can’t find something to confirm my memory right now.
Yeah, I was using the Archives from GoDuke but it didn’t have links for the details

Understood. I didn't mean to sound critical. I'm just wary, based on past experience, of the tendency among fans to develop unrealistic expectations of young players based on an exceptional early performance. None of us wants the player to feel undue pressure or to be concerned that fans might be disappointed if he can't replicate that kind of shotmaking and equal that level of scoring proficiency in the future. My point is simply that doing it once was enough to create the desired effect, regardless of whether he actually can do it again.

Someone should make a sign.

Kon 3:31
On the back: Can’t touch this

Not sure if that’s Old or New Testament.

Humor aside, I’m with stray, let these kids do their thing.

Yes, if it was an official game then maybe we could get the Duke sports office looking at whether any Duke player has ever scored 15 points in 3:30 before.

But the juice is not worth the squeeze for an exhibition game.
Jay Williams scores on a 3 with 14:31 left against UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen.

He scores his 15th straight point with 11:05 left on two free throws from an Earl Watson foul.

And there it is! 15 points in 3:26. Thanks for doing the research. I like comparing K2 to our NPOY. Hopefully he's got some more tricks in the bag for the regular season.
