Jared McCain to the NBA Draft

Absolute correct call for him, however much I would have loved to see him stay. Great player and great attitude

Duke has a lot of guys come in that have a reputation as a deadeye shooter, but few live up to the expectations (imo). McCain is definitely one of those few

Dang!

Not unexpected, but a blow to the solar plexus anyway.

I hope he becomes the next Devin Booker.

Man, he was awful fun to watch play. I wish him the best in the league, but I'm certainly going to miss his joy on the court playing a game which obviously brings *him* so much joy.

Really loved this kid. Special and rare type with such great character. He’s going to be great in the NBA.

Will certainly miss his shooting and tenacity. He had really great hands and a knack for steals.

Congrats to Jared

Funny, but I remember reading the views of some experts last spring who thought that McCain might be in that sweet spot for a college team, where he would be a very good college player but stay in school for three or four years before being able to go to the NBA. Funny how things work.

Best of luck to him. I think he'll have a long NBA career.

Good luck to Jared. Really enjoyed seeing him play. I do have concerns for him at the NBA level. He does not have ideal size for an NBA 2. Booker is 6'-6". Ultimately, it's the right call due to the draft class this year vs next year, but I believe Jared will need to develop PG skills to remain in the league.

I remember those views too, but obviously Jared exceeded all expectations. This is the type of decision that hurts less because Jared earned this. He was, at best, a fringe first-round pick entering the year, and now is looking at potentially being in the lottery. When that happens, you have to take advantage.

I think Jared is going to be someone we all remember very fondly because of how great a representative he was for Duke. I imagine he's going to be a similarly great representative (and cheerleader!) for The Brotherhood for years to come in the NBA.

Thanks for all the blood, sweat, and tears you put into the program Jared. Go be great in The League.

This is how it is supposed to go. Duke sells itself as a path to the NBA. McCain played his way safely into the 1st round. Meanwhile, Proctor didn't and he's returning to continue to develop and get another shot at that 1st round guarantee. I loved McCain's attitude on and off the court and his work ethic. He completely took over games. That first half against FSU and what he and Proctor did to JMU were among the highlights of the season for me. McCain improved considerably throughout the season. I think his success is going to be a positive sign for Coach Scheyer as he's talking to recruits in the future. Now I hope McCain lands in a great spot where he can continue to develop and grow. The kid is a dream chaser and I have no doubt he will get everything he wants in life.

Here's a direct link to Jared's announcement video on his Twitter: https://x.com/J_mccain_24/status/1778799916808110352

Next time anyone around here gets anxious about Jon's potential as a coach, I hope the turn back to this video. Jared McCain clearly loves Jon Scheyer, and credits him tremendously with getting him to where he is today. Recruits are going to get that message.

Also love how he emphasized how close the group of freshmen were this year. Even with Jared leaving, that gives me more hope that the now trio of Stewart, Foster, and Power can be a core of this team next year and (perhaps) further.

Are kids still able to test the waters and return if they do not hear positive feedback from the NBA? I remember that used to be the case but I haven't paid much attention to it lately

Thanks for the season you gave us Jared. Now go prove some doubters wrong and show them how good you are.

GoJared and GoDuke!

He's definitely towards the top of the list of favorite one and dones.

Hard-working: Reportedly, our long-time strength coach said he's the hardest worker he's had in the last 20 years.
Smart: The way he could rebound for his size and athleticism and anticipate passes for steals showed the he is an extremely smart player.
Joyous: There aren't many players who seem to enjoy the game as much as McCain, and he was so much fun to watch.
Clutch: He played the best of anyone on the team overall in the 2 games against uncheat and in the tournament.
Unselfish: He had star talent but was more than willing to do the little things and seemed to blend well with everyone.
Mature: I think a lot of players are physically ready for the NBA but would be happier, and perhaps more successful in the long-run, if they gave themselves more time to mature in college first. McCain, though, seems ready to be an adult.

I am disappointed that I will miss watching him at Duke next year, but when someone with his size/athleticism is projected as high as he is in the draft, I fully understand the choice.

No surprise at all. It is the right call for this outstanding young man after the season he had.

Thank you, Jared. Best of luck as you enter the NBA draft!!!
