GMan Overcomes Alcoholism

Oh, man. I wish him the strength he needs to stay sober. Now I know why ACCN didn’t pick him up.
I hope that his grandchild is the rock that makes it happen. So much to look forward to and enjoy. TAKE CARE Big Mike.

Easiest way to not get hooked on something is to never try it in the first place. I am 65 and have never tried a cigarette, drugs of any kind, or any drink containing alcohol.

I am happy that he has fought back.

Good for you, that is very smart. Some of those substances have given me pleasure at times, but overall it’s been more pain than pleasure.

I hope Mike continues to be able to stay off the booze.

my first thought. saying one "overcomes" alcoholism downplays the strength it takes to stay on the wagon...for the rest of your life.
You are certainly correct. It's a lifelong battle - he did say he had been sober for four years. which is wonderful.

Really rooting for him. He was such an excellent player and is a wonderful announcer.

I gave up drinking alcohol two years ago, not because I had a problem, but because I reviewed the science and concluded that drinking has some pretty bad health effects, including damaging one's sleep. It took a few months, but at some point I lost interest in drinking. No regrets.

I am similar. I was always the lightweight of my friends - never really drank much but I would usually nurse a drink or two in social situations. About five years ago my liver numbers spiked for some reason and the doctors said to stop drinking. Which wasn't hard as I barely drank to begin with, but I did it. It turned out to be a false alarm but after not drinking for a while, I had a drink once or twice and felt miserable (not hangover miserable - just miserable) and like you it impacted my sleep (which is already challenged due to severe sleep apnea) so I have stopped. I am occasionally tempted to have something (just got home from Mexican and the margaritas looked great) but I have decided not to.

It sometimes makes others feel really uncomfortable when I mention this. I do not judge at all - I am fully supportive of those who drink responsibly and no one has to stop drinking because I'm not drinking. It is kind of weird that me not drinking is almost a buzz kill for others.

Back to the point, I wish GMan the best - I have always been a fan, both of him as a player and announcer.

It’s great to hear from you and others on cutting out drinking. It’s something I’ve been working on and it’s nice to hear voices of others who have cut it out and don’t much miss it.

If I recall, G-Man used to be a bartender at a pizza place on Hillsborough during the off-season. Probably not a good side-job.
Glad he is recovering.

I’m sure Duke in the late ‘70s was the launching ground for many alcoholics. The drinking culture was very strong.
Yep, I can attest to this. I was never a super heavy drinker, but there was a LOT of drinking at Duke in those days. The legal drinking age in NC had been lowered to 18, so almost all Duke students could legally buy alcohol or drink off campus. And there was still a strong Greek culture on campus, with a heavy emphasis on partying and booze. I don't remember widespread drug usage (well, other than FUBAR - people used to say you could get high just walking down the hallways of FUBAR) but maybe I was not attuned to that culture at Duke. Hell, they sold beer in the cafeteria and there was a bar on campus - The Hideaway, underneath Page Auditorium. I did know a few students who literally drank themselves right out of Duke.

Yes, it is hard to fathom today, but we could go to the CI for Friday happy hour and get unlimited pitchers of beer and king crab using our dining hall points.

Ah, those WERE the good, ole days! Although I remember buckets of shrimp to go with the pitchers of beer. Until someone (i.e., The Chronicle) wrote a story about it and "Uncle Terry" took the punchbowl away from the students.
