FB: Duke 27, #22 SMU 28 (OT)

There was a reason Nichols smartly picked up the ball on the fumble and tried to get it in for a score rather than just falling on it. Unfortunately, the offense and special teams didn't help the cause....

If Pelino had a 90% chance of making that kick, then he would've had a better chance of making a PAT in OT. I know that wouldn't have won us the game but let's be real: we had maybe a 40% chance of winning on a 2-pt conversion.
Yes, and I was looking forward to a 2nd OT...sigh.

We would have had the ball first in the 2nd OT and only two point conversions then. Having the ball first puts you at a disadvantage. Manny must have not liked how things were shaping up there and wanted to end it. The odds probably don't make the decision totally clear one way or the other.

I don't think it's necessarily just because of the missed FGs from Pelino, but that probably was at least one factor. Just going by odds, a 30 yarder from the middle of the field is a 90%+ Duke proposition. Unfortunately, the line tried to block too low and just let the smu guy leap over.... ugh.

But, I don't think it was a crazy call..it was a gutsy call though and unfortunately didn't work out even though it was a PI. We'd converted a 2-point conversion earlier....

I have no problem with the call to go for 2.

Tough loss, good fight.

Damn.

Next play.
Agreed, Pelino was going to miss the kick anyway. I was as sure he would miss both of those attempts as I was Reddick would hit his FTs. Called my family over both times to watch our kicker blow the lead and lose the game. No joke. He’s more like a 20% kicker in high pressure situations.

Or lose the lead and blow the game. Whichever.

And on the fumbled TD, yes, it did seem his first possession after recovery was with the ball behind the line, and obviously down… but, even though I’ve almost never seen it called, isn’t there a rule about kicking a fumbled ball forward? You gotta be really critical of that when a score is on the line. I’d need replay to see if he’s definitely the one that kicked it but he knew the ball was down there

Frustrating loss. We let that game slip through our fingers.

From the stands it appeared Murphy could have run for the 2 PT conversion. I have not seen a replay yet.
We were right in front of that play. The linebacker was definitely going to tackle him before the end zone. Murphy was too slow to outrun him. He had to throw.
It was blatant defensive pass interference though. Mad that the refs swallowed their whistles there.

I would have kicked the PA to tie it and trust our defense to stop them one more time.

I don't know that I've ever seen a defender leap a lineman off two feet and then leap again to block a kick like that. It was a ridiculously athletic play. I'm guessing they scouted our linemen and knew that our right guard liked to dive low for the block.

I’ve been a Duke football fan since 1984 when I was a freshman. This loss will haunt me for a long time,
I’ve “liked” opposing opinions about the decision to go for two, because neither is wrong. It was a gutsy move and understandable that Manny seized the opportunity to end the game one way or another. It would have also been my choice to kick the PAT given the overwhelming probability of converting PATs. This loss released a demon spirit that will haunt me as well but To said spirit I say “grab a number and get in line.” It’s going to be a long wait. I still haven’t fully processed the “lateral” game, then there’s the “jump pass” game, the 4th and 16 game…Duke football provides a steady stream of haunting nightmares. Hell it took me almost 30 years to get over the recurring nightmares induced by The Boston Symphony’s performance of Prokofiev’s Peter and The Wolf”. Damn Ruskies.

Diaz needs to address Red Zone offense. It is just underachieving. Or make sure the defense scores on every turnover. At least the Dodgers won. Miami next and they have the best offense in the ACC.
Our offense line is good ,it is the play calling that is dreadful
